Easy and fun to read. A lot of useful tables. I particularly liked the overview on fruits and veggies to grow with your hydroponic system. Would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in hydroponic gardening.

While having a lot of data on various kinds of hydroponic frameworks, this book (for me) doesn't give the meat and potatoes I was searching for. The configuration/design of the book helps me more to remember a school research paper as opposed to a"book". Gratefully the cost wasn't much.

I found this overwhelming. So much so that I stopped reading half way through and decided not to do hydroponics. Too much can go wrong according to this book! This was a book dissuading peple to do aqua or hydro ponics!

This book gives a great overview of many of the different types of hydroponics systems and the pros and cons of each one. I look forward to the next book in the series!

While having quite a bit of information on different types of hydroponic systems, this book (for me) doesn't give the meat and potatoes I was looking for. The format/layout of the book reminds me more of a college term paper rather than a"book". Thankfully the cost wasn't much.

I am interested in growing hydroponics and have read a plethora of different books and guides on this topic. This book was enjoyable and had a wealth of info for me to consider when I dive deep next Spring. Highly recommended for people who are considering going into Hydroponics. Well worth the read!

Well thought out common language. Really good material.

I was a bit skeptical to purchase this book due to it being new and not having many reviews. But I'm glad I did. It's a solid go2 guide - very educational for noobs and novices alike. Good descriptions with easy to follow steps. The best part is - I've just started putting it into action.

Concise. With a few interesting new facts and a very useful "brand section"Certainly introductory level but a good pathway on the road of horologie appreciation.

I never knew how much i didn't know about these mechanical miracles. Beautifully written for dummies and the well learnt

Too much detail in some areas and assumptions that a beginner would know some of The nomenclature. Short read for a beginner.

Rather good book but still a bit too technical on explanations. Moreover, hint of bias in some of the text.

I've read much Lewis, but avoided this one as I thought it would be mostly just for English or Lit majors - an academic book of little interest philosophically. I should have known better, seeing as it's Lewis, but that's what I thought. This book is an amazing depiction of the Medieval worldview, one which Lewis obviously loved and reflected throughout his books - from the Centaurs of the Chronicles of Narnia to the influence of role of the angelic planetary rulers in the Space Trilogy. If you're interested in worldview, definitely read this book. Worldview has become trendy lately, but the concept is nothing new - and Lewis handles it with his characteristic skill and brevity in this book. This is a clearer and more fascinating portrayal of a worldview than you'll get in any book with "worldview" in the title. If you're interested in philosophy, definitely read this. The reversal or loss of many medieval beliefs have dangerous consequences to human thought (and, indeed, to humankind), which Lewis explores more thoroughly in Abolition of Man.Basically, just read this book. Like so many Lewis books, it's simply indispensable.

The Discarded Image revolutionized my understanding of the medieval mind. Everyone knows that Christopher Columbus did not really develop the theory that the world was round. Ptolemy had proven the world to be round centuries before Christ and no known civilization even before Ptolemy had believed it was flat. Well it turns out that the shape of the world isn't the only ancient truth that enlightenment humanists have stolen credit for. The Copernican principle is older than either Galileo or Copernicus, Frank Drake wasn't the first person to assume there was mortal life scattered throughout the galaxy. Medieval man wasn't the backward savage that progressivism requires him to be. Lewis takes us through the ancient and medieval texts that had the greatest impact on medieval man and introduces us to the ancestors we really had. They don't resemble the Monty Python sketch.

Hard going for a dimwit like me but well worth it. Rolls you through and up to the edge of the organized thinking of the Medieval period to the precipice of its abandonment in the Renaissance wherein much is falsely attributed to the Medieval. For example, as falsely accused by the Renaissance, the Medievals did not think the earth was at the center because people were so great, but because people are so corrupt that they deserve to dwell at the lowest, most corrupt sphere. Oh yes, and by the way it IS a sphere. Flat-earthers come in reaction to the high-handedness and TRULY homocentric attitude of the Renaissance, claiming a preexisting belief that never was. Lewis's principal thrust seems to be much the same as a well-trained anthropologist: to really understand the period, you have to enter as much as possible into its own point of view, not just throw rocks at it from some "superior" position, as did much of the Renaissance. What Lewis does in this book is provide a concise yet profound survey of Medieval thinking so that one might go forward on one's own to enjoy/understand the vast available library of the Medieval. I think the author's deliberate intent was to provide "milk" for his students as they began their program of tutoring with him, to lead them into deeper study. And in so keeping, the organization o f the material does not so much tell you about Medieval thinking, but leads you to discover it for yourself. Wish I could have been one of this guy's students. Makes me want to spin a Medieval science fiction yarn.

"The Discarded Image: An Introduction to Medieval and Renaissance Literature", by C. S. Lewis, has the benefit of the author's lifetime of study in two great ages: the Pagan Classical that perished, and the Christian Medieval that rose in its place. The latter cannot be understood properly without the former, and our current age is best known in understanding both. The author's objective is to instruct us in that understanding.I count Lewis among my favorite authors, but after being exposed to deeper and more orthodox writers over the years I've come to read him - if still very enjoyably - much more carefully. While I agree with the unanimous reviews that glowingly praise this work, he does strike some discordant notes. Lewis was a loyal member of that church "by law established" and its divines, including the heretic Cranmer and the latitudinarian Hooker, helped shape his thought. This is a High-Church Anglican's take on the Middle Ages. The first item that really stands out is that someone with no previous knowledge of the Middle Ages may get wrong notions about the relative importance of its writers. Milton is consulted much more often than Dante, even though the latter is the epitome of the Medieval poet, while Milton is considered by most to be a later, paler imitation. Aquinas gets a handful of mentions, about the same as Donne; Albert gets a nod or two, while Petrarch and Boccaccio are barely acknowledged. Bede is mentioned once in passing. Chaucer, Gower and Spencer are dominant. The heavy leaning on the English writers doesn't invalidate Lewis' view of the Medieval Model, but the reader relying primarily on him will miss a good portion of its detail.Another note of discord is that Lewis drops hints about misperceptions of the period, but he never follows up or explains their importance. For instance, in the section on Cicero's De Republica (page 28) Lewis says his attitude to the body was to be an "unfortunate legacy" for Medieval Christians. Exactly how was this problem unique to Medieval Christians? The idea of the soul being in exile in the (evil) body and being free upon death was a Gnostic heresy from the very birth of the Church. Manichaeism in subsequent centuries had a large following (St. Augustine before his conversion for one), and Catharism (which originated with the Bulgars in the east) was vigorously fought against by the Medieval Church. The puritanical idea of man's total depravity until this mortal coil is shed was a very much more unfortunate legacy for Reformation-era Christians than for Medieval ones.Along this same line, Lewis rather astoundingly says that the cult of the saints (more than that of the angels) was "a danger to monotheism in the Middle Ages." He doesn't elaborate further, but I will: veneration of the Blessed Virgin and the cult of the saints was part of Christianity since its beginnings; the relics in the catacombs and other archaeological findings speak to their importance dating to the 1st Century. As far back as the Old Testament, the bones of the patriarchs are treated with reverence. Interestingly, the Latin Christians received this practice from the East. It wasn't until the Islamic conquests of the seventh century that the shrines of the Holy Land and their relics were destroyed, and it was their influence that helped create the iconoclastic controversy among Greek Christians (I wonder how many Protestants realize their iconoclasm is at root a Muslim thing?) The idea that Dulia and Hyperdulia were a threat to monotheism is a Protestant invention. Richard II had consecrated England to Our Lady, calling his country "Mary's Dowry"; he knew, as everyone else knew, that the BVM and the saints were created beings not to be confused with God. The improperly understood doctrine of the Trinity is the real danger to monotheism Lewis should have mentioned - just ask any Arian, Sabellian, Docetist, Monophysite, Adoptionist, Nestorian, Socinian, or Unitarian. The Philosophy of History is another topic on which Lewis touches that doesn't ring true. To my chagrin, he deprecates the idea by explaining that it is not uniquely Christian since many cultures seemed to have employed similar philosophies, and that even if it were unique, it is not particularly meritorious. In one swoop Lewis wipes out the main thesis of St. Augustine's City of God, and renders Scholastic philosophers from Aquinas to Gilson moot. The problem is that Lewis is just plain wrong: it's one thing to have a sense of "destiny" or to think of oneself as part of a "chosen people" - that is not a philosophy - it's quite another to have worked out an entire Soteriological system that includes an event dubbed "the fullness of time" where God enters carnally into history and redeems sinful man for Himself. The bequeathing of a Philosophy of History to the world is very real, it is uniquely Christian, and there is not now nor has there ever been anything like it in the history of man. This is a big miss by Lewis.Lastly, in this giant bouquet thrown to the Middle Ages, could not a single rose be strewn at the door of the Catholic Church? It's true that when one speaks about Christian belief in Medieval times that one is speaking about the Catholic Church, but Lewis shouldn't assume his readers know that. He uses any form of the word "Catholic" but once - and that in reference to a book title on page 124, the "Catholicon Anglicum". How Lewis can delight in the beauty and order of the Medieval Model and not let the reader in on the fact that a key characteristic - its hierarchy - was basically a mirror of the Catholic Church is puzzling. When he discusses how the earth lays on the outskirts of the universal drama, which has its eternal center in God, Lewis missed an opportunity to make the obvious connection to the Catholic Mass. With its vicariousness and its making-present that eternal center on every altar in every Church in the world, Lewis could have drawn the Model more completely and more accurately: the Faith (and Reason) of the Medieval Age informed it's understanding of the physical world, and both of these elements were the foundation of its literature. In closing, I want to note where I think Lewis' deepest understanding of Medieval literature ultimately resided. In another and perhaps his most personal work, A Grief Observed, it is to Dante that Lewis turns to express the moment of his wife's death: "She said not to me but to the chaplain, 'I am at peace with God.' She smiled, but not at me. Poi si torno all' eterna fontana" [then towards the eternal fountain turn'd - canto XXXI, Paradiso]After challenging some of Lewis' assertions in the above paragraphs, I want to reiterate that there is still a great deal to love about this book. Most of those reasons have been highlighted in other reviews, so I'll have mercy on the reader of this review and simply stop right here.

Review

WINNER: 2017 JAMES BEARD FOUNDATION BOOK AWARD, BEVERAGEWINNER: 2017 SPIRITED AWARDS (TALES OF THE COCKTAIL): BEST NEW COCKTAIL & BARTENDING BOOK"Martin and Rebecca Cate are alchemists—Reyn Spooner–wearing, volcano-bowl-igniting, Polynesian-popping, double-straining, Aku-Aku swilling alchemists. Which is to say, they are the finest kind of alchemists known to walk the earth. Buy this book. It will bring you a little bit closer to paradise.”—Wayne Curtis, author, And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in Ten Cocktails“With Smuggler’s Cove, Martin Cate did the impossible, folding up a whole rum-soaked sailing ship so that it would fit into a not-very-large San Francisco storefront. Now he’s done it again, and taken that tiki bar--one of the very finest bars I know—and folded it up so it fits between the pages of a book. Just add rum, and watch Smuggler’s Cove—and the whole vibrant, geeky, just a little bit unhinged world of tiki it so perfectly exemplifies— unfold in your lap.”—David Wondrich, author of Imbibe! and Punch“Tiki is simultaneously whimsical and sincere, simple and shockingly complex, which means understanding it can be challenging. This indispensable book explains it all—and is the definitive volume on one of the cocktail world’s most fascinating and complex genres. But in the end, tiki’s essence is based on captivating stories and exotic drinks, and Martin Cate’s Smuggler’s Cove is a tour de force in both.” —Jordan Mackay, wine and spirits writer, and coauthor of Secrets of the Sommeliers  “Martin Cate understands tiki like few others do. He not only knows how to ask the right questions; in this book, he also answers many questions that I didn’t know I had. The old guard of Donn, Vic, and Steve can rest easy now that they have this champion of their tradition bringing tiki into the new millennium.” —Sven Kirsten, author of The Book of Tiki, Tiki Modern, and Tiki Pop “Here at last are the secrets behind one of the world’s best bars. The Cates have written an engaging, knowing, and personal book that is sure to please tiki lovers, cocktail lovers, and especially tiki-cocktail lovers. Abandon angst, all ye who enter here: like Smuggler’s Cove itself, these pages take leisure time very seriously.” —Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, author of Potions of the Caribbean  “Martin Cate is an authority on rum, and this book will take your level of understanding of this noble yet complex spirit to a new level. Martin offers his own illuminating rum classification system, and also tackles controversial topics head-on, such as sweetening and the use of nebulous age statements. An absolute must-have for rum enthusiasts.” —Richard Seale, master distiller, Foursquare Rum Distillery, Barbados “The twenty-first-century revival of tiki cocktails was spearheaded by a handful of passionate tiki-geeks, Martin Cate among them. With Smuggler’s Cove, Martin and Rebecca teach you everything you need to know to become a tiki-geek in your own right—and to see the world with their Polynesian passion.” –Gaz Regan, author of The Joy of Mixology and The Negroni “Tiki culture is enmeshed with rum, and the authors offer a master class on it, covering its history and many varieties, as well as digressions on coring pineapples for cocktails and where to score cocktail umbrellas. It’s a terrifically fun and informative read, and the definitive resource on the topic.”– Publishers Weekly, Starred Review “The book walks readers through the history of tiki, as well as 100 recipes for cocktails. Not sure where to start with rum? There's a beginners' guide. There are also party tips, garnishing guides, and much more. In other words, all you need are some paper umbrellas and your summer is made.”– Epicurious “Happily, the modern tiki era now has its own Magna Carta …. It’s a lavishly illustrated, seriously researched, 350-page tome with more than 100 recipes, along with a well-written history and sketches of some of the lesser known tiki lights . . .”– The Daily Beast"Martin and Rebecca Cate have managed to create an irresistible shrine to the magic of Polynesian pop culture. Beautifully designed and dripping in kitsch by way of photos by Dylan + Jeni, this is set to be the cocktail book of the summer."– Punch "Your new tiki bible."– Eater "With more than 100 recipes, both classic and modern (including homemade grenadine and coconut cream, of course), Smuggler's Cove is for anyone who appreciates the beauty of tropical drinks and wants to dig in deeper. A primer on essential tiki techniques as well as a thorough, authoritative guide to rum take you further than the typical booze book."– Saveur"Martin Cate is a scholar of tiki, and this long-anticipated cookbook is a respectful (and even academic) glimpse into that culture. . . . Smuggler’s Cove isn't just a book of recipes—it's a guide on how to transplant a beloved bar into your home."– Epicurious "A lively exploration of our country's drinking history (and the current tiki scene), it's essential reading for rum lovers, offering the best categorization of the headspinning-ly diverse spirit that I've encountered."– Serious Eats"It's a must-have for any Mai Tai lover, Trader Vic's devotee or Hawaiian traveler . . .  The book works equally well as a cocktail how-to, a rum guide, tiki party inspiration or must-do itinerary."– San Jose Mercury News

About the Author

MARTIN CATE is a rum and exotic cocktail expert and the owner of Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco. Smuggler’s Cove opened in 2009 and has been named one of the World’s 50 Best Bars (Drinks International, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015), 50 Best Bars on Earth (The Sunday Times, London), Top Ten Food and Beverage Concepts of the Last 25 Years (Cheers Magazine), 13 Most Influential Bars of the 21st Century (Liquor.com), and America’s Best Bars (Playboy, 2012 and Esquire, 2013). Smuggler's Cove was also awarded Best American Cocktail Bar at the 2016 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards. A member of the United States Bartenders Guild (USBG), Martin conducts educational seminars and adjudicates rum and cocktail competitions across the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. In 2015, along with partners Alex Smith and John Park, Martin opened Whitechapel in San Francisco to bring the same passion for history and craft to the world of gin. He is also the co-owner of Hale Pele in Portland and a partner in Lost Lake in Chicago and False Idol in San Diego. In 1999, REBECCA CATE inadvertently fueled Martin’s madness by famously uttering words (which she thought were a joke) about making a spare bedroom a home tiki bar. Since then, however, she too has been swept up in the tiki fantasia, first as an enthusiast, then helping Martin open and run Smuggler’s Cove, while juggling a full-time career as a research psychologist “on the side.” Rebecca earned her PhD in personality and social psychology from The University of California at Berkeley in 2006, and has spent over a decade leading large-scale studies of behavioral health interventions as well as topics related to retirement and longevity. The opportunity to coauthor this book has allowed what had been just a weekend and vacation escape to turn into a full-time journey.

So, I've always been a fan of the "zombie" drink, but it is pretty hard to find a good one. There is so much rum in it that if you get the ingredients or ratios wrong, it turns into an unpleasant shot of rum and bad flavors. So, I rarely order them.Last October, I tried to make one, thinking a "zombie" would be a perfect drink for a Halloween party, and thinking it would be nice to learn how to make one so I didn't have to rely on the lame ones I have received in the past. A couple of attempts using internet recipes turned out very badly. Sigh.Just wait - I'm getting to the book ...In November, we got an invitation to a tiki bar in San Diego called "False Idol" and I decided to ordered their zombie. The angels sang. The pearly gates opened and I walked into heaven. Awesome. So, in December, I was travelling in San Francisco and went to the Tonga Room there. It was very disappointing. Drinks were quite poor, which was a big surprise for such a long-established icon. As I was reading Yelp reviews on the Tonga Room, I saw mention of a place called Smuggles Cove in San Francisco that had won awards, voted best bar in America, one of the best in the world, yada, yada, yada. And I was kicking myself for going to the Tonga Room instead of Smugglers Cove. Apparently the owner, Martin Cate, really knows his cocktails, and - ta-da - is a partner in the False Idol in San Diego and the guy behind the drinks there !In January, I stumbled upon his book on Amazon - some web search or Amazon search brought it up, I'm sure. I don't remember. I saw the title, noted the author, saw that it had recipes in it and ordered it. I was a little concerned that it would be lots of stories and not much recpies, but it turns out it is alot of stories and also alot of recipes.I am very surprised that a bar owner in a business where drink recpies have been traditionally kept secret is willing to spill the beans like this. He has presented so many secrets, along with the stories and history behind the secrets and also given credit to alot of the people responsible for digging up the secrets. It's mighty big of him, I think, and consider this a big "thank you" for writing this book. Some good things about the book:- Martin has developed a list of rum categories based on production method to assist in the selection of rums for the recipes. Most of the recipes in the book don't call for a particular brand and style of rum, but call for a certain category of rum, which could be one of many brands and styles. It is really smart and really helps the budget, too, because you don't have to buy the $80 bottle if you don't want to.- Really a lot of recipes in here. I saw one Amazon reivew saying there weren't many recipes. That is just wrong. The recipes are scattered throughout the book and relate to the text in each chapter, but there are more than anyone could want.- Also, reading between the lines, you can figure out how to take any of these cocktails and change the ingredients to make your own recipes, so the number of recipes is unlimited if you are willing to experiment.- Martin lists a whole bunch of syrups and concoctions that are used in the recipes. This is very helpful, and again - very generous of him to show us these secrets from his bars. Real grenadine syrup, demerera sugar syrup, cinnamon syrup, passion fruit syrup, etc.- I am surprised by a couple things. First - that the drinks are not necessarily super sweet and fruity. Second, there are an extraordinary number of interesting ingredients that I never knew existed or how they were used. These ingredients are herbal, spicey or savory and keep the drinks from getting too that sweet.- Great details on ice choice and mixing techniques.- I'm not that much into tiki decor so alot of that design stuff was not interesting to me, but I also feel the book would be incomplete without it.Things I would add or change / the downside:- I would like to see some descriptions of the non-rum ingredients on the recipe pages. As I was looking through the recipes, many listed ingredients that I didn't know what the heck they were. Maybe they were in the text, but I didn't want to hunt through and find it. It would be nice if some explanation were given for those, or maybe put a little reference section in the back and add a page number to the recipe so you can read up on it, like "Benedictine (see page 444)".- Some of the syrups were a little sweet, making it difficult to adjust the recipe without changing the sweetness. For example, I made a drink with the cinnamon syrup and wanted more cinnamon flavor. So, I added some cinnamon syrup, but it was too sweet. The syrups make perfect sense in a bar where you want the bartenders to make the same thing every time, and save some work. But if you want to tinker, it may be better to just add the ingredients separately.- This is an expensive hobby. Martin has done a good job making sure we don't waste our money by putting expensive ingredients into bad cocktails, but it aint cheap.I have made about 6 of the recipes so far. Enjoying them all, especially the zombie and the Planters Punch !I hope to meet Martin some day. He's done a great job with his bar in San Diego and the book. Thanks a bunch !

Smuggler's Cove is the book to have for tiki cocktails. I've made three of the drinks so far and they have all been winners. One of the best things about the book is the author lists 7 types of rum and the recipes specify a type instead of a specific bottle which means the your home bar only needs 7 bottles of rum. Many cocktail books call for specific bottles which gets both expensive and unwieldy after awhile. The recipes aren't overly complicated which I appreciate as well. I have books from other famous bars and for some books, making one drink is a huge project. I look forward to working my way through more recipes. The text of book is fantastic as well. It gives a great account of the origins of tiki culture in the USA and how Smuggler's Cove came to be.

This is a beautiful book. I only got it today and just started reading it so this is a preliminary review but this is one of the best-looking, best-reading cocktail books I've picked up in a very long time. With photos and art on nearly every page, Martin Cate's writing is clear and entertaining. There are more than a hundred recipes throughout the chapters, along with well-written information about the history of the tiki culture; everything about rum and how it's made; making the drinks (extensive info here); setting up your own home bar and throwing a tiki party. This book is not only a delight to read but it would be an appropriate gift for the cocktail-lover in your life.

Everything you've ever wanted to know about tiki, tiki cocktails, and tiki bars, and more! Since leaving the SF Bay Area almost two years ago, I've missed the Smuggler's Cove drinks more than almost anything. Now I can make (most) of my favorites at home!! There are even recipes for all the house-made syrups they use. The surprise ingredient in the Mai Tai Simple Syrup is a revelation! This book should be required reading for anyone who considers themselves tiki enthusiasts or craft bartenders. As a rum enthusiast, I am especially appreciative of the rum categorization system Martin has devised. It makes finding the right rum for a cocktail so much easier and clears up a lot of the confusion created by the existing "light rum, gold rum, dark rum" categories that make no sense at all!Even if you never make a single drink from this book, the writing style and the stories are entertaining and informative enough to have at least one copy on your shelf (I have one at home and one at the office).

I've been developing a liking for tiki cocktails lately, and this book is poised to turn that affinity into a full-blown addiction. The writing is clear and well-thought-out. The recipes give you all of the information you need and a lot of fascinating history in addition. Not only is this book a wonderful guide to making some of the most interesting libations the 20th century had to offer, but it's also a historical record of where Polynesian Pop originated and proliferated, until its untimely demise in the 70s and 80s. This book comes to us at a time when Tiki is undergoing a revival. And it makes me want to be a part of that!Fun, informative, useful, and might just lead to a full-blown addiction. Or at least a new hobby.

Wow-what an amazing book. The sad part is that it is pushing me back into the world of the Tiki. Ok, maybe not a bad thing. The Cate's love for Tiki is clearly evident, and unlike a good fishing hole, they are willing to share all with whoever glances into these pages. I'm hooked. Just the info on rum was worth the price of the book...but there is much more including; well written sections on the history of the tiki culture, how to create your own tiki bar, throwing a tiki party, etc. All interspearsed with tons of great exotic drink recipes. I look forward to visiting their restaurant and plan to check out all the old and new tiki bars in between. Thanks Martin and Rebecca. Job well done.

Reclaiming the Fire: How Successful People Overcome Burnout, by Steven Berglas

Amazon.com Review

Why do so many seemingly successful professionals hit the wall in middle age, and decide to either radically scale back their careers or set off in an entirely new direction? Clinical psychologist Steven Berglas, a specialist in success-induced burnout, believes it stems from the "self-handicapping behavior" that baby boomers are exhibiting in record numbers as they climb the corporate ladder and find they aren't happy with what results. Terming the phenomena Supernova Burnout, Berglas defines this workplace ennui as "the constrictive effects of being branded a 'success'" and offers some advice for the psychological distress that is an increasing consequence. In Reclaiming the Fire, he advances his arguments in a serious but accessible manner with references to cultural touch points like Mark Monsky's Looking Out for #1 and help from philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. He analyzes "performance-inhibiting" behaviors ranging from substance abuse to abrupt career changes that he says developed from societal attitudes of the last half century, and suggests a few individual and organizational responses (including his 60 Minutes cure, which relies upon passion and intrinsic motivation to battle career malaise). While not everyone will agree with his assessments and prescribed cures, businesspeople who fit Berglas's description--and human resource managers who deal them--will likely find the material intriguing and potentially helpful. --Howard Rothman

From Publishers Weekly

Berglas, a management consultant and psychology instructor at UCLA and Harvard, traces burnout among attorneys, doctors, executives and others. For example, he points to Michael Jordan, who left basketball in 1993 because of "Supernova Burnout"; after extraordinary achievements, excessive attention made him fear failure, Berglas theorizes. Other cases of people trapped by success demonstrate burnout variations. Readers without their own professional guidance will wish Berglas discussed more solutions. Agent, Jill Kneerim. “Burnout” and “successful people” are not two words I had previously thought belonged in reference to the same people at the same point in time. When I first read the title of the book it really resonated with me and I was further convinced to read the book as I had heard great things about Dr. Berglas from the management teams of my companies who worked with him as their executive coach. I found the book to be intelligent, well-researched and innovative. The early chapters did a tremendous job outlining the root causes behind why otherwise successful people experienced mid-career burnout. And the latter chapters gave a very helpful framework to apply to one’s own personal situation to rejuvenate oneself and one’s career. I have implemented a lot of what I read in my own life and continue to refer Dr. Berglas to management teams where CEOs or other critical members suffer from similar dynamics. This is a must-read book – an outstanding return on the time invested.

I'm leaving Harvard with my second masters degree and I'm still searching for a purpose in life. A friend suggested I read Berglas' book, and while it it did not give me a formula for finding my "true calling," it was probably the only psychological tome I would call "gripping." I'm certain that I'll mull it over a while and be materially benefited for having absorbed all of what Berglas has to say. GREAT WORK!

I'm very glad that I bought this book because it has been very helpful to me and I look back at my copy often. I have not solved all of my particular burnout problems yet (no fault of the book's) but it helped me to identify my misery and malaise, how I got so deep into it (trying to please, trying to prove to my parents and myself that I'm worthy of living) and identifying the problems alone helped a great deal. Don't be put off by any claims that an academic or scientific tone is present or that any part of the book is difficult - this is a very helpful resource. You know you need this book when your most common feeling at work has become 1) wanting to throw everything out of a window, 2) wanting to throw a file at a coworker's head, or 3) answering all questions, comments or greetings with "F^%$ you" or "drop dead." Or when you start praying to be fired to just get the hell over with. When one or more of these is present, look to the burnout book for help....

Great for identifying causes of the problem and a description as to what the ultimate solution looks like. However, the book does very little in helping the reader identify those elements that would allow him or her to participate in the solution. A follow-up book would be great.

Short answer: Successful people overcome burnout by hiring Dr. Berglas. The author talks about several of his patients and how they did (or did not) overcome their problems. This is quite insightful, but the main message of this book seems to be a warning to people who believe that once they have achieved success everything will fall into place. According to Dr. Berglas, more often than not the opposite is true. After reading other reviews here, I expected more of an academic treatment of the topic, but it's far from that. For example, there is less than one references per page on average, and most of these aren't even to peer-reviewed papers and studies. And between the quotes from the ancient Greeks and Shakespeare, the tone tends to get a bit preachy.

Until reading this book, I never realized the limiting effects of success. If you're feeling entrapped or alone by your success, Reclaiming the Fire can help you find the spark that brings you back to life. Dr. Berglas' writing style pulls you in, makes you reflect, brings out buried emotions and will challenge your beliefs with real life examples backed by clinical evidence. Whether you're at your pinnacle or pursing it, this book is a must read for learning how to truly handle success.

I highly recommend this book! Dr. Berglas has a remarkable understanding of the human psyche -- he ( better than any other author I have read) completely and fully comprehends what drives/motivates us as well as the pitfalls in human nature and those present in our culture that can be defeating. I often felt as though he knew me personally and was speaking directly to me. Other friends of mine have made similar comments regarding Dr. Berglas. His insights are eye opening and make sense! He has an uncanny ability to grasp who we are and what we need. You will be glad you read this book!

This book was written before the 2007 financial meltdown and recession. Things are very different now, and I found many of the observations and advice to be of limited applicability or usefulness today.

Dr. Custis J. Bonk is gifted at helping teachers make their classrooms more engaging to their students. Anything wrote or suggested by this author would be worth buying and considering for classroom adoption.

Written very well

As a required textbook for higher learning, this made the course of study about online learning visible and well appreciated.

Everyone in the field of teaching online should have this book! I refer to it often. It's filled with many practical examples.

This was a recommended book for my MSN program. FULL of great ideas for helping students be successful in their educational endeavors!

A revolution is taking place in education. As more and more learning becomes web based, many educators are challenged to find ways to motivate, retain and promote the best models of learning for their students. In this excellent resource, Bonk and Zheng have compiled more than 100 activities that engage students in learning process. Spanning the range from low cost and low risk to high cost and high risk, these 100+ activities help students read, reflect, display and do (R2D2). Find a class ice-breaker or develop a case study for graduate students - this important treasury of information, activity and inspiration will help any educator improve the online experience for their students as well as themselves.

The author identifies and outlines strategies that reach different kinds of online learners. The basic classifications of auditory and verbal learner (visual-textual, reflective/observational learner, visual-display learner, and applied-doer learner cover most styles without stepping on the toes of different learning theory practitioners. The language used in the text is easy to understand, relate to and useful in discussing course design to management and staff that are not cognizant of learning theories.I have engaged in online courses in three major universities and without exception they exclusively served the verbal or visual-textual learners, and did not incorporate any "new" ideas in course delivery; even something as simple as podcasting. The online courses mirrored face to face courses and were simply dumping grounds for reading material, poorly mediated discussions and dysfunctional group projects. The online courses I engaged in mock the idea of 'a community of learning'. Curtis Bonk's work is the light showing the way out of the narrow mindless dungeons of higher academe. The R2D2 theory is not instructional design, but it should be an important element.

Lots of predictable stuff you already know Lots of colleges like it I did not

I'm not a child therapist or student of child development. I was looking for something with a little more meat than what's found in most parenting books, and this book delivered. I can understand almost everything and it offers terrific breakdowns of different areas of development at each stage, with quick snapshots. I'll be using the book frequently in the future when I have questions, concerns, or curiosities about my children's path to adulthood!

I brought this textbook as a requirement for one of my classes. The book is easy to read, comprehend and understand. It's one of those books that you don't need your professor to decipher for you. The text is factual and has good examples to help one understand the readings better. To my surprise I actually enjoy reading it.

I got this book as a required textbook for my class in a PhD program. The book has excellent case examples for each chapter (so far). The authors do a good job of integrating practice into an understanding of theoretical issues. I have had child development classes before, but I feel like I have a better understanding of child development with my current class and this textbook. The one criticism I have is that some of the literature mentioned in the book seems a little dated. All in all, a good book to begin a comprehensive understanding of child development and the issues to look out for at each stage. Incorporating practice with theoretical issues adds an extra dimension to the book.

I read this for a class in ocial work and wished I'd read it sooner. Great explanations and information, so helpful for a new parent or a clinician working with children or teens.

Excellent text arrived on time great for my course has helped me a great deal in writing papers

Easy to read, practical and informative. I especially appreciate the abundance of case examples, and the author's overarching attitude toward practice with children.

Excellent fast shipping.

Love this book! Only halfway through right now but it's a great read with a lot of psychoeducational material. Great for new practitioners! Love the case examples they offer a great vantage point for a new clinician.

Very quick read. Also very generic. Quickly turned into an advertisement for the author's rehab center and his other books. Here's the jist: Everything happens for a reason, just go with it, it could be a blessing in disguise. Not a bad message, but not at all what I expected. Not very Zen at all.

Firstly, this book is not about zen. I have studied Zen, eastern religion, and eastern metaphysics for years and this book misses the mark almost entirely.Zen is not about labels, striving for happiness and avoiding sadness, It's not about using belief as a superpower. There are several problems with this book, which I stopped reading after some 70 pages.1. The idea that there is a seperate 'you' that can create thoughts and emotions and actions ex-nihilo, that can simply choose to be happy. Eastern religion is about recognizing the illusory nature of the self, and the deepest self being the 'whole works', not granting it godhood. The man goes on to state that there is no seperation in any of it, then goes on to state there there is a seperate 'you' acting as some sort of minature first cause.2. The idea that we are free to choose our emotions. Your emotions are happenings, just like your thoughts are. If we were free to choose our emotions, noone would choose to be sad or angry.3. The idea that if you 'wish for' and 'believe in' something that the universe will manifest it for you. This is "the secret". It's newage wishful thinking magic, and it is NOT zen.4. The idea that everything that happens is good, is conflated with the idea that everything that happens is harmonious. His examples of bad things magically becoming good things involve rediculous outcomes, like the construction next door is actually a gift house for you, or you can get hit on the head by a rock and suddenly understand old obscure buddhist texts like the I Ching.5. His endorsement of wholy' disproven medical interventions like acupuncture.6. His blatant advertisement of his addiction center.7. His idea that belief is powerful is a good idea. The problem is that we don't choose our beliefs. We do not choose what we are and are not convinced of. You can choose to ACT as if you believe something, and you can choose to PROFESS a belief in something, but if you believe it or not is not a choice.8. The idea that the universe is based on continuation, and will always continue, and will always do what is neccessary to continue. The Second Law of thermodynmics, known as the law of entropy states exactly the opposite.9. The idea that there are "laws of nature" that somehow exist and act as cosmic traffic cops somewhere out in the aether, is not even an eastern idea. That's completely western. The illusory nature of abstractions is not the super-realism of abstractions. Between the self illusion and this, he's completely misunderstood eastern metaphysics.10. His conflation of metaphysics with supernatural.11. I've run out of counter points, but Im sure there are more, because I only got about halfway through the book. If I had finished the book, this would be too long. I have taken a permanant maker and made a new title subtitle for it, "The secret" 'manifesting your reality through wishful thinking, with non-relevant zen quotes.'If you are really interested in a self-improvement book based in an eastern worldview, I recommend 'the wisdom of insecurity' by alan watts. This half-baked book doesnt hold half a candle to it.I didn't even mean to buy this book, I was trying to buy Zen and the art of motorcycle maintainance, which is also much much better.

I loved this book! Its small, big print easy to read but gets straight to the point. It just basically explains and helps you understand that NOTHING in the universe is a mistake, and that things happen for a reason. Even though things might be tough at the moment be patient because things are often blessings in disguise.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. If you are someone going through any stressful events in life this book can be a great first step in a direction where you have a more positive out look on how to handle the grind of life. I've read and re-read this book twice now. Marking out things I've found important to myself personally and helpful to others. Overall an amazing read. Always recommend

I enjoyed reading this book and found a lot of the ideas interesting. Some of the good ideas can be put to use to increase your happiness and make you a more optimistic person. You have to take some of the advice with a grain of salt. Some of his philosophy doesn't make sense to me or he doesn't explain why things are connected and these come off as giant assumptions with no basis. It's also a very literal.Pros:* Look for the good in everything, if you don't see good then have faith that it will benefit you later or in some way you don't understand.* We can control our happiness and how we respond to events.* There is a brief, but interesting scientific explanation about how being in a good mood makes it easier to be in a good mood.* Problems should be viewed as challenges that we can 'workout' with to strengthen ourselves and grow our wisdom.* Stress and anxiety come from imagining a bad outcome and we don't need to do this.Cons:* The author says the main reason every moment is to our benefit is because the universe wants to continue and we are apart of it, so it wants us to benefit.* He speaks very literally and in absolutes. Every event benefits us. Some events seem to not have any benefit. Now just because something doesn't benefit to you doesn't mean you should react in a negative way, but some things are neutral or bad. For example, if I spill a drink on the carpet, I don't think this has some hidden benefit in the future. Should it cause me to be unhappy? No, but we don't have to 'pretend' it has a benefit.* Title is misleading - there are small references to Zen, but the author seems to pull most of his philosophy from I Ching, which is an ancient chinese book, as well as a lot of other sources. And some of it it may just be his personal opinion.* If you follow his philosophy, you'll start to have better luck/fate/fortunate. This has to do with the universe 'giving' you good things because it likes your attitude. He makes it seem like you have control over external factors, you don't and this is one of the big things where his philosophy actually conflicts with Buddhist teachings. We don't control things like the weather. You do have complete control over yourself and how you respond to events and how you perceive your reality. With these things, even though you don't have control over what happens, you can have control over your happiness. And the author does touch on this as well.* Some of his philosophy is not in line with Buddhist beliefs. It's not about trying to be happy every moment, but experiencing everything as-is, rather not rejecting or grasping.Remarks:What he calls The Universe he notes some people refer to as God or something else. This is interesting and depending your belief system, you can align what he says with your own beliefs. In this sense, this book can be extremely useful to people of many different religions. The message could become "Have faith in God and trust in his will. Trust that he loves you and wants what is best for you in the end". A lot of people may find this more useful then his term "The Universe".Regarding most of the Cons listed above, if you don't take what he says so literally, I think there is great potential for anyone to apply the ideas, become happier, and have a more positive attitude.

This book had a huge impact on me. Sometimes it comes across as slightly advertising Chris's rehabilitation clinic, but if you ignore that and into his real messages, it is very meaningful. I have since read another book on Happiness that I absolutely love (author is Matthieu Ricard), and I noticed that many points were equivalent between the two books. I find that you have to go into reading this type of book with the understanding that you may not understand how the ways of thinking that are presented can be done in reality, but you have to try and continue to push to change how your mind processes the events and situations in daily life. The top take-away for me from the book was that no particular situation or occurrence is good or bad; it depends on how you interpret and respond to it.
