Its observations, though hardly original, seem especially worthwhile at a time when tweets pass for conversation and Facebook postings are a way to stay in touch with friends. Proust and his disciple Alain de Botton advise us to slow down; to take time not only to smell the coffee but savor a croissant or two along with it each morning as you languorously pore over your daily newspaper. Rather than looking for Mr. Right, become him--and start by listening to others rather than nattering endlessly about yourself. Note the beauty in the every day, and acknowledge the irony that one is never more alive or aware of life as when one's own health is threatened by illness.These are but a few of the bon mots found in Proust Can Change Your Life--a delightful literary "self-help" that really is helpful. If not ground-shakingly original, they are life-shakingly worthwhile. I have read several titles by this particular author and have NEVER been disappointed. I studied for a PhD in literature and psychology in my youth. This sort of analysis of Proust is a gem for modern life -- and a guide to appreciating Proust's world as well. Many of Proust's eccentric habits were doubtless "self-inflicted" but the reader will confront how complicated the requirements of his society were at the time. My first exposure was "On the Art of Travel." This is NOT a "Rick Steves" sort of volume with suggestions of places to visit and how to spend less money doing it. It is a first class analysis of what makes us WANT to travel and of what rewards our psyches achieve from it.Whether you beg, borrow or buy, this author will be a consistently valuable addition to your lifetime reading list.

Good enough to have read it 6 times and still not get all of it. I was taken by surprise at Proust's significance in history and myth -- beyond being a Monty Python joke. What is the name of the phenomenon wherein a person sees himself in an old painting? I will never look at a madelaine the same again. Thank you, Alain.

Its a great little book that gives one some perspective on the overall ideas of Proust. I found myself applying to life. I loved the idea of seeing other people you know inside faces and people in art / movies etc. Sometimes when you go to a gallery that has hundreds of portraits or saints etc. it can get a bit dry. Although it really does feel nice to see an old relatives likeness in something and then sit down ponder the idea and feel fresh when walking into the next room.

I would consider Alain De Botton one of the great modern philosophers of our time. The word philosopher might make you cringe, and I get it, but go listen to his interview on the Tim Ferris podcast. It will help in understanding his perspective on how a philosopher should function in the modern day. I took the nod, and I’m happy I did.De Botton writes with clarity, concision, and wit. He turns the subject matter, Marcel Proust, and his book In Search of Lost Time, into a thoroughly enjoyable unconventional self-help manual. I say unconventional, but I can only hope the questions you ask yourself after reading this book become conventional in all sorts of ways.I try to imagine selling someone this book. For me, De Botton had me at the chapter titles. Just to name a few: How To Love Life Today, How To Take Your Time, How To Suffer Successfully, How To Be A Good Freind. Compelling questions to think about, and you’ll be surprised to find how Marcel Proust and his masterpiece In Search Of Lost Time provide a point of view on each.Paradoxically the book concludes with a chapter titled How To Put a Book Down. Simple advice but the message speaks to a much large theme that we all could benefit from. That Beneath every piece of art there is an author with a point of view on the world and the greatest homage we can pay to each is to see our world, for a short time, through their eyes. After that short time, it’s ok to admit that for all the beautiful qualities we might see in each genius work it might eventually prove to be silly, maniacal, false, or just wrong. And as you learn to embrace th​is indifference you’ll really start to see how Proust can change your life.

Bear with me here as I wish to make an unusual comparison of Ann Patchett to Ernest Hemingway. At least in terms of crisp, clear, terse and powerful prose. Whereas, Hemingway was tough, Patchett tends to be tender. Her ability to develop characters is amazing and she seems to hit the right level of pacing. The story has interesting "average" folks - yeah, there really are quite a few of them out there - as well as some esoteric ones and the story itself is interesting. Not usually my type of novel so pleasantly surprised that this one held my interest.

This was a beautifully crafted surreal story about a woman, Sabine, after the death of her husband. Her grief was painfully realistic (I am also a widow) with so many unusual twists and turns that I couldn't put the book down: A gay husband whom she never had an intimate relationship with; her husband's lover who has predeceased him but cared so much for Sabine that he bought a cemetery plot for her so that she could be buried with them; a completely dysfunctional family from Nebraska that Sabine knew nothing about and, of course, Sabine's vivid dreams that felt like messages "from the other side." Having lived in Los Angeles, I even loved the references to beloved places like Cantor's Deli. All of these disparate elements were beautifully woven together to make a story that has endeared me to this author. This is the first of Ann Patchett's books that I have read but will now buy the rest of her works.This is a wonderful book by a very talented author that I am happy to recommend.

This is a very good book. However, I really can't recommend the Kindle version as it is absolutely chockful of copyediting and spelling errors. As an example, early in the print book Sabina drives past 20-foot-tall faces on billboards; in the Kindle edition, it's "20-foot-tall feces." Do yourself a favor and buy the print version. These errors are very annoying and distracting after a while, and given that the Kindle edition isn't exactly cheap, I believe they're unacceptable.

Great story that I couldn't put down. Patchett is a master at creating tension. The characters seemed real, as did the scenario. As I am from Los Angeles and now reside in Nebraska, this hit a note for me. The arrogance of Californians was made evident, as was the ordinariness of those who live in middle America. It may not have been so accurate with the constant snow, as we are drier than most believe. But the characters could have lived anywhere. Nebraska was used as a metaphor for the "middle of nowhere." I would have liked the book to wrap up a bit better, but keep thinking about the book and can create my own ending.

Ann Patchett is simply incapable of writing anything less than a five star novel. This is one of her earlier books but it is superb. Her characters are so alive that you can picture them: their faces, their body shapes, their walks. A very original story is served up in this delicious book. Sabine It is very bright and probably could be successful in any field that she chose but one day she sees a magic act and winds up working for the magician whom she becomes totally in love with. The story starts with the death of the magician and leaves Sabine a widow. It's only later that we find out that she's recently married although she worked for the magician for 20 years. And we also find out that the magician, Parsifal, is gay and for the last few years had a lover named Phan and the three of them lived together in a big house. When Parsifal finds out that he is dying he marries Sabine, who- remember - loves Parsifal more than anyone on earth. Phan was very wealthy and all that wealth comes down to Sabine but she is inconsolable. I couldn't help think of Lytton Strachey and how much Carrington was in love with him and how she committed suicide after Strachey died. Carrington even married a man that Strachey was amored with so that Strachey could be physically with him. Sabine's grief is so all-encompassing that she spends most of her time in bed and would possibly stay there forever if not for the call from the magician's lawyer with some very strange news. Parsifal, who was orphaned as a young child and had absolutely no family suddenly has a family in Nebraska who are very much alive. In contrast to the trio's New York sophistication, the Nebraska relatives are exactly as you would picture them: down to earth, unsophisticated and straight shooters. Much against her parents wishes and warnings, Sabine travels to Nebraska to see her new rellies. Sabine wants to be enclosed in anything that Parsifal might have touched as a child; she wants to rub herself in it the way a dog would rub against some foul scent. One sister looks just like Parsifal and as a magnetic draw to Sabine. One might think she would be turned off by these people but she is drawn to them and cannot seem to extract herself. She stays there for weeks. It's fascinating to see what goes on in that life then where East meets Midwest. Both can learn from each other and it's wonderful to experience.I find it so remarkable that every novel that Patchett writes is so totally different from all the others, very much to her credit.

Maybe I am biased when it comes to Ann Patchett but I just loved loved loved this book. Wonderful story about Sabine who is wife, partner and friend for more than 20 years to Parsifal, a magician. After Parsifal dies Sabine finds out that he has a Mother, two sisters and two nephews living in Nebraska that she never knew anything about. The book is about love and relationships, family, magic, secrets and friendship. So beautifully written, just loved it highly recommend.

Not Ann Pachett's best work (unquestionably Bel Canto) but enjoyable all the same.The characters range from stock to surprising and one of the things I liked best about this book were the interactions between characters from drastically different worlds, something I have seen in all of the Ann Pachett books I have read. This book explores a "sidekick" type character who is her own strong individual person and yet somehow also a supporting character in many aspects of her own life.

Carse takes you by the hand for a walk by a lake. He talks in a soft voice. He points to the center of the lake. Then he sets off an atomic bomb below the lake. He does this over and over again. Carse is one of history's true originals

If I'm going to read a novel based on the life of Jesus, I'd rather it at the very least avail itself of a recognizable personality. It seemed more like a very unflattering parody of the Jesus story than an attempt to answer the many challenges and questions which Jesus's mainstream accounts pose. I was hoping for something that I could share and discuss among open-minded lovers of wisdom. That may be what this is, but its obtuse approach to the subject does not seem to invite discussion, but to simply leave the reader feeling misled. Again, that's just my perception. I want to find out what others thought and felt about it.

At every point where James Carse allows the canonical gospels to touch his narrative, he has given not a twist, but stood the story on its head, to show by subtle indirection that the opposite of what we have been force-fed through tradition is closer to the truth of the events in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. "If the genius of ruling has not left us, we will not oppose your words. There is a far better way to remove their danger, though their danger is great. We will make them our own. When Rome speaks on behalf of the poor, Rome will be seen as the enemy of great evils. We cannot do away with these loathsome birds so we declare them royal swallows. We will do the same with your words, or with some of your words...." (page 143) Carse has intimate experience of these words, and has followed their precept re some of the sayings and tales surrounding the wandering sage of Nazareth; he has appropriated them for today's intellectual. Clever--a very clever book.

It is maddening when so-called wise "men" turn questions constantly back to the questioner, especially when the questioner is sincere. This book, which purports to be a "gospel" shows a Jesus who never answers a question or replies with a story that says little. If one of the major relgions of the world were based on the kind of Jesus represented in this book, people of this faith would be inept. Surely, there are some interesting dialogues in this gospel. The conversation between Pilate and Jesus has an interesting bent. But overall one would wonder why anyone would follow this man. His words are uninspiring and he seems not really to care about anyone. Maybe I missed the point.

The author makes many speculative and outlandish predictions of the future. His sheer number of intuitive predictions will allow him to be right on many matters, but very off on some.What is lacking are analysis and technical details of why the future will be the way the author claims. For example, he claims lack of energy supply and technological progress will bring forth an age of hydrogen powered cars and fusion nuclear reactors. Yet, he provides no technical reasons why these two technologies will dominate the energy industry. Just how will we manage to produce hydrogen in large concentration and quantities which will be cost effective when it takes MORE energy to produce concenttrated hydrogen today than the energy value of the hydrogen themselves? Also, since when was controlled nuclear fusion reactors even possible? An explaination of how we will overcome the technical hurdles is missing throughout this book.Some of the claims are downright outlandish. For example, the author claims we will have teleporter which will transfer objects throughout the globe. Again, the missing piece is of any scientific backing or explaination.Some of the predictions are based on facts, and therefore, have strong predictive value. For example, the author claims that we will have a skilled worker shortage well into 2025 and beyond. This is based on a solid demographic data which indicates that we will have a shrinking workforce of suitable age in America.Finally, the author is a PhD, but he never says on what subject. He also seems to compare himself to Da Vinci.....He claims many of his previous predictions were right on target. But I imagine many of his predictions were dead off target as well. The sheer number of predictions in this book will allow the author to claim that he is a futurist because many of his predictions will probably come true. Just don't expect him to backup his claims with solid science, facts, or analysis.

The book contains a lot of preening; the author seems to think it is important to remind us (anecdotally) how many huge companies and heads-of-state he's interacted with. Many of his predictions range from poorly explored (he talks about a hydrogen fuel economy without addressing the fact that hydrogen is just a transport--not a readily available source of energy) to the absurd (predictions that teleportation will be available within decades, given the fact of photonic teleportation which doesn't even slightly approach the complexity of disintegrating, transporting and reintegrating an object!) There's also a lot of political advocacy here; I'd have simply preferred an analysis of technological and cultural trends along with research to back it up.

I usually enjoy fiction but this was an interesting read.

I heard about this book during a presentation by Howard Rheingold at a Rotary Honolulu luncheon. I jotted the name of the book down and bought a copy.This book has given me a broadened perspective on where our world is today in regards to business, technology, medicine, security, terrorism, population, immigration, the environment, energy, and even what it may mean to be human during the remainder of this century and beyond.The book is divided into 12 chapters. The first chapter sets the premise: The future can be extreme. The future can be bright, or it can be dark. The concept of "Future-Readiness" is introduced, and how the degree of awareness and readyness can change the probable outcome of the future. Dr. Canton also describes a process of looking at the future to determine the extremes, the causes of the extremes, and thus the choices that can be made today to shape the future.The next eight chapters address various factors which we are living with today which will have a bearing on how the future develops. These topics include: Energy, Prosperity/Poverty, Human Capital, Medicine, Environment, Globalization, Security, and Advanced Science.The last three chapters serve to pull together the information in the first nine chapters to "plug in the crystal ball" and examine how the confluence of factors will impact the future of the individual, and the global future with an emphasis on China and the U.S.Granted, there are some pretty wild and imaginative "predictions" of specific inventions, such as teleportation of matter, but the public thought Leonardo DaVinci crazed when he suggested that people could fly with the aid of machines.For me, the chapter with the most impact was the last chapter: The Future of America and Democracy. This chapter is a "call to service" for America, and the world. It very powerfully urges that we the people, government and business, consider taking certain actions to address the challenges that face our communities, our nation, our world, and humanity.This was both a thoroughly enlightening and entertaining read. Two years after publication, this book is prescient and timely reading for anyone who wonders "Where are we going?", "How are we going to get there?", "What could go wrong?", but most importantly "What can we do?".
