P.J. Benshoff is a Florida native who grew up in Sarasota when the nearest woods were just down the street and the way to Myakka was a dirt road. She worked as a park ranger at Myakka River State Park for fifteen years before assuming the role of park naturalist in 1995.

This book gives a nice over view of the key pieces of the Greater Myakka Ecosystem and descrbes how they fit together. The guide is a fine example of short course in a nationally significant natural area.The local and state governments have over a hundred million in investments in the Myakka ecosystem. Many of these assets can be fully enjoyed by the public with some education. This book makes the personal experience of this ecosystem much more valuable and much more fun.The guide book can be read by a younster with little or no expereince or an adult with much exerience in natural history and the local area. The book can be read straight through, or opened up to anywhere of interest. You can find out what to do for a day or for several day vacation in the Myakka ecosystem.The guide provides an overview of the entire ecosystem as well as nature based activities for children and adults. It also provides overview of the political issues that relate to preserving and maintaining a large ecological area.Most people who see a wildland or nature based park on the map have little experience on how to appreciate it. Some people are very speicalized in hiking, biking, canoeing, or fishing but have little access to understanding beyond their experiences. Their ignorance can be costly interms of lost opportunity and in some cases be dangerous.When most people see a broad expance of nature they have little understanding of it. It is like greek or latin, they hear the words but don't understand what is being said. This book will help you read nature, and develop some important experiences to become more fluent in it. The book also tries to tackle some important problems in miseducation. The book provides a basis for understanding the importance of fire in maintaining the ecosystem, a big issue where fires can burn as frequently as 1-5 years in the same spot, and are essential to maintain ecosystem integrity.The book also tries to address the dangers of interacting with wildlife in ways that can be deadly. It is not a rumor that park rangers are asked to take pictures of families next to a 10+ foot gator. While a few others freak out and try to kill every snake they encounter. I have seen someone stopped in the middle of State Road 72 get out of his truck to kill a snake. And seen a campfire from a group of science students, escape and burn 10 acres.The book provides enough science based natural history to understand the basics of the landscape and habitats and also animals. The book won't replace you Peterson Field guide series, but it does have enough maps to make it possible to get you an idea of where the important opportunities are in the ecosystem. And it does provide enough illustrations to give you a overview of the important plants and animals that you are likely to encounter. While books like Ecosystems of Florida will give a better overview of the science of Florida's major habitat, this will give you enough information to be as fluent as a tourist with a Berlitz guide to a foreign language.While the guide is good for the casual naturalist and ecotourist it is also great for informing the public on wildland issues. In Florida where land and water are manipulated and altered, it is important to understand enough to be able to participate on such public issues. The book touches on why planning and management is necessary not only for the enjoyment of nature and ecological goods and services but also for public safety.The quality and quantity of the wildands often reflect the quality of the public in that community. This book goes a long way in helping to inform the public of the natural and historical beauty of the Greater Myakka Ecosystem. This is a useful guide for finding wondrous hidey holes in Myakka River State Park. It's too large to be a suitable field guide but readers can make the most out of a trip to the Park by reading sections of the book beforehand. It's written by a Park ranger/naturalist whose long employment at the Park yields her many years of observations. Charming drawings portray the dream-like quality of the Park which many visitors have experienced.However, the book falls short of the claim in its Foreward that it "weaves history and science" together. The position of Park ranger/naturalist in Florida has only one special requirement, the possession of a Class D driver's license. The park ranger/naturalist author is not a credible source of history or science.The book is filled with specialized knowledge of botany, wildlife ecology and animal behavior, areas outside the author's expertise, but she does not cite sources of the information. The closest thing to a citation is on p. 56: "I once read a study..." She designates "endangered" status to the Florida scrub jay on p. 178, although it is a federally threatened species instead.The writing is marred by the use of the passive voice, overt ageism ("You can always tell the old coots by the way they line up outside of Morrison's Cafeteria") and the author's own nativistic attitude. Although extraordinary writers have described the Myakka River, this author implies she's the only one qualified to write "the truth" by saying, "I always find it amusing to read descriptions of the Myakka written by authors who visit the river once and try to describe it for all time."Insensitive folklore anecdotes substitute for history. The author offers a word-of-mouth account as proof that a local church sits on a Native American burial ground, because children defiled the site and "the next morning there was an Indian skull on nearly every fence post in Miakka." The author invites readers to join her cultural bias of Native Americans by playing a scare-yourself game of survival in the Park, imagining "Indians are all around me."Scattered quotations by 1880s author G.O. Shields bolster the author's claim of the Park's natural beauty. Its beauty is better left unsaid than written by Shields, a traveling sportsman who exhorted early Florida hunters to bring plentiful ammunition to kill game or simply shoot anything wild for target practice.The Upper Myakka River in Manatee County has exquisite natural beauty and abundant flora and fauna, some extremely rare. It gives life downstream to Myakka River State Park but the author dismisses this section of the River as simply a "diminutive, blackwater stream" intent on making its way to her turf in Sarasota County. The 2 counties abut each other and share the same River but the author's knowledge seems to lie in her own backyard. She mistakenly calls the adjacent tiny unincorporated community of Myakka City a "city" -- an incorporated municipality.Park visitors seem to irk the author. She's "often perplexed" when they ask for ideas on what to do at the Park because the answer, to her, is self-evident. Visitors unfamiliar with alligators sometimes leave her flabbergasted, when they take photos of alligators or take their dogs to drink from the river: "Unbelievably, I have encountered Park visitors engaged in each of these activities."The book's final chapter challenges readers to support the author's own "noble goal of preserving a piece of paradise for all eternity." Land management is costly, she warns, but the public must be willing to pay for it. The author's thin thread of credibility vanishes when she plugs her own job: "Funding must be found ... for salaries for those hired to care for the land."Still, this is a useful tour book although the 250,000 people who visit Myakka River State Park each year may interpet a turf-guarding "mine-all-mine" attitude by the State employee who wrote it.
