An acquaintance in Devon recommended this book so I ordered it and started reading right away (not my usual habit). Something just compelled me. I finished it last night and declare it's the best memoir I've ever read. Raynor Winn writes about the injustice, loss, homelessness, and illness she and her husband, Moth, were hit with--all at once. How they decided to trek 630 miles along the southwest coast of England because it was either do something brave or give up. They knew Moth might die along the way. Happily, they did not give up. Love story, adventure tale, survival saga. Nature and society up close and personal.
When Raynor and Moth Winn receive life altering blows - losing their home and livlihood and a terminal diagnosis for Moth, they embark to walk the south west coastal path (it makes a sort of desperate sense) – a 630-mile trail stretching over headlands rising above the Atlantic, dropping to sandy coves, and repeating - again and again and again. They walk through blistering heat and rain, “shards, thundering against waterproofs,†heavy pounding rain, a drumroll without conclusion,†rain – furious and horizontal,†“sheets of grey falling from cloud to sea, a visible cycle of water.†Campgrounds being out of financial reach, they sleep “rough,†surviving on noodles and rice, and the occasional kindness of strangers. The book is a meditation on homelessness (they learn to not reveal that fact to people), and fine writing about their experiences and about the natural world – dolphins, sea birds, and seals, cliffs, hedgerows, and weather - in this most beautiful area (Poldark country). I loved this hard-to-put-down memoir of courageous survival and growth.
I love this book. Written intelligently and with a big heart. Very few books come close to this one. Thanks for writing such an inspirational story.
Raynor wanted to walk. Moth came along. Forced out of their home, two weeks of preparations done, the walk was started. The South-West- Path of Britain was the goal.A tent, two rucksacks, two Tesco sleeping bags, two air-filled mattrasses, some clothes and cooking utensils, a purse, a credit card, two books, a sneaked-in radio, a hat plus two Mars Bars, and some noodles and rice provide much of the basics for this trip. This trip, that was done with only little money to use and lots of money – and an oncoming death- to mourn. Actually the trips is made up of two with a break in between. For the second part the sleeping bags were upgraded for the necessary warmth.I bought and read this book even though I did not need any more books this year. I bought this book even though I did not know, if Moth would survive the trip. It needed to be done. Why? I wished to support Raynor and Moth. A long walk like that sounded interesting. There was an idea that the book would be good. But especially I needed to share in the loss of one’s partner and friend. And the book did touch me very deeply at one point. There were lots of sad things. This was unavoidable. Loosing a home, a farm and employment is something we do not wish to face. Neither do we need to face death. Wait for it. It is also sad how we as a society deal with homelessness and the homeless. Many turn away, denie it, but some also take advantage of it. There were also good things. Nature and people described. Even having a good time with strangers. Sharing a pastie. One nice moment involved blackberries and another a tortoise. The book has a good structure. I see it in three parts, though Raynor Winn divides it differently. It is also good that Raynor and Moth Winn wished to work on a solution for their situation.I did not read the book myself. I was read to. Anne Reid read it. Her voice was kind of suitable for it, even though I could not quite hear it as Raynor’s voice. I was always aware that it was not Raynor. Anne Reid’s voice is slightly ruff and neighbourly. It could not have been read by Moth as he is a man. Could it have been written by him, that thought did cross my mind?A Salt Path was a worthy read.STARS: 4/5Reviewer: leeawrites.wordpress.com
