Sacred Stories 1 The Birth of the Buddha In the glorious kingdom of Kapilavastu, where the walls were encrusted with jewels and the gardens bloomed all year, there lived a wise and honest king named Suddhodana. His wife, Queen Maya, was as beautiful as a perfect lotus blossom, and she was as kind and good as her husband. One spring night, while Queen Maya lay sleeping on her perfumed couch high in the palace, she had a dream. She dreamed that a young white elephant with six tusks came to her from the sky, and with it were thousands of gods, all of them singing sweet songs of praise. When Queen Maya awoke, she felt a great joy that she couldn’t explain. She rose from her bed, dressed in her brightest colors, and walked through the palace gardens to a shady grove of trees. There she sat on a bench and sent for the king to come to her. When the king entered the grove, he took his wife’s hand and asked, “Maya, why did you send for me?” The queen answered, “I have had a strange dream, and I don’t know what it means. I dreamed that a young white elephant with six tusks came to me, and thousands of gods sang my praises. Does this mean good or evil for us? Please call for a dream interpreter and ask him to tell us.” The king sent for the dream interpreter, who listened to the story with rapt attention. He said, “King Suddhodana and Queen Maya, this dream means that you have been supremely favored by the gods. You will have a son who will be rich in wisdom and praised by the world. Oh King, oh Queen, your son will be an enlightened one, a Buddha.” Suddhodana and Maya looked at each other with radiant eyes and felt a deep happiness and peace. The king called his servants. “This is a day to celebrate,” he said. “Take money from the palace treasury and give it to the poor. Give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty. See that every woman has flowers and perfume. Everywhere, sing songs of gratitude for the honor that has come to us.” Months went by, and one day Queen Maya knew it was time for her child to be born. She went to the king and said, “Today I will wander through the gardens. I want to hear the birds singing, smell the fragrance of the flowers, and feel the soft air.” “But you should rest, my queen. Won’t it tire you to walk those winding garden paths?” “No, the innocent baby to come must be born among the flowers,” Queen Maya answered. The king nodded. He turned to his servants and said, “Go to the gardens and deck the branches with hangings of silver and gold. When you carry the queen in her chair, wear necklaces of pearls and precious stones, and bring your flutes and harps so you can play melodies that will please the gods.” Bells rang as the palace gates opened. Peacocks spread their tail feathers and swans flew overhead while the queen passed by, seated on a chair carried by servants dressed in finery. In the gardens, Queen Maya told the servants to set the chair on the ground. With her maidens she strolled among the flowers, stopping to sniff a perfect rose or watch a butterfly. When she reached a certain tree that was covered with blossoms, she stopped. With a graceful hand she pulled a branch toward her and held it. She stood quite still, feeling energy and power course through her body, and in that moment a perfect child was born. The maidens near her lifted her son in their arms and sang songs of praise. While the queen rested, they washed him in fresh water from the lotus pond and wrapped him in fine cloths. The earth trembled, alive with delight. Buds burst into blossom, fruit ripened, and the sky sang. One of the servants hurried to tell the king. “My lord, your son is born!” The king and his family went to the garden, where the baby lay in a soft bed of flowers. Birds sang in the trees, and harps and flutes played sweet music. “His name is Siddhartha,” said the king, and he and all the people bowed before the new prince. One man raised his arms and said, “Prince Siddhartha will bring happiness to the world. We have been in darkness, but now we have light. This blessed child is the one who sees truth, and we will learn wisdom from him.” The baby, glowing with a golden light, smiled at all who had come to honor him.Did You Know? • Kapilavastu was in present-day Nepal, near the northern border of India. Today it’s a village called Piprahwa, where visitors come to see the ruins of the ancient palaces. • In Buddhism(BOO-dism), elephants are revered as symbols of endurance and strength of mind. She’s collected “sacred wisdom” from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Native American, and Sacred Earth traditions (which includes Wiccan) and reveals it through delightful stories of pilgrimages, odysseys, family struggles, battles against evil, and, inevitably, lessons learned. Used with parental or teacher guidance, the 35 stories are equally appropriate for children. Sacred Stories offers a truly entertaining way to learn about the world's religions, and illustrates the differences and similarities among them. A highly enjoyable read!

This is a really cool, age appropriate, and educational book. Excellent resource for teachers, students, or parents who wish to teach or learn about the subject.

It's a little bit of a snooze fest. I still read the whole thing but it was a long read if ya catch my drift.

Very simple to understand and easy to read, seemingly geared especially towards beginners and in a way that is well understood. I'm very pleased with this buy. Not a huge book, but the 170 pages are filled with good information. I got it b/c I'm wanting to teach my young children that there is more to the world we live in than just what is taught for the most part in small town, USA where we live. I want them to be open minded and to accept what others believe to be their truth. This book I think will come in very handy when the time comes to teach them about different religions, for they a little too young at the moment, but I went ahead and purchased it now b/c I too was wanting to learn a little bit more. It doesn't get too into detail to the point of losing the reader in over-description, but describes just enough to get a basic understanding of each belief system. I like the religions the author chose to include in this book; Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Native American, and Sacred Earth. Although the world doesn't end with just these religions, it is good basic overview and the major beliefs.

This book is a wonderful way to introduce children to different belief systems. With tales from all the major religions of the world, while managing to keep them at a child's level and to treat each religion with respect. These are not just randomly selected stories, but were chosen to reflect important aspects of each religions teachings. These tales also help to demonstrate the commonality in each culture. With tales from Buddhism to Sacred Earth, Marilyn has done a wonderful job both in the introductions to explain the most important tenets of each religion and in the selection of the stories reflect these teachings. As a folklorist I would be willing to use this book as part of my curriculum for the children's classes and would as a painless introduction for adults.

This book is a staple in our home and has been since I was a little girl. I remember sitting on my mom's and nana's laps with them reading this book to me and I'm thrilled to be able to pass on these experiences to my kids as well. The stories are thrilling and captivating and the illustrations are beautiful. This book means a lot to my family and our family time.

I'll skip any summary of this book or of the series; dozens of reviewers have done that quite well. I assume that you are familiar with these books, probably have read this volume, (likely more than once), but now wish to have the book available as an audio CD. Perhaps a long car trip is in the offing? Good for you.I am happy to report that, at least for me, this audio version gets high marks across the board.First, I can hear it and understand it. No mushy sound recording. No odd imbalance in volume that requires you to keep turning the volume up and then down. All of the spoken words are crisp and clear.Second, there are no sound effects or such folderol.Third, there is a single reader. This is not a play for voices and is not read by a number of different character actors.Fourth, Alex Jennings is a marvelously effective reader. His approach is dynamic but not overly dramatic. He is never coy or arch, and does not ham up any of the big scenes. In the first chapters he can be a bit tentative in distinguishing among the major characters and is inclined to give short shrift to minor characters, but after that he settles into the various roles and adds a distinct and recognizable identity to each character.Finally, the reading is very respectful. By that I mean the book is not read as though it were just some silly children's book. It is treated as the triumphant work that it is and this adds greatly to its weight and impact.Please note that there are 7 discs. Runtime is a bit under nine hours.

†††When I read The Dark Is Rising in 4th grade (it's a 9th grade book) IT WAS THE MOST EXCITING THING I HAD EVER EXPERIENCED. It's so full of beautiful expressions of the battle between good and evil. I think it made me aware of the battle, the two clear sides, even as an adult and like the hero in the story - gave me an unquenchable desire to overcome the darkness in the heart of mankind and in my own heart. Such is the powerful effect books have on children, if not adults. Is there a special child in your life? This and the C.S. Lewis series, The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe, will be important references in his or her spirit. So buy it :-)

Series is awesome, and should be read by anyone interested in the folklore of the British Isles region. The stories themselves earn 6 stars.But this particular version is very disappointing and not worth more than one star. I thought this was a set of books, when in reality it is one single book, containing all of the stories back-to-back. I guess it's more lightweight and portable this way, but the books almost becomes unmanageable in its large size, especially for kids. Pages are rather grey as well, not bright, and appear to be from recycled paper product.I'm all for recycling, but save it for newsprint or packaging... not for works of literature that are intended to be read before bedtime!

Choose a side- the dark or the light.I had forgotten the excitement and fu of Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising series! These stories transcend time, fitting into the world of today just as well as they did when first written. Before reading the modern stories of wizards and such, I recommend introducing your children to the world of the Drew children, their Great Uncle Merry and the Old Ones.

This has been, and always will be, one of my favorite novels. I read this for the first time when I was seven and I was immediately pulled into the world and characters. The Dark is Rising is actually even better than this novel, but this one is a great setup to the sequel. It has a 'Goonies' type feel to it as these children move to this new house that all sorts of secrets hidden within its walls. They find a treasure map and begin to hunt for what is marked in the map. It has some great clue hunting scenes and run-ins with 'darkness' that keeps the suspense going throughout the entire novel. I feel like this series should be read by every young kid because it instilled a sense of wonder in me. If you are a fan of the Book of Three, you'll like this series.

Excellent nearly forgotten series of books. If you saw the movie made about the second book, forget the movie. It was awful compared to the book. The characters are wonderful, the story line is gripping and Susan Cooper has created an amazing world of wonder! Predating Harry Potter by decades, this is the book series that everyone needs to read!

While l am a fan of this and all of Anton Lavey's books, this one would probably be my least favourite. He goes off on a few rabbit trails and rambles a bit, sometimes to the point that you're not totally sure what he means. Still, there is plenty of knowledge and insight to be taken from Satan Speaks. lt was written when LaVey was an old man close to death, which means you get his final, most complete view of the given topics near the end of his life experience. Cynicism and sarcasm abound, as well as his trademark dark humour.

I've only just cracked it open and by the second essay I was feeling elated! This promises to be some of LaVeys best work. Upon reading "To: All Doomsayers...etc." I found myself getting more and more emotionally charged with each sentence. Nodding vigorously in agreement and say "yes! Yes!" With each statement. By the end I was practically jumping up and down and shouting "YES! HAIL SATAN!" I can't wait to get through the rest of this. So far, it's much better than the Devil's Notebook.

When I read this book, for some reason it makes me think about Anton packing his bags and saying "I'm done here." Especially the first few essays, when he talks about the apocalypse and how it's exactly how Christian America made it to be. I'm not sure exactly what this thought means, being as I don't believe in an afterlife. Perhaps his death was a departure from reality and then his vitality was transformed into our fond memories of him.Mr. La Vey was a very opinionated man and this work reflects that. It's as casual as a book can ever be and is funny too. I especially like the essay on how he dislikes music played in stereo rather than with a single speaker. Here he presents his opinions often with tongue in cheek humor. Some of his essays are utterly hilarious. Yet, he is often quite serious.LaVey hated pompousness, arrogance, and self righteousness and all throughout his writings he rips into these with a visciousness and rage that could only come from the devil. Having a high opinion of oneself is one thing, but that form of counterproductive, haughty self righteousness was what he hated most, what he called "The Goodguy Badge."His essay on stereo was interesting, "Stereo, Scam of the Century." When you read this essay, you might find yourself saying, "Hey, he's got a point." They introduced stereo not to improve the quality of music, but just to sell more record players and playing systems. And how many people really know the difference between a stereo recording and a mono recording of a piece of music anyway? Most of the time they are standing or sitting too far away from the speakers and not between them to even notice the difference.I myself prefer stereo since I usually do actually sit between the speakers. But I am quite different from most people. And sometimes I have actually noticed that some music really does sound better in mono than in stereo because the sound actually does tend to blend together.Reading and laughing at his essays, I often think, "He's got a point. I've seen that myself."Agree with his opinions or disagree, you will have fun reading this book, and learn a few things from an old carny.

It's pretty obvious that Anton LaVey is a genius. If you read his essays he basically solves all of the problems that no one could ever figure out and he explains things in a way that even slightly intelligent people can understand. One essay in particular explains how some of the most ridiculously behaved people's behavior can be explained by something like itchy skin, and he does it by examining a Tasmanian Devil. You seriously wish you were as awesome as he was way before you were conceived. If you read this book you deserve a thumbs up.

This book is profoundly disappointing. I was expecting some kind of interesting or challenging ideas from the essays in this book but LaVey sounds like someone's lonely, doddering grandpa who wants the kids these days to know about his opinions on mundane topics. I'm sure this book comes highly recommended from all of his friends at the senior center but it just isn't worth the money.

I am not a Satanist. LaVeyen satanism requires putting ones self above all else, which I cannot do. That being said, LaVey writes well and makes many good points. He was a rebel dedicated to the non-popular, against fleeting fads, and exercises the importance of the individual. He writes with humor, sarcasm and represents the views of the disenfranchised.

Some times he makes sense, sometimes he doesn't...sometimes he's really showing his age and times he comes from, sometimes he's forward thinking. He isn't necessarily "Satanic" in my opinion (but neither am I), but I always enjoy reading what went on in this man's mind.

Little Golden Books are great. This one is a classic, and the artwork is awesome! The gingerbread man and all the characters have so much personality! This is a must read...my 6 year old loved it. Yes (spoiler alert) the gingerbread man does die at the end, but it isn't upsetting at all:)

I have fond memories as a very small child of my grandmother reading this book to me, so when I saw it on sale I quickly grabbed it to read to my four-year-old. When I am not reading it to him, I catch him flipping through the pages and saying gingerbread man's part. A total win.

I bought this book for my son 25 years ago, and he enjoyed listening as much did I enjoyed reading it. A great must for your child's Little Golden Book collection.

My son kept reciting this book from hearing it at daycare. I had the book as a child and had to find him a copy - I absolutely love Little Golden books and the way they are laid out so this was a no-brainer for my purchase. He is SO happy to have this book in his library :)

My grandchildren always enjoyed this book, especially when the reading was followed by them eating a gingerbread cookie.

Nice to have in our preschool library collection. Richard Scary illustrations. I deviates slightly from some of the other older versions, but runs fairly true to the one I remember from more than forty years ago! Some people seem to be alarmed at the fact that the cookie is eaten in the end. Get REAL people....HE IS A COOKIE....and even the youngest kids in school understand this! Gingerbread cookies are for eating!

I love to send these books instead of random cards to the little ones I love. This book all the kids loved and months later are still thanking me for.

I remember this story from my childhood and I loved it then and love it now as an adult. Its a larger golden book but not overly so. The pictures are fantastic and colorful, the story is great. I guess I am reliving my childhood in my old age as I just love these books from my childhood. I have recommended this book to others and will keep on recommending.
