Some books on polymer clay are timeless regardless of the dated trends it reflects in the projects. This is NOT that book. On one hand- you have good solid techniques that will never go out of style. On the other, the execution and examples of those techniques used in the book are extremely lackluster. I can look at that- and think, yay- non-intimidating results to aim for, on the other hand, it's not very inspiring at all. I honestly could have done without this book. The only remotely helpful technique is the way they construct the channel threaded bracelet. But the book is supposed to be about surface design. I feel like this book started out with a lot of promise, and then as you go through it- it feels like they gave up even trying to make things interesting. If you get this for 99 cents w/ free shipping- go for it... maybe... but otherwise, not worth the paper it's printed on.

I just purchased this as a used book and I'm very glad I didn't pay full price for it. It arrived yesterday and I'm donating this book to the library today. I see no use for it in my PC reference shelves (loaded with dozens of books on the subject). This isn't a keeper. The "how to" information was limited as far as showing things step-by-step. I thought the explainations were poorly explained. Photographs were not particularly well-done, either. Most of the surface techniques shown, honestly, look like things created by pre-schoolers (fingerpainting, first attempts at rubber stamping, that type of thing). Now, if abstract "designs" are what you are looking for, than maybe this book is for you. So many of the techniques resulted in finishes that looked the same. The gallery of completed pieces was not terribly inspiring, compared with many of the other PC books on the market.Save your money and stick with a Donna Kato book or buy "The Masters" to see what truly wonderful finishes can be constructed on PC.

I am really enjoying this book if for no more than seeing all the ways in which surface designs can enhance my polymer clay projects. It is clearly written and the illustrations are good. There are some good ideas here for future projects. It validates my own thinking about surface design and it challenges me to learn new techniques. That is about as good as any how to book can be in my estimation. I am glad that I purchased it.

I wasn't inspired at all by this book, even at the cheap price. I paid more for the shipping than the book.

Living in a very rural area must depend on books & internet to self-teach myself the ins & outs of PC. Most of the surface techniques are rather uninspiring. Like another reviewer stated, the many techniques/projects were almost childish in nature even for someone just starting out in polymer clay. If you're looking for a creme de la creme surface design book may I suggest Marie Segal's "The Polymer Clay Artist's Guide: A Directory of Mixes, Colors, Textures.

All I can say is Wow! OK, I will say a little more... this is a great book with some really interesting ideas on using different types of surface designs on the clay, including air brushing! I think this book is a great addition to my collection and I will certainly be using the techniques and making some of the projects .

This book was recommended by Donna Kato, one of the doyennes of the polymer clay design field. Ellen Marshall has experimented with innumerable combinations of materials applicable to polymer clay design. Specific projects are listed and instructions are clear and easily followed, but the book's real challenge is in assimilating and building on all the information the author provides. While it focuses on polymer clay applications, it can easily provide inspiration for visual artists working in any number of various media.

Wow! So many ideas

Lots of detail and well researched as far as I can tell. I was in the navy so the authors account probably is more easily understood by me on a couple of levels. Even so, the scale of this series of engagements is huge and the average reader will have a hard time keeping things straight in their minds as it unfolds. There are some diagrams of the battle and they help a bit but it would have been better for me if they were divided into smaller pieces so I could print them out and arrange them for a clearer understanding. The author undoubtedly knows the story as the back of his hand, but for the rest of us trying to keep the scores of names, unit designators and locations straight is a challenge, and after a while I gave up caring about taking away a solid understanding and settled for getting the gist of the thing. So I may not be able to fault his facts I sure fault the story telling. Reminded me of a dense college text.

The Battle for Leyte Gulf is an excellent descriptive account of the actions of both the Japanese and the US Navy in late October 1944. It begins by setting the stage—information about the two fleets, their leadership and their strategies. Some will say there's too much detail but in a seminal book like this that detail is the point. Don't expect much character development as the main players are portrayed through their commands, actions and reactions. This is the most comprehensive account of the Battle for Leyte Gulf I've read. Required reading for WWII Pacific theater buffs.

A detailed history of the largest naval battle of WW2, covered from the very beginning (sub attacks on the main Japanese column) to hunting down stragglers and cripples long after the main battle was over. Reads like an after action report, which was one of Woodward's main sources of information. Every shell hit and torpedo is recorded. Originally written in 1947, the currency provides unparalleled detail - but maybe also some myopia. Japanese failings are drilled repeatedly for rationale, but scrutinizing Halsey's reckless acts is"left for another time".The maps are terrible, looking like bad reprints of the 1947 originals. All black and white with movement arrows fifty miles wide and obscuring everything. The original book itself may have been larger, allowing map details that this version compression obliterates. A shame, as maps are critical particularly sea battles'.

The level of detail in this book is excellent. It is well written, but required me to read some parts for a second time, just to make sure I understood it. That is not the fault of the author, for this was the largest battle of the war. It stretched out over three days and hundreds of miles of complicated territory. The information gathered from the Japanese commanders really helped in understanding why they acted in ways which seemed puzzling at the time. All in all, a good detailed description of a very complex and strategic battle.

I probably would not have read this book had I know it was basically a timeline description of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. It was impossible for someone like me to keep all the ships with their skippers and groups of ships on both sides clear in my mind and where they were and were headed. I was a bit shocked that Admiral Halsey's decision to follow Japanese ships north instead completing the task he was assigned, was not explored more. I thought there would be stories of individual acts on both sides but there was not. I much prefer the wonderful book 'The last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors' which really kept my interest. I finished this book and did enjoy it but it was more of a 'first they did this and then they went there and then', kind of book. No real stories. I'm sure for people studying this battle it was excellent but not for me.

An early and rather technical account of the naval engagements in the last big sea battle between the Japanese and American navies in World War II. It was written just after the war, when surviving Japanese officers had been interrogated and most of the facts were in, but may not include data that have come to light since that time. It's rather dry reading, but certainly important to those interested in the Pacific Theater.

My dad was a WW II combat vet, I later served and then taught US History for 32 years. I enjoyed the book, but a few caveats. To begin with, you really need a big map of the Leyte Gulf area., and then a map of the entire battle as you read. This was actually 4 separate battles that took place in4 separate areas. Also, the military nomenclature for commands, ships and planes can prove difficult. CVW is an Old School "get it right" author with lots of derail and reserved analysis. It should also be pointed out that this was published in 1947, which means that newer books will have information not available at the time. As I said, I enjoyed the book, but it would have helped readers if the editors had provided maps for each chapter. If they can find it, reading James Jone's WW II would be a good beginning to understand the entire Pacific war. Finally, Leyte Gulf was the first use of kamikaze attacks, and I would suggest the THE TWILIGHT WARRIORS , which details our response to the kamikaze threat.as a follow-up read. Also, THE LAST STAND OF THE TIN CAN SAILORS will explain why we were able to win after making serious errors at the beginning of the battles.

Book was very good at chronicaling the complex battles in this historic event. It pointed to the leaders that failed in their responsibilities without being accusatory. In other words let the narrative of the events speak for itself. Gave a much better understanding of Japan and USA at this stage of the war in their approach to this battle. The book could have added much more to the story with more detailed accounts of individual ship actions in the various engagement between the ships, aircraft, submarines etc. but then the book would have more than doubled in size. It would have been worth it and would have gotten 5 stars

It's rare that I get so engrossed in a book that I read it all in one sitting, and rarer still for a nonfiction book to do that to me. Yet the pithy, self-deprecating humor in here made me drop everything else for a few hours. I don't generally like political books, but this was fascinating in its perspective - not rehashing every moment of the Obama era but using anecdotes of specific events and then showing how things had evolved to today. The ongoing discussion of the influence of the Internet and then the references to things like Blackberrys and the angst over getting Twitter accounts was a reminder of how quickly things have changed in our world. Even the way the book was put together drew you in, with short chapters and the use of bold face and bullet points in section headings. P.S. The footnotes were hilarious! I wish there were more of them.

Reads like a friendly conversation, sort of like sitting at Pfeiffer’s kitchen table and listening to him offer his perspective on the last decade of his life. Offers personal anecdotes of the Obama presidency that will have you laughing, reminiscing, nostalgic, and hopeful. (The footnotes have my heart)

I've always loved Dan Pfeiffer's mix of humor and analysis on Pod Save America. YES WE (STILL) CAN is the best version of that charm and political thought. This book offers some hilarious (and telling) stories about Dan's time in the White House and what a great boss he had in President Obama, but the book always comes back to a lesson that is relevant to the current tire fire which is the Trump administration. And the cover has Obama dunking on Trump -- you gotta love that!

Hilarious. Inspirational. I thought about calling out sick from work just so I could finish it. Dan offers a unique look into the Obama years, peppered with inspiration, a call more political involvement, and footnotes that are bound to make you laugh. Highly recommend to everyone

Full disclosure: I am a huge Pod Save fan. I was super-excited to read this book, and it did not disappoint. Pfeiffer’s transparency with his mistakes and his triumphs makes for good reading, and the book lays out How We Got Here in a very compelling way. Strangely enough, it also left me with hope. While heinous Republicans may be calling the shots for now, America still has more good people than bad, and we did once elect a good, kind, and intelligent person President. As Obama famously said to Congress after they actually passed a law, “Wasn’t that fun? Let’s do it again!”

So well written, I nearly cried at the end of the last three chapters. I read about a book a month and this is easily my favorite book of the past three years.Dan has hit the absolute perfect balance of storytelling, catharsis, hope and humor. The whole way through, I felt like I had just won an argument with an enemy and gotten high-fives and hugs from all the smartest onlookers. And the footnotes on each page? Super-hilarious.I thoroughly enjoyed the mild snarkiness, but the book is so much more than that. It's an unvarnished inside look into the 2008 campaign, the rigorous eight years of high-stress governing, and the strange election of 2016. Dan's observations are consistently astute and entertaining. If you voted for Barack or like Pod Save America even a little bit, you do not want to miss this!

I was super excited to get a copy of DanPfeifer’s book Yes We (Still) Can: Politics in the Age of Obama, Twitter, and Trump from Twelve Books and NetGalley in return for my honest review. If you know and love Crooked Media and Pod Save America, as I do, you will love this book. If you aren’t familiar with them/him, and you enjoy stories by political insiders, you will love this book. If you are a fan of the 45th President, you probably won’t like it or him/them.Dan Pfeiffer was President Obama's communications director and he currently co-hosts the insanely popular podcast Pod Save America with Jon Favreau, who became Obama’s chief speechwriter despite being in his mid-twenties. These guys have a combination of political savvy and millenial viewpoint that are a refreshing change from the tomes that are churned by the “same old political hacks,”as my friend calls them. After the disastrous (from his – and my—point of view) election of 2016, Pfeiffer was stunned and disheartened, because he had spent years working for Obama, and wasn’t quite prepared for the new Administration. He decided to write about the way politics had changed since Obama’s election in 2008, the role of social media and changing communication methods and styles impacted elections, and how we could keep from going crazy as we try to right the ship.My favorite things about this book, aside from his wicked sense of humor, is the way he works hard to explain why everyone (including him!) got it wrong in 2016, and his advice to Democrats about where we can go from here. This is perfect for people who miss Obama and are appalled/disturbed/frightened by the new President. Four stars.

Our current political reality is a hard pill to swallow, but Dan Pfeiffer at least gives a really funny and digestible personal account of how we got here. The book is motivating and inspiring, and chock-full of fun anecdotes that attest to the brilliance and integrity of Obama and his team. The observations on the (d)evolution of media in the past decade are canny and illuminating, also extremely depressing and worrisome. How can progressive activism best be paired with savvy communications to rise above the overflowing sewer of fake news and right-wing propaganda? While there are no easy solutions, it's at least encouraging to have an insider's view of the landscape and opportunities for change.Do you love reading smart-a**, caustic takedowns of the shameful swarm of low-rent racists and criminals leading the GOP?Are you an energetic progressive in need of validation and peer support for your ceaseless activism and packed protest schedule?Do you love to laugh while secretly crying inside and seething at the tragedy of modern American politics?Read this book!
