As always, Brueggemann offers the reader an insightful and thought-provoking investigation of Christian hymnody. His exquisite interpretation of scripture is brought to bear on considering the "why" behind worship singing. It is a marvelous resource for both academic and congregational contexts. Once again, Brueggemann teaches all who have ears to hear.

I'm giving this only two stars because 1, Brueggemann bows down to false liberal and unbelieving theologians who form their beliefs based on false and unjustified presuppositions. 2. This book was really boring. I have read his books before, and they were fine, but there is something about this book that made it extremely hard to get through. Apart from that, if you can handle the boring aspect of it, Brueggemann has lots of gold nuggets to provide in regards to the psalms and hessed.

The photos and descriptions of each bird are so clear and accurate that I'm able to sit on my deck near my bird feeders and figure out exactly which birds are coming to my yard. It's also informative when hiking in the mountains or at the beach; I'm actually able to tell friends the names of almost every bird we see. The color-coded sectioning makes for quick referencing which is helpful since the birds never seemed to hang around long enough for me to page through my previous bird book which was arranged alphabetically!

I love this series of books. This is the second one I've purchased (bought one previously for another state where I was living at the time). They're great for beginning birders because they're color coded and use actual photographs, so it's easy to find and recognize your bird. Most other bird guides are organized by species, so you have to already know what kind of bird you're looking at in order to figure out what kind of bird you're looking at - how does that make sense? It also narrows down the choices to the birds you're most likely to see.Now that I know more about birds, I have started using other books and online resources, but I still keep this book around because it's small and light enough you can take it with you on walks and hikes.One small issue with the Washington version of this guide is if you're in the Puget Sound area, the range map is very small and squiggly there, so it's difficult to see your specific area, but it usually doesn't make much of a difference.

GREA BOOK! I have feeders in my front & back yards. I'm stuck in my house due to health issues and watch the birds from my windows. I love to see what kind of birds are coming and like to find out what they are and details about them. This book is an easy size & weight to handle and/or carry around; the pictures of birds are WONDERFUL and love seeing details I can't always see on the real bird; the layout of the book is also really nice. The picture is on one page and directly opposite are the details, so very convenient to look back and forth - no annoying page turning back and forth.I highly recommend this book to 'backyard' bird watchers who want quick info about the birds coming to their feeders. "Stan's Notes" that are at the bottom of the info page are always short, to the point and give nice details about the song of the bird and a few of their habits.I also love the cover - the bright yellow cover makes it easy to spot when I'm looking for it!

A really wonderful book! Lots of pictures of male/female/color possibilities, all on the same page! Good maps showing where bird is found at different times of the year, and good descriptions of habitat and habits. Sturdy construction and heavy pages ensure it will last a long time under rough conditions! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in our local birds.

Great book for a beginner like myself. Color divided so it's easy to flip to what you're looking at. I have come across 2 that I've been able to identify that are not in this book. This paired up with the cornell Merlin bird app is a killer combo for easier identification. This is a handy size and usually I can get it to stay in my pocket.

I don't really know anything about what a good or bad bird book looks like, but here goes... Kudos for the pretty, detailed pictures. I have do have one specific complaint which is as follows: I live in the Olympic Peninsula beyond Port Angeles and have been interested in the plight (choose your word based on your personal stance) of the "old-growth" forests. A central figure in the relatively recent history (~50 years) of that subject is the "spotted owl." One of the primary reasons I bought this book was to be able to identify that species and expected that a book of this title would be about perfect. Please imagine my dismay when I discovered that it is not included. I can only ask, "Why not?"

We have owned a copy of this book for several years. Our copy sits next to the kitchen window for handy look-ups when a new bird hops by. It is tossed into the car anytime we are heading out. This copy was a gift to a 10 year old who loves it. The big plus for us is the way it is arranged--by the colors of birds. Anyone can recognize "yellow birds" and go directly to that section. We considered another book--one on just Willamette Valley birds--but it was organized by bird types. Amateurs, especially young amateurs, may not know "hawks" as they begin looking at birds. With Birds of Oregon, learning the types of birds will happen with time and use, but that is not a prerequisite to finding and identifying that bird you see NOW!great book. small enough to carry with you and easy enough to actually use!

Pretty good layout. I find it's a little challenging to find certain birds based on the color recognition. Overall, it is average to good.

Now I can look up all the birds that hit my feeders. Before they were just pretty, funny birds now I can name them when I see them.Friends are impressed when I can tell them the names of each bird.

As others have noted, it IS a quiet book, but my children (3rd grade, 2nd grade, and pre-K) enjoyed it very much (although my 3rd grader, looking over my shoulder, said it was just 3 stars because he isn't that interested in planes - ahem).Anyway, I used this book as part of a short aviation unit study this summer after we came back from Nags Head - we studied the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, and Louis Bleriot.I absolutely love the illustrations in this book, the author uses a fairly muted palate, and we used butcher paper, various brown paints, and white paint applied with sponges and cotton balls to make our own plane-lost-in-the-clouds picture.We also used the book to discuss persistence & passion (the Wright Brothers made 3 trips to Kitty Hawk before they were successful, but Louis Bleriot had - if memory serves me correctly, which admittedly it hasn't been doing lately - 8 or 9 "failures" before he was successful building his plane). We also discussed France, being an inventor, the English Channel & the Chunnel, and Roman Numbers.I think the beautiful illustrations, combined with the book's encouraging and REAL LIFE message of learning from your mistakes and not giving up when you are trying to achieve your dreams, makes this book a worthwhile addition to any child's library. As the mother of a somewhat perfectionist daughter, I can't have too many books like this on my bookshelf.

We loved this book. We looked up all of the places grandpa went together. Great for homeschooling moms.

Engaging story. Pages were still connected at the top... like the printing didn't cut the tops off enough so the paper looped together. I cut it with scissors, but it was odd!

I first read this book when I was 6 years old and never stopped thinking about flying. Today I now have a commercial pilot license and over 300 hours of flight time. If you want the next generation to fall in love with aviation this I absolutely recommend.

THis is a wonderful book for children that adults will love to read to them and learn something in the process. It tells the true story of the first flight across the English Channel by Frenchman Louis Bleriot ( a European contemporary and competitor of the Wright brothers) in an aircraft that he designed and built. THe illustrations are wonderful and the story will keep young children spellbound. A great book for a child's or grandparent's library.

Get book, beautiful illustrations. It came with the dust jacket torn. I am not pleased.

Historically significant with simple to understand language for a preschooler through beginning reader.

A wonderful picture book. Very underrated. The moment where the pilot is alone in the clouds is a sublime page. The illustrations are great.

This is a fascinating read for anyone who ever wondered what marriage and interpersonal relationships in the western world looked like 100, 200, 300 years ago. We tend to operate under the assumption that the institution has always served pretty much the same purposes it does today, but Coontz's book shows that nothing could be further from the truth. Marriage, in fact, has served so many varied economic, cultural, political and personal purposes over the centuries that it makes one wonder why people today get so worked up over gay marriage and other changes which continue to reflect the changing mores of western culture. That said, the first half of the book is a bit of a slog; the author giving far too many examples of little known historical characters and the oddities of their marriages. It picks up in the second half (I'm just now getting into that part) where she talks about changes brought about in the early 20th century by the industrial revolution and heightened expectations on the part of women at the end of the Victorian era. This part of the book is just easier to relate to by someone born mid-century like myself.

I read a quote from this book that someone posted on social media in response to the normal clamor about "traditional marriage." I was immediately in awe of this author, so much in awe in fact that I bought the book immediately and spent the next several days reading it. Coontz is an excellent writer and her research is exhaustive. This may be a non-fiction book, and I'm going to guess is used as a textbook in some courses, but it reads almost like a novel. I learned things about marriage -- its roots, function and current influences on modern-day relationships that I'd never heard of in my entire undergraduate and graduate careers! This is a must read book for anyone who is ever tempted to utter the words "traditional marriage" (or for anyone who is tempted to respond to such utterances). You may not like what you read, but truth is truth...and an interesting truth (about the history of marriage) it is. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Wow what a great book. I usually don't write much reviews for books or items that I buy on amazon but this book definitely warrants one. After reading this book I am absolutely blown away what I had learned and read. Stephanie Coontz has devoted her life to research of society and additionally spent over a decade researching marriage alone. I was shocked to learn that marrying for love, let alone as the primary reason, was a relatively new idea in human society. If you really want to understand what marriage was and what marriage is today then this book will give you the understanding. She clearly states that she's not in the business to project where marriage is going in the future. Also, the author definitely is NOT giving marriage advice. She states from beginning that as a historian her goal and profession, like her fellow historians, is to see where marriage was in the earliest of times to where we are now.As man in modern society again I am humbled to what I have learned and I sparked interest in friends and family into reading this book. The men and women I told about this book have different political, religious and culture backgrounds. To me that's saying enough about this book to grant that type of respect. Thank you Stephanie Coontz for devoting your time and energy into your career and into writing this book. Your book has definitely changed my attitude and understanding into the deep significance of marriage over the many, many years.

A history of how marriage has changed over the course of civilization, from a business or political partnership to the modern quest for a soulmate, this book introduces ideas I view as relevant to my own life and times. Coontz addresses questions such as how contraception and legal rights for illegitimate offspring changed marriage and why among poor people marriage is declining while birth rates are on the rise. I find Coontz's writing to be clear, easy to read, and thankfully devoid of fluff. Fully 40% of this book are her notes and references.Contents:Antiquity:Reasons to marry:Political (for elites): "Marriage spoke to the needs of the larger group. It converted strangers into relatives... Marriage had become the way most wealth and land changed hands... also the main vehicle by which leading families expanded their social networks and political influence... sealed military alliances and peace treaties. Elites jockeyed to acquire powerful in-laws... Only very recently have parents and other relatives ceased to have substantial material stakes in whether individuals get or stay married."Social: Not ok to have illegitimate kids, not marrying seen as immoral or perverse.Economical: "Marriage became a way through which elites could hoard or accumulate resources... The dowry a wife brought with her at marriage was often the biggest infusion of cash, goods, or land a man would ever acquire."For non-elites: "Farms or businesses could rarely be run by just a single person... Most people had a two-person, married-couple career that neither could conduct alone." Homemakers, now cut off from the sphere of the cash economy, became more dependent on their husbands financially... While the new division of labor stripped many women of their identities as economic producers and family co-providers, it also freed them from the strict hierarchy that had governed the old household workplace... shifted the basis of marriage from sharing tasks to sharing feelings. The older view that wives and husbands were work mates gave way to the idea that they were soul mates... Many men and women came to believe that wives should remain at home, not because men had the right to dominate them, but because home was a sanctuary in which women could be sheltered... The new theory of gender difference divided humanity into two distinct sets of traits. The male sphere encompassed the rational and active ideal, while females represented the humanitarian and compassionate aspects of life. Women had long been urged to hold men's 'baser instincts' in check... 'sex appeal' replaced submission as a wife's first responsibility to her husband. In the nineteenth century, most Europeans and Americans came to accept a new view of husbands as providers and of women as nurturing home-bodies. Only in the mid-twentieth century, however, could a majority of families in Western Europe and North America actually survive on the earnings of a single breadwinner."Golden age of marriage:"Policy makers recognized that single male workers and all female workers were being overtaxed to support married couples. But this was seen as a good thing because it increased a man's incentive to marry and decreased his wife's incentive to take paid work... As people married younger, life spans lengthened, and divorce rates fell or held steady, individuals were spending much more of their lives in marriage than ever before or since... Marriage provided the context for just about every piece of most peoples' lives. .. No longer did people postpone marriage until they could establish their economic independence, as had been the case for the middle classes in Western Europe and North America up to the late nineteenth century. Nor was marriage, as had been the case in so many peasant villages, something you entered only after a woman had gotten pregnant and showed that she could produce children to work on the family farm. Certainly it was not something you entered to set a joint business enterprise, as had been the case for many craftsmen and artisans in the past. Nor was it an informal arrangement scarcely distinguishable from just living together, as it had been among many lower- class individuals of earlier days, of whom their neighbors often said they were 'married, but not churched.' Marriage of the long decade of the 1950s was simply the be-all and end-all of life. The fact that individuals now lead productive lives outside marriage means that partners need to be more "intentional" than in the past about finding reasons and rituals to help them stay together....A woman who marries a man with few job prospects may end up having to support him as well as their children... The Shaker Story by Flo Morse may not be a large book, but it provides a wealth of information about this little known and oft misunderstood religious group. Some people confuse them with Quakers. Others think they were simply manufacturers of furniture. Morse sets out to fill in the gaps.The Shakers were founded in 1772 and thrived into the 1800's. They believed that you didn't have to die to enter heaven. Rather, heaven could be found right here on earth if you lived a simple and virtuous life. Shakers were required to live in villages, where they were totally self-sufficient. Couples had to disavow marriage vows, and men, women and children lived apart from each other. They did interact during worship where they sang and danced (or "shaked"). They produced seeds, herbs, hats, cloth, thread, brooms and furniture, and sold these items all over the country. The Shakers were also prolific songwriters, and they composed over 30,000 hymns and songs. Music was an important component of their worship. Only one of their songs, A Simple Gift, has gone mainstream. Aaron Copland included it as the main melody in his well-known classic, Appalachian Spring.You might wonder what would entice adults to live a celibate life. But this was often more appealing to women-rather than marrying an abusive or undependable husband. Women had an equal say in village life, and some villages even welcomed blacks as equals. Many unwanted children were dropped off at Shaker Villages, where they were raised to adulthood.The Shakers started to fade after the Civil War for a variety of reasons. First, factories started mass-producing the same products the Shakers made by hand, but for a fraction of the cost. Since members didn't procreate, new generations were not born to replace older generations as they died off. And public orphanages meant less unwanted children coming to Shaker Villages. One by one, the villages were dissolved and closed. Several have become National Historic Sites, and it is fascinating to see how Shakers lived, worked and worshipped. Still, there are a handful of Shakers in the United States (less than a dozen at last count), although the Shaker glory days appear to be over.So, if you can't visit a Shaker Village (such as Pleasant Valley Shaker Village in Kentucky), pick up Morse's book. She provides a good look at this fascinating group.

Their faith spread out mostly in the Eastern United States with several communities. They did not believe in marriage and took in orphans to raise. B/W drawings appear of their worship and their beliefs are explained.With the Industrial Revolution their ranks shrink to just a few that are left. Includes a map of where their settlements were located and the years they were active. Insightful.

This is a truly awesome double maze/coloring book! It's great on both counts. I'd play with these all day if I didn't set a timer. I do the mazes in light pencil and erase before coloring. You can also white out the "start" and "finish" indicators, although they're discreet and in an attractive font. The pages are printed on one side only, so you can use almost any coloring medium (though some may bleed; test first on answer or print pages) with a backing sheet to protect the next image. Kudos to Marty Noble, who is not only productive, but creative and talented!

So I love the designs and wanted to buy more books but not sure if I can do. A major oversight by an editor in that #38 is not in the book and #'s 47&48 are repeats (by looking at the maze solutions in the back is how I figured out that #38 is missing). This is a big oopsie by Racehorse Publishing to put out a defective book like this -- anyone see the movie Elf? So disappointed eve though I love Marty Noble's work

I've had problems with my lower back for 43 years. Originally diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, my back has worsened over time. I re-injured it a a couple of weeks ago, backpacking in the woods I experienced spasms. This time, the pain radiated into my hips, laterally along my lower back, into my butt. I found that McKenzie Method was not helping this time, although in the past it has. But this instance felt different, and the pain felt more like sciatica, and most of the pain was "de-centralized", and not "centralized" over the spine.After 10 days with no relief, I started doing Pete Egoscue's "Pain Free" exercises ("Treating the Herniated Disk" on page 119), and found immediate relief. After doing the Egoscue exercises for three days, my back is improving. Not healed or pain free, but I feel like I am on the road to recovery.I found the primary difference between McKenzie and Egoscue is McKenzie focuses solely on the lower back, while Egoscue treats the entire body, lower back, hips, thighs, even upper back and lower legs.To be clear, I have often been helped by the McKenzie book, expecially when the pain is primarily in my lower back. But based on my experience, McKenzie is not the total solution. Pete Egoscue describes in great detail how various sections of the body are linked, from head to feet. I reommend trying "Pain Free" if McKenzie alone, is not helping.

I had two months of physical therapy for herniated and bulging discs in my lumbar spine, and the treatment I paid big bucks for is pretty much the same treatment that is laid out in this $10 book. (A PT friend of mine recommended this book and confirmed for me that the premise of her schooling on lower-back pain was the exercises in this book!) If you haven't gotten imaging done or haven't made the leap to get therapy yet, give this book a try. If nothing else, it will give you and indication of where your physical therapist will start.

My long standing sciatic problem flared up earlier this year. Had trouble walking and so much pain I could barely sleep. Went to physical therapy, which didn't help much. However, saw this book on the therapist's desk and asked about it. Bought it and it's working as advertised. My pain is greatly diminished and I walk normally. If your L5/S1 and/or L4/L5 discs are bulging, you can actually reverse it and suck the discs back into place. The pain moves back up your legs, from feet to calves to thighs to buttocks and towards your spine. You can actually relieve the pressure on the nerve, which stops sending pain down your body. I have had pain off and on for 50 years, and nothing worked like this.Now I do a brief set of exercises each morning and, since I sit at work most of the day, get up every hour for a brief set of back bends and squats. I also use lumbar pillows at home, work, and while driving.If you have pressed material entirely out of the discs, this isn't for you. If the discs in your lower back are bulging, however, this can work like magic.

Be careful.While the McKenzie Press-up is a tried and true technique in the treatment of back pain and back injury, this book can be dangerous to someone who is not doing the techniques under the supervision of a Physical Therapist. I've been living with a severe lower back injury for the last 5 years, and I've been to many different doctors and PTs. My injury can be debilitating at times, and has without question been the bane of my existence for a really long time. I've been forced out of teaching and practicing martial arts, lifting weights, and basically spending every evening in a gym. Anyone who has ever had a serious back injury can attest to the daily challenges, both physically and mentally, of trying to live a full life while constantly being pulled down by seemingly interminable pain and discomfort.I've seen a few Physical Therapists, and for the most part they've helped, but the only person who can truly prescribe the intensity and frequency of rehabilitation exercises for a patient is . . the patient. You have to listen to your own body and determine, on your own, how far you can go and how frequently you should exercise. I've re-injured myself over 20 times over the last two years while following the advice of my Chiropractors, Doctors, and various PTs. Each time I thought I was fully healed, I would go back to the gym and pick up weights or put on my Gi and try to get back into training. I was wrong every single time, and undid all of the healing and rehabilitation and had to start right back from the beginning. What this does to the confidence and mindset of someone who is used to getting thrown around a dojo or lifting weights is beyond frustrating. But, I'm dealing with it.Anyway, because of this, I decided to approach a self-therapy program along with my regular treatment. I've read almost every article on the internet I could find about Physical Therapy as it pertains to back and spinal injuries, and I've pored through countless medical journals and Physical Therapy blogs. I even keep a dated back/spine log on my PC with a weekly log of what I eat, how I train and how I feel, any setbacks, and whether I feel I'm progressing in my rehabilitation.In my research, I came across this book. Before buying it, I read many reviews from people on Amazon and a few other places, and, for the most part, the reviews were good, so I decided to add it to my rehabilitation and physical therapy bookshelf at home. The book is easy is to read, and the techniques are pretty straightforward and simple. They break it to down a few different variations of the McKenzie Press-up. Like I said, the McKenzie Press-up is a tried and true technique when it comes to dealing with back injuries. Of the myriad exercises I've learned over the last few years from the various PTs and doctors I've been to, the McKenzie Press-up seems to be the best one. If you're into Yoga, you'll recognize the McKenzie Press-up is also called The Cobra pose. It reverses the forward bending of the spine (which is the root of many spinal problems) and reduces the stress and tension in the vertebrae in the lower spine. It forces lower discs in the spine to go back into place, and it also keeps flexibility and mobility in the Spine as a whole. The first time I tried doing a McKenzie Press-up (probably about 3 years ago), I immediately felt popping, cracking, and movement in my lower spine. At first it was a little frightening, but after a few sets, I could feel most of the tightness and stress going away from my lower spine. So I've kept using the technique since then. From my research and experience, it's best to do 3 or 4 sets of press-ups every day if you experience back pain or are trying to heal a back injury - unless your injury was caused by that exact same motion, then you need to pursue techniques that bend the spine the other way. Confirm the techniques with a Spine Doctor first, of course.So why the warning? Well, there is a variation of the McKenzie Press-up in this book where you stand up and, while placing your hands on your hips, bend backward as far as you can a few times. This version is recommended especially if you work all day in an office and are seated for most of your work day, which I do and am. Sitting, by the way, is the enemy of the spine. Anyway, about two months ago, after I finished reading the book, I decided to implement the standing version of the McKenzie Press-up at work. Throughout my day, I stood up about 10-15 times and did the standing press-ups. At first, I felt good. I was very happy because I usually have to find an empty office or a clean bathroom so that I could lay on the ground and do a few sets of the standard McKenzie Press-ups. That's how serious my injury is; if I can't do a few sets every day, even at work, my pain becomes so unbearable that I have to literally inhale NSAIDS just to make it through the day until I can go home and lie down. So, as I was saying, that day I did a good amount of standing press-ups. Toward the end of the day, I decided to go take a walk outside to get some air. I didn't walk for more than a block before I felt either a disc or vertebrae in my lower back move. Then the pain started. I had to go back upstairs into the office and take a few Advil and just take the pain until the end of the day. The next day I went to my Chiropractor and had him adjust me, and I was back to square one. Apparently I aggravated my lower back by doing the standing press-ups, so I've never done them again. After talking to my PT, I learned that the standing variation is more advanced version, and should only be done by people who are further along in their Spine injury recovery.Now, will everyone have this same experience? Of course not. Maybe every single exercise in this book will yield great results for some people. I just wanted to warn people to be careful, and to also run these exercises by a Spine Doctor or Physical Therapist before doing any of them. When it comes to your body, especially your Spine, you need to be very careful about self-therapy. It's still a good book to add to your bookshelf, but, like I said, be careful with the exercises contained within - especially the standing version of the McKenzie Press-up.

I enjoyed the positive nature of this book, and it was nice to learn more about the practices of a company to which I've devoted a large portion of my coffee patronage. But after awhile, it started to read more like a long promotional pamphlet touting Starbucks' excellence.Since I'm thinking about starting my own business, this book was helpful to me because it identified some important ideals to strive for. It made me think about my message, how I want to brand myself, and what inconsistencies I need to solve.On page 58, the author writes, "Great leaders look for ways to maximize the felt sense that their business generates." This made me think about the feelings I want to inspire in people when they meet me and when I have the opportunity to serve them.I stopped to reflect on my business goals and intended practices pretty often while reading this book. It devotes a chapter to each of Starbucks' five principles with thinking points at the end of each chapter that anyone can apply to their own business. I also liked the call-out boxes that help readers relate Starbucks' practices to their own situations.Starbucks has indeed made a commitment to providing for its employees, the community, and the environment. If more businesses (large and small) operated with the integrity described in this book, the world would be a much better place.The author appeared semi-unbiased when he talked of Starbucks' success stories, and he did not hesitate to address some of the bad press the company has received over the years. He discussed China's resistance to the opening of Starbucks stores in their country, saying the overall first impression was a prime example of "US imperialism" (pages 121-123). Then he goes on to discuss how Starbucks solved the bad image by getting involved in the communities they served and tailoring the Starbucks experience to the Chinese culture.At times, however, it goes to far with its "Starbucks saved the day!" anecdotes. It is a testament to how much effort the company puts into employee training though. I don't think I've ever had a rude barista at Starbucks. Actually, I haven't had any problems with baristas in the other coffeeshops I visit either.The book talks about how Starbucks raises the bar for the other businesses in the area when it sets up shop in a new place. I am sure there are examples to the contrary, but I have to take the book's word on it since I haven't been anywhere that Starbucks is considered "new" in a really long time!I think this book has some value for people going into business for themselves or those at the management level at a company where they have some decision-making power. As a small business owner, I've often looked up to Starbucks as a shining example of what can be achieved in the hospitality and retail business. So I picked up this book to hopefully learn about how Starbucks conducts business, so that I can use those lessons in my own business. However, I didn't find this book to be much help at all. The lessons are far too abstract to have meaning in the day to day operation and planning of a business. Principles like "Make your Mark" and "Surprise and Delight" are great general principles to aspire to, but they are presented in a format that reads like a Starbucks training manual. The book is at its best when its provides specifics, like when it states that Starbucks has a program that pays non-profits $10 an hour for every hour a partner volunteers there. But many of the examples are almost comical in the way its paints Starbucks as a saintly company. Nice to know that a partner who won the lottery shared it with her co-workers, but what does that tell me about HOW Starbucks created a culture of sharing; could this partner just be a really good person, while another partner might have kept the whole jackpot to himself.

This book is a MUST read for baristas and other Starbucks employees as it reaffirms WHY Starbucks is the number one coffee shop in the world. The employees meet expectations of their customers as the third place and it goes beyond getting a hot cup of coffee or icy frappuccino. It means making contact with the customer by smiling and asking about their day and the ritual of writing their name on their cup and remembering their order if they are a regular. It means surprising them by connecting with them on a deeper level with humor and compassion whenever possible. It means offering a fair trade product and be involved in the community that Starbucks thrives in and making it a better place for those businesses around them. It means offering health insurance to part time employees and understanding the Starbucks experience means extraordinary commitment to excellence above and beyond their product.

Although I won't be owning a business anytime soon, this books gives solid insight into the many principles that make Starbucks so successful. Meanwhile, I've found that I could use the principles in this book for my everyday life.- As the president of a student organization, I've found that principles like "be your own" very helpful. I want to make the experience in my club to be a pleasant one, and Starbucks has mastered that. There's no reason to copy another organization completely. It's important to create your own unique environment.- Structure of the book is organized very well. A little introduction and explanation, some examples and stories, and then a final checklist of things to remember. Thoughtful, brief, and understandable. The checklist is worth of making a copy to post on your desk.Whether you're a business CEO, leader, student, or just a regular employee, this book will help you realize that you can make a difference sooner rather than later.
