I thank the Author and NetGalley for allowing me the privilege of reading this book early and have preordered my own hardcover copy. This historical nonfiction book reads as easily as fiction. As a medical professional the title and blurb immediately interested me. The Royal Art of Poison reveals so much more than what I thought of as poison. The author delves into poison for murder, accidental poisoning, poison in medical treatments, poisons in daily skin care and poisons in clothing. Death by deplorable heath care, poor hygiene, putrid water and sewer systems. A must read book for anyone who loves history, mysteries, and medicine. Eleanor Herman is an excellent author and I look forward to reading more of her books.

HIlarious book in many ways. Whenever you hear someone talk about the good old days, you need to hand them this book. It isn't just about the many ways people found to poison rivals. The sheer dirtiness of life before the 1800's is appalling, and people are very quick to forget the infectious diseases that regularly killed people. I'd like to hand this book to the many idiots I come across when teaching pathophysiology and physiology, who refuse to get vaccinations! I'm so tired of arguing about the need for specific chemicals that will kill a chemical that will kill a chemical being (us) if we don't use it.Herman wrote pretty well, and I like the snide comments she made. Many people don't realize how prevalent certin heavy metals were both in constructing homes, use on daily materials and dishes, in medications that really did more harm. I can guarantee if someone asked me if I would like to live in the past, they'd get a big resounding "NO!" HOwever, if people do not read and understand science, and quit listening to the many unscientific idiots out there like our current president, we may end up in the Dark Ages again, sooner than we think!

Life at Versailles during the reign of King Louis XIV or in a Florentine palazzo during the Renaissance seems glamorous to our eyes, but if somehow we were transported back to such a place and time our senses would be assaulted by the brutal realities of filth, odors, and violence. Eleanor Herman, well known for her so-called "pop history" books (which are nonetheless as competently researched as many more highly rated but dryer works), provides an entertaining, if sometimes stomach-churning, look at the realities of life and death in some of the best known European palaces and castles.Herman begins with a survey of the many hazards of life for the medieval and early modern royal families and their courtiers, from filthy palaces reeking with human and animal waste, to cosmetics which gradually poisoned their users, and to medical care which often did far more harm than good. She then examines a gallery of notable Europeans who had nasty deaths, chronicling their sufferings, listing any contemporary conclusions as to the causes of their deaths, and then (most interestingly) giving modern medicine's best explanations for what really happened to them. The time period runs from roughly the High Middle Ages up to the early nineteenth century. A concluding section examines more modern cases of suspicious deaths, including the vast number of people who happened to run afoul of Vladimir Putin.Herman's sense of humor serves her and her readers well here. A subject which could have made for some grim reading is instead handled deftly, amusing without detracting from the tragic events she chronicles.

In addition to learning about what did and didn't happen in the palaces long, long ago, it was very interesting to see how medicine was practiced back then. So much nonsense, it was very enlightening to see. The author has great online videos describing sections of the books that are really funny and are a great introduction to the tone of the book.

The ingredients are easy to find and buy, and the recipes are all things I can make easily, even if I’m tired after a busy day at work. My daughter bought the first book and loved it so, we ordered the 2nd and she devoured it in a day. We just ordered the 3rd book and are waiting for the 4th to come out. It is positive and fun and empowering for her to read. Although she no longer takes gymnastics (she just became a 1st Degree Black Belt), she still is interested in the story and the characters. I would highly recommend this book.

My daughter (age 8, level 4 gymnast) loves these books. She is a bit of a reluctant reader -- and much prefers spending her time in the gym. These books have grabbed her interest. She appreciates that the routines/skills described in the book (the characters are level 3, I believe) are accurate, and finds the stories relatable. Perfect reading level for grades 2-4. Looking forward to the next one!

I have read and and re-read this book for over twenty years. At first I was looking for interpretive technique or ways to make sense of dreams. But gradually I became convinced that in Hillman's 'universe' this is not the road to go. So then I began to observe. I made a dream journal and even an index to recurring subject matter. Often I ask myself "To what use is all this?" And then I return to observing and not trying to find a "use" for it. Many years ago I stopped trying to apply dreams to waking life. What I do, instead, is to try and keep an image in my minds eye as my day plays out. This is what Mr. Hillman recommends in the book.

A remarkable book. What Hillman wants is for us to see dreams in a whole new way: not as something to be interpreted and assigned a meaning, but something experienced as itself. Dreams are like a painting or a sonata or a child: if you assign it a meaning you have done violence to it. Or maybe we could say they are like koans. I'd better stop or next I'm going to say the dream is a finger pointing at the moon. Clearly the crux of this work is far reaching. Not easy to get your head around but when you do the world starts changing. Highly recommended.

I've been a (fairly) conscious dreamer my entire life, and Hillman's Dream and the Underworld has proven to be the most durable source of knowledge on the subject, particularly in his descriptions of the day world and the night world. Several cranks on this page have demanded a shorter "essay" version of this material -- which only speaks to the problem of the modern mental environment that demands fast answers.The Psyche is a deep and wonderful, and sometimes terrifying, place. Persons who are interested in enduring self-knowledge will accept nothing less than a substantial meditation on the subject. I keep this book close by, and recommend it to all serious students of the subject.

"Blue Fire" presented a better set of artriculations, IMO, although NOT oriented to the underworld, per se.I certainly resonate with Hillman's notions. They are similar to what a few radical contemplative traditions (e.g., Advaita, Bon, Dzogchen, Mahamudra, the Tao de Ching, Kasmiri Saivism) seem to be pointing to as well. What This is can't be said or described. You'd better be pleased with a kind of nihilistic ambiguity with Hillman's notions, and I am not dissing them at all. Rationalism and modernity have gone too far, and post modernism has not gone far enough. Things are not what they seem to be. I especially like Hillman's idea of psychology as a playful aesthetic, but that was written about more in "Blue Fire." I'll continue to pick up a book of his occasionally to revisit his conversations. I mean, it's not like one interpretation is better than any other, so an author's writing /articulations are the matter of things here.

Many readers may be familiar with James A. Hillman's best selling "The Soul's Code." As a best seller, that was within the genre of popular psychology. "The Dream and the Underworld," however deals with the area within psychology of "depth psychology." Our present culture is a milieu in which psychology and psychiatry deal with matters such as biopsychiatry, psychopharmacology, brief psychotherapy, quick fixes. A lot of this climate has to do with third party payments, either by an insurer or an Employee Assistance Plan. A qualified psychiatrist or clinical psychologist may often use Depth Psychology in conjunction with the prescription of medications where time and money are not an issue. Depth psychology seeks to treat the causes of a psychiatric disorder rather than just provide relief from the symptoms. Dream analysis is an art, or science, that has a long-respected history dating back to Biblical times. More recently, it has been the subject of extensive writing by 20th century psychiatrists such as Freud and Jung.I struggled with the writings of both Freud and Jung on dreams in university courses, having found that they did not read all that well. Rather than say that I follow a particular school of psychological theory, I like the more pragmatic approach of taking what is meaningful from those that I read. Hillman's thesis for "The Dream and the Underworld" is briefly outlined in Chapter 1. It is more like the opening statement that a lawyer might make in presenting a case rather than the abstract that a psychologist might write at the beginning of a journal article. Hillman does not rely on repression or compensation, but deals with the dream in relation with the soul and the soul with death. In the context used by Hillman, the "soul" takes on a meaning that equates to the human "psyche" but with a quasi-religious quality. You should not take Hillman's concept of the soul as necessarily being the same as the soul discussed at church or Sunday school. To study the soul, we must go deep. The study of the soul (going back to the Greek origins of the word "psychology") implies a journey into the depths of the soul.Classical Greek and Roman literature locates the dreams in the House of Hades. Hillman uses images to begin in this mythological underworld. In many ways, it is similar to his "Pan and the Nightmare." He emphasizes both observation and the insight that follows from drawing of inferences from the metaphor of the myth. This is not a "how to" book. There is an emphasis on the analysis of the dream as a modality of therapy, however, in other pieces of Hillman's writings, he posits the concept that "self therapy" is not effective. One of the essential things Hillman emphasizes is that we should be aware of our dreams. Although not actually so stated, there would be an advantage to keeping a journal where the subject logs his/her dreams. I feel that "The Dream and the Underworld" provides a road map to a greater level of self understanding.
