It saddens me to give one of Julie Lessman's books less than 5 stars, but in all honesty, 3's the best I can do for this one. I've loved all her other books, but I found Liberty extremely selfish and obnoxious. I understand her passion for justice, and the need for it in that time period, but she was just too arrogant about it. Also, the constant use of contrived western slang, as noted by another reviewer, got really old really fast. A little of that could go a long way. The most troubling was the ending, which to my mind was bizarre and completely unbelievable. Without being a spoiler, I won't go into details, beyond: too much poppy seed cake and poppy seed tea?? Please. All that said, I do like how Ms. Lessman brings in the hero's faith, how he has been mentored by the local pastor, and through his faith overcome a very difficult situation. I like her writing generally, I just wish Liberty had been more likeable. I will get the next book in the series, in hopes that it will be more like the authors previous writings.

I usually enjoy Julie's stories, but this one had one silly alliterative exclamation after another. The worse part was the first half of the book seemed to mention the heroine' s irresistible "luscious full lips" at least once a page. It got difficult to read because of this, but then the constant fighting between the two main characters who then turned to kissing & immediately back to fighting wore on me. Not my kind of enjoyable reading.

For Love of Liberty could have been a very good story. Unfortunately, the characters spend much of their time bickering. Tried to like Libby and Finn, but they were impossible to connect with.

Liberty O'Shea and Griffin McShane go together like chocolate and mustard. They've been rivals since both competed for the honor of Scholar of the Year back in grammar school. He believes she's a spoiled little rich girl; to her, he's a mule-headed bully with no sophistication. But as God and the town would have it, Liberty and Finn get thrown together to chair the first annual Fourth of July festival, providing the backdrop for a sizzling summer romance in the middle of November. Whew, is it hot in here, or is it just me?As always, Julie Lessman pens an enjoyable faith-based romance without sacrificing the banter and steam we women love to read about between our hero and heroine. Liberty and Finn win the honor of the most volatile and interesting Lessman couple I've met since Katie O'Connor and Cluny McGee. Every interaction pulses and pops with witty banter and unexpected comebacks - some laughably so, like the time Finn literally carries Liberty into the newspaper office and plops her on the editor's desk. I haven't seen anything that unique since Allison McClare threatened Nick Barone with her pointer. However, what I like even better than the banter and attraction between these two is how they help each other mature. Both halves of our couple realize they possess hot tempers and loads of stubborness which, unchecked, could lead to a harmful or even abusive relationship. Admitting that is difficult, but it's heartwarming. As Finn and Liberty face those shortcomings, you get to see them grow romantically and as individuals, until you're absolutely sure they're perfect for each other. The Virginia City, NV setting is off Julie's beaten path for sure. I miss her old Boston and San Francisco stomping grounds, but Julie clearly did her research into the historical West, and Virginia City shines with its own charm. I especially enjoyed the Fourth of July festival scenes, as they lent a small town air to the urban Western story.I definitely wanted to see more of Finn and Liberty's relationships with God and spiritual growth. Finn mentions the Poppys have been his mentors for years, and we see that in his interactions with them. There's a passing nod that Liberty is Irish Catholic, and that her dad has issues with Protestant countrymen. Other than that, there's a lot less spirituality than I've come to expect from Julie. I didn't need it to be in my face, but I did miss seeing the characters interact with and learn from God while learning from each other. Additionally, some little things got on my nerves, like the constant Western "cursing" (horse apples, frog spit, prairie poop). Yeah, it was funny the first couple times, but... And how many times was Finn going to have to explain he was *not* interested in marrying Jo Beth? Perhaps if that conflict had gotten more development, Liberty's persistent pushing away would've made more sense.Basically, I just wanted more flesh on this story, but it was a novella, and only an intro. I'll tell you this: it made me thirst to read the rest of Blaze and Maggie's story this summer. Julie definitely has the beginnings of a great new series on her hands, and I can't wait.

packed into a short, romantic romp. “For Love of Liberty” features 2 headstrong lead characters that have known each other since grade school. He’s from the wrong side of the tracks and she’s a high ‘n mighty rich girl who just graduated from an Ivy League college - cue fireworks 💥This historical novella gives brief nods to silver mining, railroads and women suffrage but only in a cursory manner due to the shorter form. The characters and town are well drawn and fit the late 19th century well. Julie Lessman has written this book to be the introduction to a new series and it is a complete story unto itself. The dialogue is wonderful even if it’s full of old sayings my grandmother bandied about. There’s no foul language, sexual content or violence. The ending is a bit strange, no, it’s very strange. Has me wondering what experience the author drew from. That aside, “For Love of Liberty” is a delightful start to what promises to be an entertaining new series.

For the Love of Liberty is a wonderful book. The plot moves fast and the romance sizzles on the page between Finn and Liberty. The one thing that sets Lessman apart from every other romance writer in my humble opinion is her ability to jump into the male's perspective too. And it reads correctly too. Male are visual with their emotions. Sometimes romance writers get that wrong and it bothers me, but not Lessman. She really brings the male side to life too. I enjoy how the setting, even being in the West, which I normally don't read, didn't bother me. I could see the Virginia City as it blossomed into something better. I enjoyed the fighting back and forth between Finn and Lizz. A couple of moments had me gasping in laughter. The plot was cute, and I really can't wait until she finishes the rest of the books in this series. If you are a fan of Lessman's other books or a hot romance, than this is the book for you. I can't recommend Lessman enough. I have loved everything she has written.

We had one of those "baby's first year" books, but when the baby in question turned 1, it was time for a sequel. I chose this one based on reviews that it was kind of dry and objective, which is what I wanted. There are plenty of options for books of cute anecdotes - I just wanted to generally know what our little guy might be developmentally ready for in the next few years. This one fits the bill, more or less. It's just over 200 pages covering 10 years, so not a ton of detail. It's super easy to read and kind of has a "For Dummies" look and layout. That's all ok.What bugged me is that in the first section (0-18 months) there are already some contradictions.Page 9: "Consistently and immediately respond to your baby's cries of distress."Page 43: "Responsible adults take care of an infant's need for food, affection, and physical comfort as soon as possible. They don't let babies scream themselves into a fit to teach them who's in charge."... except if the distress is regarding bedtime, apparently:Page 41: "let your baby cry for about 10 minutes to lull himself to sleep. The crying won't hurt him, and the experience will nurture his sense of autonomy."Regardless of which side of the CIO debate you're on, I'd like to see consistency within the same book. Some of the advice also goes against things I've read in other places. It recommends talking about yourself in the 3rd person "Mommy's going to give Katie a bath!" (p29), whereas other research supports using natural language with kids ("I'm going to give you a bath!").It also promotes "self-soothing", which other sources claim is a biological impossibility until the part of the brain responsible for emotional regulation matures, which doesn't happen until school age (and possibly beyond). That said, plenty of the infant section did agree with things I'd already learned. So, like any book/blog/article, take it with a shaker of salt. I got a general idea of what toddlers and pre-schoolers are like, which is what I was looking for.

I do agree with previous posters that there are some shocking things in terms of the scientific, non-sentimental way the author states what babies know & understand at certain stages. Eg Newborn/infant doesn't know the value of a personal touch just needs primal needs to be met (fed, dry, warm, etc) - this isn't the exact wording but the gist is there. It sounds harsh but its kind of true when you think of it in terms of you can hug & kiss a crying baby all you want, but if s/he has a dirty diaper or is hungry, tired, gassy or constipated, s/he is not going to feel better or stop crying just because you hold/kiss/cuddle them.So much of what we've experienced with our daughter now at 15 months is SPOT ON either in terms of the things she's done at various ages and stages or ways we can best help her learn, adjust and function in this world by understanding her point of view. As someone who is a scientist but also has experience with kids, I've learned a good deal from this book and have found it helpful in communicating with my daughter, help to ease her frustration in learning/communicating (by understanding her perspective & wants) and have more enjoyment & productivity (both parent & toddler) in our day to day life.

Bought this and overnight shipped as a gift for my son and wife. I tell them a few things they might want to know to help them as first time parents raising a baby, but they do not believe until they read it in the book. Then they say Mom did you know... The book has backed me up and they love it. Discovering things for yourself is better than being told.

I have a 10 year old and a 1 year old - due to their age gap it's hard to find a single book with information on both of their ages. The book was well written but I didn't feel that the younger stages information was any different than what you'd read in the 'what to expect' books. Although there is duplicate information, there is still a lot of additional information I have not read in other books.Overall it was an easy to read book with a nice layout.

Really like this book! Gives good basics of development at each stage. I was looking for something a little more detailed, like interest in body parts and how to appropriately handle, psychology when being disciplined and some other specifics. But, overall this really helped me to identify some key things happening and how to respond. Love the science/research pieces.

Good info just an old book.. probably new research out.

This book has a nice voice, but it is for people who have absolutely no idea how to parent. Most of the material is so obvious that it scares me to think someone would not know it. Honestly, I think it may also be written by people who have not parented for a very long time. It sounds kind of old-fashioned relative to what are considered best practices today. There are some occasional helpful items here, but mostly it's stuff that is entirely common sense.

The birth to age nine child's parent will do well to use this guide of figureing things out. It is isn't one of those when this happens do that books but a style of positive parenting and realizing that the problem isn't in the child but how can you change the environment for the existing problem

Stacy Holmes strong voice comes through loud and clear as he takes us on an unsentimental, intense journey through his personal recovery process from spinal cord surgery injury. Useful to anyone faced with a similar physical and emotional challenge, his book is packed with valuable advice and resources. It's main appeal for many will also be the surprising reminder that we are the architects of our own lives, and not passive receivers. Living fully is a joy we can all experience if we are willing to do the work, which starts with just opening our eyes.

Having a far different challenge (COPD), I was fearful that this book would only make me feel bad about what I cannot do. Instead, I found many details surprisingly useful and affirming.

I just finished Stacy's book. I think it will be of great help to those looking for specific actions they can take to restore not just their body, but also their mind and spirit.I particularly liked the inclusion of all of the references at the back of each chapter with the reminder that it was all available on his websiteAll in all, a great resource I'm happy to recommend.

Really enjoyed it! Stacy is an amazing person and an amazing author. Part memoir, part managerial how-to handbook, this is a great book for people with or without disabilities including those currenly doing rehabilitation, but also those helping a loved one facing any kind of disability or long term therapy. Very well written and to the point, there is a lot of great information packed into its brief 123 pages!

My hero has written a book. Stacy Holmes' remarkable recovery from spinal cord injury is a story of pure guts and determination. I had the chance to see early drafts of this book and can recommend it without reservation. It's honest, inspiring, practical and funny, with insights useful for almost anyone facing a serious challenge or just plain life. Congratulations, Stacy.
