This is a great book for when you know a little bit Scala already, but you're looking for some best practices and practical solutions when building an application. The book is more of a reference manual than a reading book. It consists of a large number of practical problems and their solutions. But what I liked is that for every topic there is not only a solution, but also a paragraph called 'discussion' which goes a little deeper into the subject. One could wonder why one would need such a book if you could just Google your question and find the answers on the Internet. But the trouble with that approach is that, in particular for Scala, for each problem there are many possible ways to solve it. And some of them might not be good practice, might be deprecated or just plain wrong. This book gives solid answers, teaches about best practices and tries to tell you where to apply to solution and where not.

Of the several Scala books I own, this one is the clear winner. Mr. Alexander's presentation is very clear throughout. Every recipe is thorough, not only in its explanation, but also in its fine details. In following any recipe, one never has to ask either, "hmm, what's missing here, because it won't work as advertised," nor, "why did I have to do that; it isn't clear?" What's truly impressive is the breadth of coverage. Want to use Akka? No problem: Mr. Alexander has the best documentation of that widely-used and justly-popular framework. Want to use JSON? Covered. Want to build a Web service? Multiple recipes covering multiple alternate frameworks with the pros and cons of each one. O'Reilly is killing it lately, and this book exemplifies the quality of its library.

"If new programmers have time to learn only one language this year, it should be Scala." That's a quote from a top MIT engineer and professor and Google employee, from a conference I attended on "Most likely successors to JAVA." Say what? I'm a roboticist and engineer, and to look absolutely idiotic, I'd never even HEARD of Scala until that moment! But I HAD heard of LISP, Haskell, C#, Java and my beloved Python. Little did I realize before the conference (3 years ago) that Scala actually COMBINES the best of all those, runs on the Java JVM, uses tools like Ant seamlessly, and has non-glue access to ALL the Java libraries. But that's just the beginning. Scala is niether purely functional nor purely imperative, is static typed, yet works wonderfully in my real time robotics applications. Unlike even C#, let alone Java, you can do "quick" object compile commands without statics or class declarations, just like a script! You can access the JVM compiler, or .net. or scala's own interpreter, depending on your need. WOW. Scala has the functional bennies of pattern matching, macros, currying, tail recursion, immutability, algebraic types, lazy evaluation, pattern matching and many more; fixes the non unified type and type erasure as well as checked exceptions problems in Java (and many others); Scala has a unified type system (like C#) unlike Java, even though it is Java seamless! So what do all these wonderful things have to do with this gem of a book? Easy: what good is a book if it just rehashes the Java features and misses the unique wonders of Scala? THIS TEXT DELIVERS! By that I mean it gives examples of ALL the differences, in English and code, that make this language a winner among winners. At over 700 pages, you can frame this amazing book as a learning text, a reference, a cookbook, an encyclopedia, and for sure a valued friend for the library of every Java and C# jock. Because of parallel, concurrency and run time features (dear to the heart of roboticists, circuit folks like me), I believe that this text gives powerful evidence that Scala could not only be the next Java, but next C in circuits, Erlang in parallel (Early Scala used the Actor model, but that is being phased out for AKKA in the next few releases), and Lisp in functional! You don't need to know Scala to benefit from this book, and in fact you CAN LEARN Scala just as well with this book as any of the intro Scala texts, and save yourself a ton of money and duplication, BUT like those many fine intro texts, you still have to understand basic OOP/ functional or both (in other words use it to learn your soon to be favorite language, but not to learn basic programming). In other words, if classes, functions, types, recursion, objects etc. still confuse you, this isn't the place to start. Another cool thing about both this text and Scala is that they get rid of the very silly "never use go to" that was supposedly the hallmark of imperative, and cut through all that baloney (can you say jump statements?) with very clear and simple switch and other alternatives. Both day to day coders like myself will love this cookbook, as well as "purists" who look down their noses at Java itself due to Prolog or Lisp. THIS TEXT AND THIS LANGUAGE truly blend all the best features of both worlds!Highly recommended for coders of all skills, even advanced pros, and of course oddballs like me who are more into circuits, embedded and run - real time monsters, robotics, etc. If you're just getting out of High School and are considering which language to get started with, I'm not trashing Java (and still LOVE Lisp and Python), but I've got to say I wish I'd read this text when making those decisions! Due to being an O'reilly tome, the code also is relatively bulletproof and most of the snippets I tried ran flawlessly, but out of nearly 1,000 yummy pieces of this pie, I've only tried about 100, so take it in that context. Most authors (including this text) don't consider Scala a good language to use to "learn basic programming" -- but also concede that since Twitter, Netflix and LinkedIn run on it (among many others) it IS worth eventually learning.ROBOTICIST/ INVENTOR EMAILER ANSWER: YES, I do think this also could be a C or C++ successor, including in embedded. Surely not as a "spice" circuit compiler, but more for very large, data intensive applications just as when you move from Arduino schemes to Linux as you evolve. If I were Apple, I'd be eyeing it in lieu of C++ right now. I mean, think about it, both .net and JVM are used in embedded bricks today. One of our most complex, 60 degrees of freedom pick and pack machines includes the JVM. There are Haskell and Scheme solutions that would make the Java used MUCH better, and Scala allows that "big data," parallel combination to happen ON the JVM, while adding the wonderfully robust Matlab/simulink like libraries of functional CAS approaches, and soon, AKKA.Truly next decade's language in my opinion, granted after only using it for a few years (remember, fully stable versions are still coming out as this review is being written! If you're a patent type or circuit/ software developer, N.B.). If you also think the relatively new Oracle/Sun thing might mean bye bye Java innovation... well, here's a place to turn! We get a lot of requests to review books, and there seems to be a new Scala book coming out every month, so if that's any indication, here's a language that looks like a clear frontrunner for the Java throne.Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. We always buy the items we review for the sake of objectivity, and although we search for gems, are not shy about trashing an item if it's a waste of time or money for Amazon shoppers. If the reviewer identifies herself, her job or her field, it is only as a point of reference to help you gauge the background and any biases.

I am an expert software developer in C/C++/Python/PHP, but not in Scala. I purchased this book to improve my Scala skills. This book is one of those books that I just love to read and reference. Very good writing style, concise and clear. Huge number of well explained examples. If you are learning Scala put this book on your shopping list. This book is a great learning tool and reference.

Although the author has strong consulting background the view on the bookis more on the object-oriented programming side rather than the functionalprogramming side. If you are looking for functional programming recipes withgood argumentation, this book is not the way to go ...

I chose the highest rating for the following reasons:(a) the content fully justifies the title (cookbook recipes): all recipes there are illustrated with lucid and relevant pieces of code.(b) the content exceeds expectations: not only you can find numerous practical recipes; they are also augmented by discussion, which attempts to pour light on why the code is written the way it is, and this discussion is almost always helpful, sometimes even pretty deep as for the book that is supposed to provide... well - recipes. You can't use the book to begin studying Scala - you have to be introduced to the language by some systematic approach first. But, if you already read about Scala just a little, and used it just a little, then it is a very useful reference book and also text enriching your horizons.

Really amazing book, my favorite Scala book thus far. Although I'm tempted to give this book 1 star because Alvin Alexander (the author) has 95% of this book available online for free at scalacookbook dot com. So I don't see the value in buying this book at all. I intend on returning it. However this is a review of the book itself, so leave it at 5 stars. Many other books are dense and poorly constructed with overly complicated examples. This book so practical, concise, and uses examples that are more complicated than necessary

Great book for those entering the scala world! Learning through use cases is a great way to get your feet wet. Alvin touches a ton of broad areas in the language without going too deep into design decisions.

These nonfiction readers have a main sight word for each book. I bought them to use with my 1st grade class. The pictures and topics are overall interesting and engaging. After buying this set, I ended up getting other ones at the different levels (so far I have found levels A-D books). You get 25 small books in each set, a plus, since some sets come with less or have repeat titles. The book bindings are stitched, but I knew that going in, so it wasn't a detractor.

This set of books is wonderful if your child has to master the Fry sight word list for Kindergarten! There's one book for each word and all of the books are about engaging science and social studies topics. These books were very helpful with practicing reading with my son. We purchased levels C and D as well and also enjoyed them. Would love a set for first grade words!

I just got these and i wanted to add photos for other people to see. I can’t fairy review it yet until I try themI recently used BOB books level 1 and my 5 year old found them super boring and complained every time. However- he did learn to read a bunch of words but he also memorized the stories so i dunno how helpful that was. Bob books also made no sense and I think these new books might be more interesting.I wanted to try a new company’s books to see if he’d find them more interesting. This comes with 25 booksAll in full color and photosComes with a workbook as well (same size as the rest of the books)Comes with 12 stickersSome pages are duplicate in the SHE book. The stories are very repetitive and only a few words change from page to page- this allows my son to remember most of the sentence. Not sure if this is good or bad. But so far my son enjoys reading these books.I also like the interactive books that have you count things, tell what time is on the clock, or spot the triangles.UPDATE: i’ve been reading these with my son for about 2 weeks now and he really enjoys these. When i show him BOB books he literally yells NOOOO 😂. My son has improved a lot in the last 2 weeks. He’s retaining a lot of sight words and is reading 4 and 5 letter words now which is amazing.

Perfect set for my grandson who will be going into the first grade this fall. He was tired of the "Bob Books" so when he picked this set out he was happy. They are great using photographic books to help him with his sight words & reading confidence. We are pleased with the purchase. After 2 weeks he is re-reading the entire series again and enjoying them still. It was a great purchase for him.

Great books! I bought these for a book drive my work was hosting for an elementary school we sponsor! Once everyone at work saw these books, they purchased some for their own children! I will be getting these for my grandson in the very near future!!

These nonfiction sight word readers repeat the sight word of focus on every page, and have simple, repetitive sentences I bought them to use with my beginning readers (kids who are just starting to read words). The pictures and topics are engaging. I would recommend this series to teachers and parents who are looking for good books to support reading practice.

Great little books for beginning readers. The are short enough to read several a day which gives a sense of accomplishment. The pictures are bright and colorful and very helpful to enable children to decode non sight words. I have the entire set and I highly recommend them!

Good readers for my Kindergarten twins (one has been on Level D for a while and one just passed to Level D). The stories are fun and keep the kids engaged. The sight word being featured is BOLD on every page to help them recognize it. These books have helped my kids tremendously learn to read. They read these. or similar ones in school, so it is good to keep the reading material consistent at home.

I am an avid Lisa fan, and own 99% of all her published work. This novel doesn’t disappoint. I was swept away to another land, and learned about the heartbreaking events from back to back wars, and the awe inspiring actions of the haenyeo at a little place called Jeju.Lisa’s books often cover a range of time periods in China, so this was a refreshing change that sweeps you away to Korea. I was involved with my characters, crying when they cried and laughing when they laughed.Ms. See has once again managed to entwine an amazing tale of womanhood, survival, and courage into the historical wonders and atrocities that happened in a land and time far away. I regretted finishing the book, and at the same time, I am already planning to read it a second time very soon. Like all of Lisa’s books, this book is something you will want to add to your collection, so you can revisit the characters again and again.

It's amazing the power of a book can have on a life and I am not talking about this one. Somewhere some nameless bureaucrat decided that the citizens of a Korean island, Jeju, needed copies of the book, Heidi, set in the Swiss Alps. Copies were distributed and for some reason the citizens fell in love with it. They sat around and read it as families and discussed it at work. It made a difference in people's lives. I just loved that story.I have always admired Lisa See's books but I struggled with this one on several different levels. Yes, It was interesting story and I learned quite a bit but the violence in it was a real problem for me. At about 60% through I almost set it aside as it was so graphic. Yet I kept on and, in the end, I am glad I did.It is the story of a matriarchal society where the women work as haenyeo divers. They dive in the ocean and harvest the sea's treasures including abalone and octopus. They have amazing body chemistry to withstand the cold and the hardship. The men stay home and tend the children and make light meals. Of course, it is not as good as it seems. Property is still in the man's name. They often take the women's wages and gamble and drink it away. As their daughters grow up they take over the child raising and food preparation and the men are left with nothing to do. As the women trudge home from a long day of sea harvesting, they come home and clean and cook and mind children. It's not as idyllic as it seems.Because of Jeju's location, it has a long history of occupation first by the Japanese then the Americans. Both are cruel and there is massacre after massacre. Villages are burned and large burial grounds appear. Life is a constant struggle and they soon learn not to say anything because of all the informants to all the different competing military factions. The story is told around two best friends's lives, Mi-ja and Young-sook. They grew up together and became divers and then their paths diverged after marriage and their struggles will break your heart. While I suspect most will be moved Young-sook, it is Mi-ja's story that grabbed my heart. An interesting book that gave a glimpse into another way of life that I had no idea about before reading it.

Two friends spend their lives loving and hating each other, being haunted by the mistakes affecting them and their haenyeo community. They are women divers who have learned to dive without the use of diving masks, oxygen or any other supportive equipment. They rely on learning to breathe in vital air and breathe out the song of sumbisori, air let out with a unique sound for each woman. They live on Jeju Island off the southern coast of Korea, a land they believe was created by the Shaman Goddesses, creating a land of lava rocks, cones and walls. The residents have created a matriarchal society loved by each resident. Their story is a celebration of life!Young-Sook has tremendous respect for her mother who is Chief of the haenyeo in one of the local communities until she dies in an accident while diving. Another young woman has another accident that changes her life forever. Their work guarantees survival, especially in the troublesome times that soon follow. Jeju Island residents are the subjects of the Japanese Army who have invaded the country and mandated laws of behavior, inflicting death on many for the slightest infraction of rules.Mi-ja is the daughter of a Japanese collaborator. This reputation haunts her for her entire life. Even though Young-Sook’s mother takes her in with kindness and teachers her to be a haenyeo, Young Sook’s grandmother despises her and will never trust her, a belief that will literally become part of Mi-ja’s choices during one of the most tragic, devastating moments of the story. Young Sook marries the love of her life but Mi-ja marries a man who is evil personified, an act none will understand until it is too late and after too much betrayal and damage. An uprising called the 4.3 incident instigates the death of thousands. The deaths to three members of Young-Sook’s family are tragically depicted, all because of Mi-ja’s response to a request begged by her best friend. The love between these two women will stay strong, although readers will for a time doubt the primitive and passionate aspects of that love. Scientists and sociologists will make this community a subject of lengthy study and amazed respect! It is the children of these women who will clarify truth for them and the readers. These pages commemorate a truly unique and amazing story that readers will never forget! This is astonishing historical fiction, a must read for all!

Love all of Lisa See,s books and this doesn't disappoint! Enjoyed learning about the seas and what those women did for their families. And how forgiving or not forgiving can alter your life.

I enjoy Lisa See’s storytelling and her characters. This is a very sad and at times brutal tale of what happened in Korea in the 1940s. I never heard of these specific events but now I am curious to learn more about this unique group of women divers

I had no idea at all what to expect when I received an advance copy of The Old Drift, but I am beyond happy; I am thrilled to have read it. This is a story that just pulls you in until you are completely immersed. To call it amazing and breathtaking doesn’t do it justice, and to say it is just the story of three multicultural families and the history of a country in Africa is an understatement. It's a sprawling saga, like a mystery you can’t wait to solve, a ball of string that keeps unwinding or an onion with many, many layers. It’s six degrees of separation at its best – the story goes from person to person to person and location to location, but all are cleverly linked. You suddenly look up and go “Oh!” because it’s that person or that place or that event again. The writing is magnificent. The Old Drift is a tale of a changing world, a changing nation, a changing people, with all the love, longing, desire, and loss that go with it. The cruelties and the exploitation, not just by the colonials, but by each other, are shocking. You get so involved with the characters that you want to step in and stop the bad times, let their hopes and dreams come true. This history was at once so foreign to me yet at the same time so familiar, so compellingly filled with the music and scents and sensations of Zambia brought to life by author Namwali Serpell. A cloud of sadness and futility hang over everything, yet hope, determination and courage push through. It’s sometimes magical, sometimes horrifying. It’s history, fairytale, romance and science fiction all rolled into one satisfying story. This is not a book you read lightly, not one you read to escape, but a book you won’t soon forget.

How much do you know about Zambia? If you're like me, probably not much. This wonderfully written, sprawling novel, however, may well inspire you (like me) to read more about its history and culture. Told through the eyes of three families, all linked in ways that might not be immediately obvious, this is a mix of fact and fiction, with some magical realism to boot. Beginning in 1904 and moving through the century to 2020, it's a sometimes frustrating look at a country and its people. Parts of this do drag a bit but power through because there's always something different around the corner. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Note that this is a long novel and might even be best read in hard copy to take best advantage of the family tree.

I received a copy of The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell from the Publisher (Hogarth/ Penguin Random House) in exchange for an honest review. The Old Drift is scheduled for release March 26, 2019.The Old Drift takes place mostly on the banks of the Zambezi River in a young country sprung from an old colonial settlement called the Old Drift. The story focuses on the intertwining histories of three families. We see the personal trials of the members of these families, their brushes with political agenda and movements, the battle against a virus, and a desire to frame the future. This story combines actual history, dreams of the future, and touches of magical realism. This story follows nine main characters, which initially concerned me. At the front of the book is a family tree, outlining how the nine characters listed in the table of contents are connected. When I saw this, I was worried that I would not enjoy this story. The truth is, I sometimes struggle to keep track of names during a story, so stories that follow a large cast through long periods of time sometimes lose me. The characters begin to blur together, and I fail to keep track of them as individuals through the epic. This was not much of an issue for me in this story. Serpell does such a great job of drawing clear characters that for the bulk of the story, I was very clear on who’s who. I did begin to suffer some blur toward the end of the story with the featured males, Jacob and Joseph. I think this partially intentional on the part of the author, leading to the mystery that if left at the end for you to imagine your way through.Serpell did a good job of taking me to a land that was foreign, yet had touches of the familiar. This former English colony was a fascinating blend of traditional African features and imported English touches. This was true of many elements of the story. I was never clear where the line was between foreign and domestic, between reality and imagined.
