Authors D. L. Turner and Catherine H. Ellis are both descendants of early Latter-day Saints in Arizona. Turner is a fifth-generation Arizonan and Mesa resident; Ellis is a descendent of Mormon Battalion leader Jefferson Hunt. While I am one that can appreciate the preservation of ephemera, especially images of the past, that's all that is really contained in this publication.Very little meat in the text, to provide meaningful history on the images taken, and the real significance to the growth of Mesa or its LDS population.
Latter-Day Saints in Mesa gives a reliable overview of the development of this early central Arizona LDS community. Beginning with its forerunner settlement, Camp Utah, (aka Lehi), this work features a number of never before seen images from private collections. For those who are interested in a thumbnail sketch of the area, this book makes a great jumping off point. I highly recommend it.
