Not the sort of book that would normally hold my attention, but the sensitivity and openness of the writing made me want to know the author better, and that quest kept me following in his footsteps from chapter to chapter. I read it in one sitting, lest I lose sight of him in the complex environments he brings so vividly to life. When I turned the last page, I left the book feeling as if I'd sat across the aisle from an unforgettable individual on a train.The journey was over all too quickly and I got off at my stop glad to have met him, but with a hint of regret at the thought that I'd never encounter him again. It takes a brilliant author to accomplish that. Don't pass this one by.

When a five-year-old child falls asleep on a train in India, his life is changed forever. As he sleeps, the train transports him away from everything he knows. The child from a rural village awakes in the capital city of India, Calcutta, with all the dangers an urban setting brings. Used to begging for food, he manages to scavenge enough to survive, choosing to sleep each night with a group of holy men, thereby insuring his safety. The boy's name is "Sheru," which is the Hindu word for "lion." My first question was answered, for I could not see a connection between an African animal and a small child from India. Over time, Sheru becomes Saroo, the name he goes by today. After surviving about two months on the streets of Calcutta, Saroo ends up in an orphanage while authorities attempt to find his family. When no one comes forward to identify Saroo, he becomes available for adoption. Within a few months, a childless couple, the Brierleys, adopt Saroo and take him to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia to live. A few years later, the couple adopts another little Indian boy, Saroo's brother, Mantash. While life in Australia is a happy time for Saroo, he never forgets his Indian family, his mother, Kamla, named after the Hindu goddess of creation, Kamala, his two older brothers, Kallu and Guddu, and his younger sister, Shekila. The father of the family has married a second wife and has abandoned his first family, thereby leaving them pitifully poor. Kamla earns a meager living carrying construction bricks on her head, but all the children scavenge food and beg for money to survive. As the years go by, Saroo wonders if his memories of his previous life are accurate or merely the imaginings of a five-year-old. Saroo has his Australian friends and his Indian friends, and he becomes aware of the internet and Google Earth, a program that allows one to get a bird's eye view of geographic locations. It is then that Saroo decides to search for the neighborhood in which he grew up. After five years of meticulous searching and against all odds, on March 31, 2011, Saroo locates the house he grew up in! He begins to plan his visit to India twenty years after he left it. Concerned he will hurt the feelings of his adoptive parents, he gently refuses their requests to accompany him, feeling this is something he must do by himself.The rest of this book deals with the incredible reunion with his Indian family, how both his families meet, and how the product of two widely diverse cultures adjusts to a contented future. The years-long search could have ended in failure many times, but I believe Destiny played a major role in reuniting Saroo with his Indian family. It also speaks to the stubbornness of an individual who refuses to give up on the dream of finding his original family, assisted by countless people who offered opinions, encouragement, and other assistance when needed. I was especially impressed by Kamla's faith that her son would return if she simply stayed where he could find her. I highly recommend this book.

I'm pretty sure that almost everybody who reads this book, "Lion" by Saroo Brierley, is going to see the movie with Dev Patel. Or, has already seen it. The book, which was originally published under the title of "A Long Way Home: A Memoir", has been reissued as a tie-in for the newly released movie. "Lion" is the story of a journey a five year old boy makes by himself from his hometown in rural India, to the large city of Calcutta. (now, Kolkata) and after being lost in the streets of the huge city, is taken to an orphanage, where he is luckily adopted by an Australian family from Tasmania. He lives the next twenty years, happily with his new family, but always remembers the tragic journey and his mother and siblings he left behind in India. With the advent of Google maps, he's able to trace his birth family's village. He then travels back to India and is reunited with that family, while remaining close to his adopted family and life in Australia.That's basically Saroo Brierley's story and how he tells it in the book is interesting. But as I read it, I felt a bit of a remove from Brierley's telling it. Am I asking for more emotion, and if so, is that a fair request? I'm looking forward to seeing the movie next week, and there, on the screen, might be a more vivid recreation. I enjoyed reading the book, though.

What I found interesting was that I could envision the book as a movie from it's narration--even if a movie about this story had not been made.We first meet Saroo as a toddler, then narrating his memories before the age of 5. He does so for many chapters, until he becomes an adult and seems ready to back track any memories or words he had seen from his past. ( At this point he has moved out of his loving, adoptive home on another continent), yet felt comfortable enough to find his biological family--the one he remembers at age 5--from India. And that, he does!Over all, I believe that the adoption center he was living in after losing his way at the age of 5, saved his life. If he had continued to live on the streets of places after becoming disorientated and lost from riding 'run-away trains', the child could have been taken into horrific bondage. God Bless him for that not happening!It is a fine story.

I remember being 5 yrs old and I think it would have killed me to find myself alone in a huge city like Saroo did. This is an amazing story of his survival, adoption in Australia and his eventual reunification with his family in India. This true story kept me on the edge of my seat throughout and in the end left me with joy in my heart! In the end many lives in India and Australia were enriched because of Saroo's adoptive parent's selfless decision to adopt, educate and nuture a needy child. As well as a compelling story, the book is well written. I will admit, I skimmed through one section about 1/3 of the way through. I don't know if it was an issue too heavily dwelt upon or my weak and pampered life. I couldn't take hearing again and again of the reality of 5 yr old Saroo's hunger and total destitude situation. I ached too much for the little boy. I would love to see the movie and I definitely recommend the book.

If you're interested in proofreading, you know you are no dummy. This is a good intro to both proofreading and copyediting, how to do them, and to some extent, how to make a career. I haven't had a chance to proofread this entire book, so I can't attest to its accuracy, but I'm impressed with the breadth of content.Published in 2007, it touches on electronic proofreading and editing but doesn't delve into the dozens (hundreds?) of apps and software in use for editing today, nor does it address the challenges of proofing collaborative and cloud documents. It might be time for an updated edition!

This is by far the most helpful book that I've read when it comes to learning how to edit. Being able to see examples was immensely helpful. There were a few things that threw me off, like EDITING errors (or at least inconsistencies), but I caught on. For example, on page 243 she explains some different basic codes in electronic editing. One of them is [NL] = numbered list. Then on page 250 she uses [UN] for an unnumbered list even though she never mentioned the "[UN]" code anywhere in the list of codes. There were a couple instances of that sort of thing happening.But overall I would absolutely recommend this book if you're thinking of becoming an editor or proofreader or going to school to be one. It's a must-have book on my shelf.

The first thing I did was laugh at the review that gave this book a low score and said she wasn't feeling it. Sorry, I normally wouldn't even read the other reviews for this type of book, but that one gave me my laugh of the day. Whether you want to break into proofreading and copyediting, or whether you just need a quick brush-up, this book isn't bad. There are things it misses going over, but they are things that the normal proofreader won't normally run into. I edit contracts, corporate brochures and correspondence, annual meeting documents, etc., and this book has come in handy numerous times. This is my second copy, because I needed an updated one (plus my first one had fallen apart).

Just started proofreading and copyediting and while "The Chicago Style Manual - 16th edition" is THE bible for the publishing house i freelance for, this has helped me realize many of the common questions I had: How to break into the business when you are new? How to present yourself to publishing houses (and their addresses are here!) using what for a resume? What are some common mistakes - such as "their, they're or there"? - which BTW if that rankles you when someone gets it wrong, you're in the right business. However, does not specify when to use "than or then".... Love Ms Gilad's style: friendly and unassuming and yet instructive. However, can be too simplistic at times, omitting heavier questions of usage. For that you can always go to the questions at "The Chicago Manual's" website. That's the only reason I gave it a 4 star review vs 5. Helpful by all means, BUT not in depth enough for me. All in all, this is worth purchasing for many good insights and info you wont find elsewhere.

I found this to be one of he better copyediting/proofreading books that I have come across - but I also love the "-- for dummies" books. It was nicely written and had really good tips, but for someone who is already good at proofreading, the practice test were wayyy to easy. This would be great for someone who is struggling or wants to put their foot into the door as a copyeditor.Overally, great tips but predictable practice tests.

I'm a professional writer and editor, and I think this book is a fantastic tutorial on how to dig into a proofreading or editing job. Though it's not really style-guide specific, I like keeping a copy of this book on my shelf for a quick reference — Gilad's grammar and punctuation examples are really top notch.

This book was so incredibly helpful! Easy to use and easy to understand. It was a great reference for me when I was editing a friends book. I originially ordered this as an electronic book, but I will order a hard copy so I can mark it up and bookmark pages that I need.

Aristophanes was born, probably in Athens, c. 449 BC and died between 386 and 380 BC. Little is known about his life, but there is a portrait of him in Plato's Symposium. Great!

Frogs is an ancient Greek play as as they all are, not simple straightforward, girl gets guy kind of plot. It is highly amusing but to understand the humor, some knowledge of ancient greek playwrights and gods is necessary.

Good introduction and interesting notes make for a good read.

Comedy is notoriously difficult to translate--not only do some cultures have entirely different senses of humor, the word-play and deft cultural allusions that make good comedy are often untranslatable. Against these odds, translator David Barrett has successfully brought Aristophanes into modern English with all his wit, sarcasm, and sly digs at well-known Greeks.The plays collected here--Frogs, Wasps, and Women at the Thesmophoria--are rendered so well that I was laughing all the way through. The translations are remarkably true to the originals and well foot-noted where the translator has diverged from the text, usually to make a joke an English-speaking reader would understand.Frogs and Other Plays is a fast, easy, and very funny read, well worth the time for anyone interested in ancient Greece, drama, or good old-fashioned comedy.Recommended.

First of all, I was suprised to find tbat the introduction to this Aristophanes collection was more lucid and readable than that before the "Birds" Collection, which is really meant to be the original volume. The editor, Shomit Dutta, did an excellent job of modernizing the Barrett translation and adding extensive end notes. Although, as usual, I find footnotes far more helpful, the work as a whole was so wonderful that I had to give it five stars.As with the first volume, this Penguin Classics collections presents plays which are easy to read and genuinely funny, especially for one who has just recently read Greek drama.

This is definitely recommended to anyone interested in the Kohinoor's history and anyone who gets stirred by the claims and propaganda to bring it back to its roots. More interesting were the tales of the sultan and takes who owned it than the history of the diamond's travel. In fact the first part appealed to me more than the latter. Duleep Singh's life, hitherto unknown to me, paints a very tragic picture.

I'm obsessed with this book, couldn't put it down. Tons of research has gone into writing this - I love it, it's captivating, the book gave me a new perspective about this famous diamond.

Great book for research. Full of history!!

Great book, I love it. However, I only wished they would mention the Brutality of the Mughal empire to Hindus and the massacre of Hindu men, women and children at the time. The book makes it seems that Mughal empire was gracious and fabulous. However, one Muslim king murdered many Hindus and made a wall of skulls.

Well researched and well written book. What is amazing is that the Kohinoor has gone through a roller coaster ride throughout its history and yet survived. Hard to see Britain handing it back though.

Contains coverage of data modeling in Cassandra, CQL (Cassandra Query Language), Cassandra internals (e.g. how data is replicated, how data is written to and read from disk, etc.), deployment considerations, and performance tuning. The text is quite engaging and enjoyable to read. All-in-all, a careful reading of the book will bring a Cassandra newbie to the point where he/she can begin working with Cassandra.However, the book is in need of additional editing – it contains enough sections that are confusing, misleading and in some cases, completely wrong, that it is not really suitable as an authoritative reference or (as its title claims) a definitive guide.A few examples:Page 70 contains a warning about counters, stating that “the increment and decrement operators are not idempotent”, with no additional explanation. Without further explanation, this statement is useless to most people new to Cassandra because incrementing and decrementing are normally not idempotent operations – incrementing a counter twice should be expected to leave the counter in a state different than incrementing a counter once. The passage goes on to say “There is no operation to reset a counter directly, but you can approximate a reset by reading the counter value and decrementing by that value. Unfortunately, this is not guaranteed to work perfectly, as the counter may have been changed elsewhere in between reading and writing.” While that passage may be correct, it has nothing to do with idempotence; instead it is due to the fact that read-modify-write of counters is not performed atomically by Cassandra. As it happens, there may be an issue with Cassandra counters and idempotence in versions of Cassandra prior to 2.1, and with counter inaccuracies resulting from timeouts in all versions of Cassandra, but these issues are nowhere described in the book. The book’s handling of counters is deficient in other ways as well – e.g. no detailed examples are given to illustrate how counters might be profitably employed in a real-world data model.Even more concerning is the discussion of “wide rows” which first occurs on page 59 and continues at various points throughout the book. Page 59 defines a wide row as a row that has “lot and lots (perhaps tens of thousands or even millions) of columns”. But, the following page illustrates a wide row as being synonymous with a partition, i.e. a set of rows of a table with a common set of value for the columns that compose the partition key. These are two different notions, and the book does not make it clear which is the correct definition for “wide row”. A later section of the book (on page 90) uses the hotel model (introduced in the logical data modeling section) as an example of the “wide row” model. However, the most columns of any table in the hotel model is 7, hardly “lots and lots”, so presumably this section is using “wide row” to mean “partition” rather than “a row with lots and lots of columns”.More partition confusion occurs on page 97 under the heading “Calculating Partition Size”. We are warned that we need to calculate a maximum partition size to look for whether “our tables will have partitions that will be overly large”, and that “Cassandra’s hard limit is 2 billion cells per partition, but we’ll likely run into performance issues before reaching that point”. A few paragraphs later, it calculates the partition size (in columns) of the available_rooms_by_hotel_date table from the book’s hotel data model as the number of rows times the number of non-primary key columns. For the number of rows, it uses 5000 hotels *100 rooms/hotel *730 days = 365,000,000. But, this is the number of rows in the table. Since this table’s partition key is hotel_id, there is one partition per hotel, and so the number of rows per partition is actually 100 rooms/hotel*730 days = 73,000, a far cry from 365,000,000!Page 186 contains a misleading statement about inserting with light-weight transactions. It states that when inserting rows with the “with not exists” qualifier, if a row already exists with the same values for the primary key columns as the row that we are trying to insert, that the CQL interpreter will return a failure, along with the “values that we tried to enter”. However, a few paragraphs above, it is said that “if a transaction fails because the existing values did not match the one you expected, Cassandra will include the current ones so you can decide whether to retry or abort without making an extra request” – which sounds like Cassandra is returning the values that are already in the database rather than the ones that we tried to enter.A final example of misleading text occurs on page 305, where the sizing for machines used as Cassandra nodes is described. This section recommends that Cassandra nodes in development environments should have at least 2 cores and 8 GB of memory, and that Cassandra nodes in production environments should have at least “eight cores (although four cores are acceptable for virtual machines), and anywhere from 16 MB to 64 MB of memory”. This section raises two questions:1. Why would a virtual machine need fewer cores than a physical server? This assertion seems dubious. And, even if true (which seems unlikely), it is sufficiently counterintuitive as to require explanation, but none is given.2. Is 16 MB really sufficient RAM for a production Cassandra node? Presumably the author intended to say 16GB to 64GB (rather than MB).In summary, the book’s scope and engaging text make it a useful text for those new to Cassandra. However, it is in need of editing, and its numerous inaccuracies and misleading sections preclude it from being useful as an authoritative reference or definitive guide. Hopefully the third edition will address these issues.

This book was written by someone who clearly know Cassandra very well, but has lost the ability to explain it to someone who doesn't already know a lot about Cassandra in the first place.Data modeling topics, arguably one of the most crucial aspects of learning a new database system are given a cursory glance with a single example and then left aside.There is a lot of material about which classes to use what, the various strategies, etc. However, something that is basic for use "what is a cluster column" has two sentences in the entire book, none of which explain what it does, when I should apply it, etc.Another topic, static columns, is also mentioned briefly. It explains _what_ it is, but in such a way that after I went online and read about it in the docs, I could say that the description is accurate, but useless.At at no point was there any example of _when should I use it_.The book spend a lot of time on minutia (this is how you setup the client API in Python, Java, etc). It talks about the _history_ of long dead client projects (not sure why I should care about that), but when talking about prepared statements, for example, it doesn't cover what happens if after preparing the statement, I'm connected to a node that didn't get that statement.That seems like an obvious thing that I'll want to know, but there is no coverage of that. In the same manner, secondary indexes are covered to the extent that we know that they exists, but no discussion of their design, implication for use, etc are covered at all.I'm very disappointed by this book.

Tried to catch up Cassandra using couple of books and this is the one which is way better than the others. This book covers both plan/design, installation of Cassandra and integrate with other tools.I would suggest this book as a must buy for anyone who wants to learns about Cassandra. If possible try to grab the Kindle edition which allows you to read across platforms.

Decent intro book to Cassandra. We are starting to proof out Cassandra at work and this book has benefited me.

Awesome book, it'll give you an overview of Cassandra, what it is and how it works internally. That's required as it's quite different from the rest of the DBs. Cover both introductory and more advanced topics!
