This book is phenomenal. If you are so much as considering going into law school, I highly recommend this book. It outlines the theory of law education, how to do well on the LSATs, how to apply to law schools, how to pick one, how to finance one etc - all helpful if you are just starting your journey into applying. The book then goes into the hornbooks needed to get the most out of your 1L courses, if gives descriptions of the required 1L courses, and how best to study for them. It gives tips for finding housing, getting supplies, studying, all the little things that make a huge difference when you have no time to think about them once the school year has begun.This is a comprehensive, all-inclusive 1L experience book - and an entertaining, and highly informative read.

I cannot think of a graduate school experience that is more mythologized than the first year of law school (in the worst possible way), and as an incoming 1L, I sought to familiarize myself with what to expect as best as I could. Mr. Miller's book not only provides an extremely thorough rendering of what happens at every step of the law school experience, but he imbues his writing with a candor and perspective that was extremely refreshing to read. He was neither hyperbolic nor dismissive about the trials and tribulations of law school, and it is important for incoming students to see this sort of balance reflected in discussions of what law school will be like (since most of my peers tend to swing towards either end of the spectrum).I plan to give a copy of this book to all of the future 1Ls in my life, and even though I am only a week into my first year, I know I am much better off having read this book from cover to cover.

As a 0L (soon to be 1L), this book seems to have a lot of valuable information to prepare before and during law school. It is a pretty comprehensive book which is divided in several parts (applying/preparing as a 0L/your first year/second year/third year). The book talks about how to make the most of your learning experience and give tips regarding exam taking, preparing for interviews, getting into law review and/or getting internships/externships/clerkships. It also covers how to choose the best school for you, financial aid, and many other aspects of the law school experience. I have gone through the whole book once, and I plan to review each specific part (for example, this summer I will re-read the 0L part of the book) and in August I will revisit the 1L portion. The author gives a lot of advice regarding preparation, and although it is a lot of information, I am pretty sure that it will prove useful soon. I recommend the book as it provides condensed insight on many aspects of the legal education.

This book is very honest. It is thorough and complete and it really helped me decide NOT to go back to Law School. I appreciated the raw honesty of the authors and found the book incredibly helpful. I'm glad I was able to read this BEFORE I spent a fortune in time and money on Law School. [Not to say that Law School isn't a good fit for someone else - this book will definitely help you determine if it is a good fit for you!].

If you are considering law school, or are already here, this book will tell you what to expect and short cuts to make your time more efficient. It also asks the tough questions that you want to avoid but are better off answering early and going to school knowing what you want.

It is indeed useful, particularly if this is your first book on law school and you are interested in a very general overview.PERSONAL SUGGESTION (*warining* personal opinion)My strongest suggestion for those interested in law school is this: take one or two years off prior to entering law school to 1) adequately prepare and 2) make a determination whether or not you *really* want to do it. Whether you enroll into a graduate program, work, relax, explore, or engage in charitable activities - give yourself some time to pursue your varied interests. If you ever wanted to start a company, see a particular part of the world, or just take some time to think .. I highly suggest you do that prior to entering law school. If you just completed or are about to complete an undergraduate or graduate program, you might not have this opportunity again. Purge those urges and pursue those interests now while you have a chance.HIGHLIGHTSThe book provides useful information regarding law school from financing your education to law school etiquette (share your class notes; do not boast about anything; avoid gossip; and never discuss grades). Furthermore, the author provides useful insights on applying for jobs to obtaining internships. Many topics are addressed in the book, and I appreciated the perspectives of former law students to hiring partners at variously sized firms. I do not necessarily agree with the author's suggestion on case briefing, however. I think it would be tedious and time-consuming to read cases using variously colored highlighters. It is better to use simply a pen and underline relevant material.SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONThe information in the book lacks depth but makes up for it for its vast breadth concerning prior to law school, while in law school (year 1, 2, and 3) and after law school. I am confident that most people who have an interest in possibly attending law school will find the book useful.

I've purchased several "In a Nutshell" books before, but this is the first that I wouldn't rank 5-stars. Usually, these books are well-organized (they are meant to be a QUICK reference, after all), but SQL in a Nutshell fails at this.The book is almost 600 pages long, but it's only 4 chapters. Chapter 3, which covers statement commands, has no subsections and nothing is listed in the table of contents. You have to thumb through over 400 pages to find the statement you're looking for.If they would add subsections, and a table of contents, this book would be a lot, lot better. The information is clear and concise (what is expected from the "In a Nutshell" series), and covers the differences in statements between different SQL versions, it's just very, very poorly organized.

I'm studying SQL intensively for work and needed an up-to-date reference, so bought this book, relying on the O'Reilly reputation for good books.As soon as I got it I looked up something I had just used at work for the first time: The WITH clause. (Or statement, I don't know.)It wasn't in the alphabetical list of "commands", and didn't show up in the index. The word "WITH" does show up in the lists of reserved words in the Appendix.Is it just my bad luck that the very first thing I looked up - no kidding! the first thing! - was missing from this book? This book is large enough to be encyclopedic, and is organized like an encyclopedia, yet - if this thing that I know about is missing, what is missing that I don't know about but would have wanted to learn from this book?

I'm not a DBA, and I don't pretend to be one. I'm a C++ programmer and the only time I care about SQL is when I'm trying to coerce some database to give up the information I need. As I don't develop on an internet connected machine, I'm constantly running to the Google Gods to answer my SQL questions. But no more! This book keeps me in front of my dev machine where I belong. It has just the right level of detail. I find it very akin to a man page level of detail, which is perfect for my needs. It also presents SQL statements for various implementations; the MySQL and Postgres inclusion is key! Overall, it makes an excellent reference. I don't think you'd be able to learn the language or discover advanced techniques from it though.

O'Rielly books are always great. This one is no exception. Getting started in SQL and this is proving to be a nice reference book. Very handy with how different variations on SQL have slightly different syntaxes. This lays them out clearly making my life easier. This plus google equals projects done!

I like using this as a desk reference. Although I do have to agree with a previous reviewer who mentioned the examples are a little light. It is 3x the size of my 1st edition and I'm still pleased that I upgraded, but it is somewhat frustrating when you look for a specific function and don't find it. All in all, it does help me when I can't remember the specific syntax for the majority of commands I can't recall from direct memory (which seems to be increasing with age!). I am in general a fan of the "in a nutshell" series and not disappointed in this one.

This is a nice memory jog reference book. Fortunately, it covers many 'flavors' of SQL (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, etc) for each entry. However, the index is lacking, many clauses are not included in the index, and -IMO- many index entries are not logically placed. I think had this book been as complete as the JavaScript Pocketguide it would have gotten 5 starts. All and all, still a very nice reference 85% of the time.

Useful, worth to have in your office (locked), it contemplates many unknown SQL capabilities and feature in the SQL language itself. It's worth to take a look on this book so you understand the logic behind SQL rather that using an interface like PL/SQL or DBArtisan,

While this is a very good reference book and deserves the 4 stars, I continually get frustrated with 1 thing: The index is poor. I don't know how many times after not finding something in the index I've had to skim through the table of contents and then search a bit through the pages. This can be very frustrating for a reference book.Again, though, the content has been very helpful for months of Oracle & MySQL reference.
