I enjoyed the positive nature of this book, and it was nice to learn more about the practices of a company to which I've devoted a large portion of my coffee patronage. But after awhile, it started to read more like a long promotional pamphlet touting Starbucks' excellence.Since I'm thinking about starting my own business, this book was helpful to me because it identified some important ideals to strive for. It made me think about my message, how I want to brand myself, and what inconsistencies I need to solve.On page 58, the author writes, "Great leaders look for ways to maximize the felt sense that their business generates." This made me think about the feelings I want to inspire in people when they meet me and when I have the opportunity to serve them.I stopped to reflect on my business goals and intended practices pretty often while reading this book. It devotes a chapter to each of Starbucks' five principles with thinking points at the end of each chapter that anyone can apply to their own business. I also liked the call-out boxes that help readers relate Starbucks' practices to their own situations.Starbucks has indeed made a commitment to providing for its employees, the community, and the environment. If more businesses (large and small) operated with the integrity described in this book, the world would be a much better place.The author appeared semi-unbiased when he talked of Starbucks' success stories, and he did not hesitate to address some of the bad press the company has received over the years. He discussed China's resistance to the opening of Starbucks stores in their country, saying the overall first impression was a prime example of "US imperialism" (pages 121-123). Then he goes on to discuss how Starbucks solved the bad image by getting involved in the communities they served and tailoring the Starbucks experience to the Chinese culture.At times, however, it goes to far with its "Starbucks saved the day!" anecdotes. It is a testament to how much effort the company puts into employee training though. I don't think I've ever had a rude barista at Starbucks. Actually, I haven't had any problems with baristas in the other coffeeshops I visit either.The book talks about how Starbucks raises the bar for the other businesses in the area when it sets up shop in a new place. I am sure there are examples to the contrary, but I have to take the book's word on it since I haven't been anywhere that Starbucks is considered "new" in a really long time!I think this book has some value for people going into business for themselves or those at the management level at a company where they have some decision-making power. Otherwise, it's just a feel-good read about people making positive changes in the world.I hope my review has been helpful to you. It encourages me to continue writing and updating my reviews. As a small business owner, I've often looked up to Starbucks as a shining example of what can be achieved in the hospitality and retail business. So I picked up this book to hopefully learn about how Starbucks conducts business, so that I can use those lessons in my own business. However, I didn't find this book to be much help at all. The lessons are far too abstract to have meaning in the day to day operation and planning of a business. Principles like "Make your Mark" and "Surprise and Delight" are great general principles to aspire to, but they are presented in a format that reads like a Starbucks training manual. The book is at its best when its provides specifics, like when it states that Starbucks has a program that pays non-profits $10 an hour for every hour a partner volunteers there. But many of the examples are almost comical in the way its paints Starbucks as a saintly company. Nice to know that a partner who won the lottery shared it with her co-workers, but what does that tell me about HOW Starbucks created a culture of sharing; could this partner just be a really good person, while another partner might have kept the whole jackpot to himself.

This book is a MUST read for baristas and other Starbucks employees as it reaffirms WHY Starbucks is the number one coffee shop in the world. The employees meet expectations of their customers as the third place and it goes beyond getting a hot cup of coffee or icy frappuccino. It means making contact with the customer by smiling and asking about their day and the ritual of writing their name on their cup and remembering their order if they are a regular. It means surprising them by connecting with them on a deeper level with humor and compassion whenever possible. It means offering a fair trade product and be involved in the community that Starbucks thrives in and making it a better place for those businesses around them. It means offering health insurance to part time employees and understanding the Starbucks experience means extraordinary commitment to excellence above and beyond their product.

Although I won't be owning a business anytime soon, this books gives solid insight into the many principles that make Starbucks so successful. Meanwhile, I've found that I could use the principles in this book for my everyday life.- As the president of a student organization, I've found that principles like "be your own" very helpful. I want to make the experience in my club to be a pleasant one, and Starbucks has mastered that. There's no reason to copy another organization completely. It's important to create your own unique environment.- Structure of the book is organized very well. A little introduction and explanation, some examples and stories, and then a final checklist of things to remember. Thoughtful, brief, and understandable. The checklist is worth of making a copy to post on your desk.Whether you're a business CEO, leader, student, or just a regular employee, this book will help you realize that you can make a difference sooner rather than later.

The short version of my review is that Games of Empire is a great analysis of the material conditions that make up the system that enables us to play video games. The authors' deployment of Hardt and Negri as their cornerstone theorist creates a grand unifying theory of social/technological relationships that surround video games, which is useful to think through. However, if you are already familiar with their work, be prepared for long sections where they quote the basics at you. That isn't a bad thing, mind you, just something that anyone who plans on reading the book should be aware of.That said, if you are interested in Hardt and Negri and the way they can be applied to video games, this is SUPER the book for you.

"Games of Empire" by Nick Dyer-Witheford and Greig de Peuter offers an uniquely incisive analysis of video game industry and culture. Mr. Dyer-Witheford and Mr. de Peuter's fascinating post-Marxist discussion is informed by Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt's influential book Empire, where videogaming is seen both as a paradigmatic expression of the corporate desire to control machines, immaterial labor and subjectivities; and as a possible pathway of resistance and liberation for the multitude.The book is divided into three parts. 'Game Engine: Labor, Capital and Machine' shows how videogaming provides a persuasive training tool that subtly prepares a new generation of laborers for post-industrial production; how some workers at a major video game manufacturer have pushed back against severe exploitation by their corporate bosses; and how game consoles have become sites of contestation over the control of content and game play.The second section, 'Gameplay: Virtual/Actual' deconstructs three massively popular games to explore themes about war, biopower, and neoliberalism. 'Full Spectrum Warrior' presents the banality of the U.S. military's interminable war to secure empire against the threat of theocracy; 'World of Warcraft' highlights struggles between workers in the developed and developing economies over commerce; and 'Grand Theft Auto' cynically renders a world where there are no alternatives to bare-knuckled capitalism.The third section, 'New Game?' demonstrates how the means of production can be coopted by the multitude in acts of defiance, suggesting the possibility of freedom. I loved this book - I've been following @pinlord on instagram for a while now, and used the guides on his blog to create and sell my own pins.I found his content so useful that I wanted to support him when he released something that I could purchase, so really I only bought this product to give back to a person who's resources were so useful to me, but I ended up absolutely loving the book!With interesting information about different types and styles of pins, along with so many beautifully presented photos, it was great fun to read, and also try and spot some of the pins that I myself had managed to collect!It gets 5 stars from me, thanks for creating this wonderful book!

Not much substance, but tons of photos. Just sort of a book to leave on your coffee-table and slip through. Lots of the photos are of pins you can find on Etsy and other online stores.

My boyfriend who collects pins and makes them as well loved his Christmas gift, the book itself is awesome with a lot of information (and inspiration) in every page.
