Carse takes you by the hand for a walk by a lake. He talks in a soft voice. He points to the center of the lake. Then he sets off an atomic bomb below the lake. He does this over and over again. Carse is one of history's true originals

excellent!

If I'm going to read a novel based on the life of Jesus, I'd rather it at the very least avail itself of a recognizable personality. It seemed more like a very unflattering parody of the Jesus story than an attempt to answer the many challenges and questions which Jesus's mainstream accounts pose. I was hoping for something that I could share and discuss among open-minded lovers of wisdom. That may be what this is, but its obtuse approach to the subject does not seem to invite discussion, but to simply leave the reader feeling misled. Again, that's just my perception. I want to find out what others thought and felt about it.

At every point where James Carse allows the canonical gospels to touch his narrative, he has given not a twist, but stood the story on its head, to show by subtle indirection that the opposite of what we have been force-fed through tradition is closer to the truth of the events in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. "If the genius of ruling has not left us, we will not oppose your words. There is a far better way to remove their danger, though their danger is great. We will make them our own. When Rome speaks on behalf of the poor, Rome will be seen as the enemy of great evils. We cannot do away with these loathsome birds so we declare them royal swallows. We will do the same with your words, or with some of your words...." (page 143) Carse has intimate experience of these words, and has followed their precept re some of the sayings and tales surrounding the wandering sage of Nazareth; he has appropriated them for today's intellectual. Clever--a very clever book.

It is maddening when so-called wise "men" turn questions constantly back to the questioner, especially when the questioner is sincere. This book, which purports to be a "gospel" shows a Jesus who never answers a question or replies with a story that says little. If one of the major relgions of the world were based on the kind of Jesus represented in this book, people of this faith would be inept. Surely, there are some interesting dialogues in this gospel. The conversation between Pilate and Jesus has an interesting bent. But overall one would wonder why anyone would follow this man. His words are uninspiring and he seems not really to care about anyone. Maybe I missed the point.

The author makes many speculative and outlandish predictions of the future. His sheer number of intuitive predictions will allow him to be right on many matters, but very off on some.What is lacking are analysis and technical details of why the future will be the way the author claims. For example, he claims lack of energy supply and technological progress will bring forth an age of hydrogen powered cars and fusion nuclear reactors. Yet, he provides no technical reasons why these two technologies will dominate the energy industry. Just how will we manage to produce hydrogen in large concentration and quantities which will be cost effective when it takes MORE energy to produce concenttrated hydrogen today than the energy value of the hydrogen themselves? Also, since when was controlled nuclear fusion reactors even possible? An explaination of how we will overcome the technical hurdles is missing throughout this book.Some of the claims are downright outlandish. For example, the author claims we will have teleporter which will transfer objects throughout the globe. Again, the missing piece is of any scientific backing or explaination.Some of the predictions are based on facts, and therefore, have strong predictive value. For example, the author claims that we will have a skilled worker shortage well into 2025 and beyond. This is based on a solid demographic data which indicates that we will have a shrinking workforce of suitable age in America.Finally, the author is a PhD, but he never says on what subject. He also seems to compare himself to Da Vinci.....He claims many of his previous predictions were right on target. But I imagine many of his predictions were dead off target as well. The sheer number of predictions in this book will allow the author to claim that he is a futurist because many of his predictions will probably come true. Just don't expect him to backup his claims with solid science, facts, or analysis.

The book contains a lot of preening; the author seems to think it is important to remind us (anecdotally) how many huge companies and heads-of-state he's interacted with. Many of his predictions range from poorly explored (he talks about a hydrogen fuel economy without addressing the fact that hydrogen is just a transport--not a readily available source of energy) to the absurd (predictions that teleportation will be available within decades, given the fact of photonic teleportation which doesn't even slightly approach the complexity of disintegrating, transporting and reintegrating an object!) There's also a lot of political advocacy here; I'd have simply preferred an analysis of technological and cultural trends along with research to back it up.

I usually enjoy fiction but this was an interesting read.

I jotted the name of the book down and bought a copy.This book has given me a broadened perspective on where our world is today in regards to business, technology, medicine, security, terrorism, population, immigration, the environment, energy, and even what it may mean to be human during the remainder of this century and beyond.The book is divided into 12 chapters. The first chapter sets the premise: The future can be extreme. The future can be bright, or it can be dark. The concept of "Future-Readiness" is introduced, and how the degree of awareness and readyness can change the probable outcome of the future. Dr. Canton also describes a process of looking at the future to determine the extremes, the causes of the extremes, and thus the choices that can be made today to shape the future.The next eight chapters address various factors which we are living with today which will have a bearing on how the future develops. These topics include: Energy, Prosperity/Poverty, Human Capital, Medicine, Environment, Globalization, Security, and Advanced Science.The last three chapters serve to pull together the information in the first nine chapters to "plug in the crystal ball" and examine how the confluence of factors will impact the future of the individual, and the global future with an emphasis on China and the U.S.Granted, there are some pretty wild and imaginative "predictions" of specific inventions, such as teleportation of matter, but the public thought Leonardo DaVinci crazed when he suggested that people could fly with the aid of machines.For me, the chapter with the most impact was the last chapter: The Future of America and Democracy. This chapter is a "call to service" for America, and the world. It very powerfully urges that we the people, government and business, consider taking certain actions to address the challenges that face our communities, our nation, our world, and humanity.This was both a thoroughly enlightening and entertaining read. Two years after publication, this book is prescient and timely reading for anyone who wonders "Where are we going?", "How are we going to get there?", "What could go wrong?", but most importantly "What can we do?".

After finishing this book I went back and bought the other two books Kings of Wall Street & Duke of Manhattan as I enjoyed Scarlet and Max character in this story and realized they already have their own stories. I hope We will be getting Darcy’s story next . This one is definitely a must recommend!

I swear Violet was so hard headed I was screaming at her "Just Go!! Just Go To London!! Take The Hint!!" But I know at times I am just as hard headed...Great Character! And Alexander had so much tunnel vision, Violet finagled him out of his tunnel in just the perfect way.Not only was I thinking...Just Kiss Already!!...but you made me laugh quite a few times. I highlighted a couple that made me laugh..."I didn't know his first name, but I knew how long it took him to pee. It felt like a small victory." - Violet"Put me down, Violet," she said. "Anyone would think you'd just been released from prison." - Darcy (Can't wait for Darcy's story)I am a loyal fan and subscribe to your Facebook Readers Group. When you were writing this you posted one day that you felt your readers were going to hate you for the scene you just wrote for Violet. It had changed her direction in life and left her living more in the moment, rather than planning ahead.After stalling in her life, she takes the offer from one of her friends to go to the UK and do three months work there.That’s where she meets barrister Alexander Knight. He’s the workaholic of workaholics. Driven to prove himself because of his father’s achievements. He doesn’t really need to prove himself, but he feels he has to and the man doesn’t give himself any time off at all.The attraction between him and Violet is instantaneous. When they finally act on it, it’s hot and sexy.Overall, I loved this. It had a bit of everything. It was funny at times, emotional, sexy and hot. When Alexander gets distracted by work at a time when he shouldn’t have, it begins the path to destruction. Violet’s never pushed him to spend time with her, but he realises the hard way, that he’s a selfish man and driven for all the wrong reasons.I wanted to slap him sometimes, and hug him too. Loved this.

The heroine, Violet King, was compelling - pretty, smart, and sassy, if a bit scarred. The hero, Alexander Knightley, was also compelling - handsome, smart, and driven, but unavailable. They had great chemistry and plenty of sizzle. The storyline was straightforward and predictable, but the writing style was so good that it kept the story moving. Overall, I loved it, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Darcy’s book is as good as Scarlet’s and Violet’s!

I haven’t read in quite some time and as soon as I saw this blurb I instantly one-clicked. And although it was a little different then what my brain thought it would be—people in their twenties—it turned out so much better than I had originally hoped for. Perfect after not reading for a long time. I couldn’t put this book down. And I missed two or three other couples. the story took me to beautiful England and the sexy mr. Knightley. This book had charm, sweetness and the fun times were sexy to read. Wink. Very strong characters who made me feel all emotions. I just loved this book. And I’ve never read from this author before so that’s pretty cool. Definitely getting the paperback!!!

My most recent Bay book and as usual, it is superb. I listen to some of her books over and over on audible. Great bed time stories...they help me fall asleep and if I awaken during the night, lull me back. Not boring at all, just good love stories with fairly predictable "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl again" scenarios. Hero and heroine are likable, sizzling sex, developing love, just the perfect love story.

This was a great book. Alex was so driven. All he did was work. His marriage failed because he only worked and resented spending time with his wife. They have been separate for 3 years. Violet is brought in to help Alex. He is years behind in his billing and his office is a mess with towers of paper. Violet is his perfect match in everything and Alex realizes he doesn’t mind spending time with her and enjoying life since Violet is in London for the first time. The start to really get close to each other but Violet’s time in London is coming to an end what will that do. Read it to find out.

Alexander and Violet.....love them both. They were definitely as we say opposite attracts. First meeting on the subway, only to be his assistant he didn’t know about. The attraction was mutual immediately. They take you on a emotional roller coaster of attraction, lust, sex, disappointments and love... a page turner. I’m loving this series. Does Darcy find love too?

This book is fantastic! I love laying in my bed at night and coloring. I wanted something with thick perforated pages. This is the one. I’m so impressed with this book- it’s huge. It’s close to an inch think! It’s got so many adorable pages and I can’t wait to get started on them all. I tore a page out last night and used my gel pens- there was no bleed through. Every page is blank on the back except for a nice quote with a tiny picture you can color. In the front of the book, there are several tips on great coloring. There are also several pages that show you great color combinations. I highly recommend this adult coloring book for children and adults alike. You will love it!

Bought this over the Milepost since the reviews touted it to have more complete listing and accurate descriptions of the camping grounds. Unfortunately, we found it wasn't as helpful to us. Was looking at campsites on Glenn Highway and found some inaccuracies - said view of glacier, nope, was not visible at all. Ended up at a pullout instead to boondock and that spot had amazing views...for free! Driving up Richardson Hwy, there was a public campground that was not in the book at all! Found it on the online Milepost which I took a screenshot of. Then in Seward, would have been nice to have been warned that everyone had to pay a dumping fee ($5 per dump), regardless of paying the utility site (water/elec) rate, currently $40/nt. We ended up boondocking a lot to see the views & have some privacy instead of staying at the RV parks, which were basically parking lots so close to each other that you could hear your neighbor's conversions.Since this was a guide to AK camping, hopefully they will include in the next issue pullouts were you could camp for free yet have awesome views...there were lots of them, we found while driving around.

We just completed a 7 day RV trip through Alaska. This was our first RV experience. I found this book invaluable. We stayed at several different campgrounds some with full hook-ups and some with none. It is a very comprehensive guide that covers not only Alaska but the Yukon along the Alcan highway as well. It provides information on each camp site, broken down by area, such as pricing, type of hook-ups, type of sites RV or tent, and local sites/activities.

If you camp Alaska you must have this book. We used edition 4 for our 2009 trip and it became our "bible". Just now received 7th edition for our upcoming summer long trip back to wonderland.We had the Mile Post Guide as well but this was best for camping onto.

My husband and I spent 5 months in 2017 traveling to, throughout, and back home from Alaska. This book was a priceless resource. Because it was published in 2014, there were some changes in reality from the book. A few campgrounds had gone out of business; some were better than the information in the book and some were worse. The organization of this book for the Alaska Highway and the various areas of Alaska is fantastic, in that it is so easy to follow a road and see what campgrounds are coming up. Our RV's navigation system provides a listing of upcoming campgrounds, but it does not rate them or provide any information. That is where this book becomes invaluable. I see, though, that an updated edition was published in 2017, so I would suggest that people purchase the newest edition.

Clear, concise and just the information you need. Gives a good description of the campgrounds, and needed information to determine if it is suitable for big rigs, which I have. It is also the best information I have found on the sites to see along the route. Much better than the highly touted Milepost.

This book was so helpful! We used this, together with Milepost, for our first time RV camping in Alaska. There were maps and descriptions of the general area, plus information to help us pick our campsites as we were travelling: price range, laundry facilities, camp host, dump sites, phone numbers, and other "opinions" on the site. Descriptions are pretty accurate, so we were able to pick our site the morning of camping. No advance planning needed. Once we picked our campsite using this book, we used the Milepost to plan our trip along the way. A definite "must have" for RV camping in Alaska.

We just got back from an 8-day RV trip in the southern part of Alaska. This was our first time to do this, and this book was immensely handy.The main thing we liked was the listing of the various RV parks in the area. The descriptions were spot-on, and the GPS coordinates that were listed for them came in particularly handy, as were the phone numbers for them so we could call ahead to make sure a space was available prior to driving there. I liked the use of the little icons for each place, so you could see at a glance what each one had to offer (like showers, laundry, free (or not free) WiFi, etc.This book ended up the one with the feathered pages by the end of our trip...we used it the most!Highly recommended!

Used this book exclusively during a summer trip to Alaska. Discovered during the trip that a lot of other travelers were using the same book and found it to be really useful in selecting amp/RV sites.

Really bummed about this book. It's more of a 'look at what I can do' show and tell than an instruction manual on spinning yarn with an intent to weave. It's got great cataloging of all her weaving projects using her hand spun, gorgeous pictures of finished objects, but if you're genuinely looking to learn the nitty gritty of hand spinning techniques complete with detailed pictures of the process of preparing your yarn for spinning to master spinning yarn with the intent of weaving, this is not the book for you. That said, with the disappointment of no pictures of her spinning process out of the way, the pictures of her finished objects are lovely, awe inspiring. It's a well done book. But really, I'm not over feeling misled by the title and lovely picture on the front. I'm a visual learner and thought it should be full of pictures documenting the process of spinning to use in your weaving... Like the title says!!! Wish they choose a better title for the book... Now the search begins anew for a book on spinning techniques with the end goal of weaving...

I don't have a large loom, but I do have a rigid heddle loom that is 30+ inches wide. I want to weave interesting things, but need some pointers if I wanted to get into larger pieces of fabric beyond scarves and such.This book really gives me a lot of food for thought. It is NOT a rigid heddle book, but it does give plenty of information on how to spin yarn with the idea that you are using it in weaving. I love that it gets into every aspect you could possibly want or need to know about creating yarn for weaving. There is plenty of information on washing of fabric if it is woven, dyeing fibers to use in spinning yarn for the woven piece, and pictures which show progression from fiber, to yarn, to woven piece.The photos in this book are fantastic. They are inspirational and instructional too. I am a visual learner, so having photographs works beautifully for me. It helps me see what takes a lot of words to explain, but I tend to understand best with photos/pictures/diagrams.As for patterns to actually weave, there are some. They are a good springboard for you to understand how to get from fiber to woven piece, but if you are new to weaving, it might not help you in the aspect of being instructional for the actual weaving process.WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK-photos are excellent-durable cover-inspirational-takes mystery out of spinning for weaving-gives ideas for patterns for woven things that are flattering and interesting but not too hard to makeWHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK-I wish it had a bit more information about rigid heddle vs the other looms-would have been nice to have more weaving information in as well as how to make yarn for weavingTHE BOTTOM LINEI know that this book is not supposed to be the "One Stop Shopping" book for weavers. It is only to instruct you how to spin yarn that you want to use for weaving. It does that REALLY well. The photos are fabulous. The layout is easy to follow and reference to instead of reading in a linear fashion. It is compact enough to keep it near my loom or spinning wheel, but substantial enough to use it for reference quite often. FIVE STARS for this one. I tend to not be motivated with many of the weaving books I have come across. This one really does motivate me.

Just so you know...I'm a 30+ year spinnner who is very confident in my yarnmaking. I weave as well but have more experience knitting with my handspun than weaving with it. I hate to follow recipes in spinning and weaving books and love inspiration and the story of how things are made. Sara Lamb's book is just what I ordered and lots more.The pictures in the book are very clear as to what I'm looking at. The photos will add to my weaving knowledge because I can use the photo to see what I'm aiming for in my weave. The fiber and yarn are shown with the fabric they have produced. I'm still learning how to read the yarn and predict what fabric it will produce when woven and this book will help me.I am excited to see the various objects produced and happy to see that they are not all multi-shaft loomed pieces. It's important for people to realize that weaving takes place on many types of looms and it's important to show the fabric from different looms. This book does this.Chapters Two and Three make up half the book and this is where I am inspired to run to my wheel and start spinning. The two pieces in the book that show diagrams are timeless and the instructions are easily understood. There is a proviso-if you are a person who buys kits and needs to follow a pattern every step of the way or if you want to make the exact same thing you see this book is not for you. If you can weave a long rectangle and do a bit of sewing you'll be happy with the pieces.It's the stories of how the pieces were conceived and the thought process that excites me about the book. I'll refer often to Spin to Weave when I want to start something new.

I watched the DVD before the book came out (and I highly endorse it as well!). The book arrived on Monday - I have already read it cover to cover and have re-read a few chapters. I have been spinning and weaving for many years, but I have never used my handspun in my weaving as warp - always too afraid about breaking my precious handspun. And NEVER considered using singles either. No longer - this book has given me the courage to spin for my warp. I just finished washing and combing some Wensleydale that I plan to spin as singles and use as warp (yes, I am cheating a bit by using a long wool...baby steps!). I also love how she combines her painted warp with solids to create those beautiful patterns that are so typical for her. There are some patterns in the book to make some clothing and accesories. One thing the book has the DVD doesn't (and they could have so easily included it as a pdf) are instructions for making a PVC swift and niddy-noddy. Great project for setting wet yarn. For those who spin and weave this would make a great addition to your library!

Awesome book very informative. It addresses how to spin the fibers specifically for weaving which was very helpful even when buying commercial yarn for the weaving projects.

I had previously checked this title out at the library and lived it.
