I have been a full time lampworker for about twenty years. This was the book I needed to open my eyes to completely different approaches to working the glass that I would have never thought of. I've found myself excited about going out into the shop and cutting and gluing the glass etc. and not just the regular blowing and sculpting I have always done. I'm not sure how useful this book would be for a beginner but as a seasoned glass artist it was the inspiration and new directions I was needing. Thank you Lucartha Kohler! I can't believe the information that she gave freely. I would have been tempted to keep so much of the information to myself as "secrets". After all, our glass secrets are how we survive as full time working artists. Obviously, she has already made it and it doesn't matter to her. Again, this is a wonderful book for seasoned artists and might be a little deep for the beginner.

This book has it all! Patterns with drafting instructions! I didn't know at first if I would like the book, as I'm a lazy seamstress and I hate tracing and drafting, but this book is a great read and offers endless options with thorough instructions. Every bodice has modification ideas . For the skirts, she has included instruction on how to make it as a standalone skirt. There are a myriad of fit adjustments included, along with your average primer on basic sewing.I appreciate that the patterns aren't watered down. Do be warned, if you don't like tracing, you will HATE this book. The patterns are nested Burdastyle type sheets printed front and back. The larger sizes are faded out rather than different line styles. The different pattern pieces do not overlap, so it won't be too much of a pain to deal with.

This book is amazing -- it definitely lives up to its tagline: the ultimate dressmaking guide. This book goes beyond the pattern pieces and how to mix them. With clear line drawings and easy to understand written instructions, the author shows you how to alter pattern pieces to achieve your desired look. The hardest decision was to figure out which dress I'd make first. For my first dress, I made the strapless bodice and paired it with the half-circle skirt. I've never properly fit a strapless before and it fits beautifully!!! Amazing!! I know I'll be creating custom dresses for myself for years to come.

I just received my book, and at first I was dismayed to see the sizes only went up to 12. I am a size 20 (working on getting smaller), but was looking forward to making some cute clothes to wear whatever size I am. I thought the size limitations should have been addressed in the description portion of the Amazon site so it would be clear. I contacted the author and she was quick to respond and explain that her size 12 fits a bust of 50.5 inches, or size 20 (but I think that means in size 20 in ready-to-wear (RTW) store bought clothes, not pattern sizing). This helps, because it is closer to my measurements (52") and easier to make the adjustents to pattern to size up. I wear size 20 in RTW but that corresponds to a size 32 pattern. (For newbie sewers, take note, you need to shop pattern size by your measurements, not by your normal RTW size, and you probably won't like the number you end up with for a pattern! However, this is at least closer to my size and I should be able to alterate the pattern size to my measurements. This was a great relief. I am looking forward to using this book and its patterns to "design" myself some cute apparel.

I had made probably 3 or 4 dresses before getting this book, so I'd put myself at "confident beginner." Now, I wish I had started with this one! I really, REALLY hate tracing, but it really wasn't so bad with this. I just got a roll of tracing paper from the art and craft store and got to work. So far, I've made three dresses with it, all using the princess bodice and circle skirt. It's easy to modify the patterns, too, with the instructions in the book. I feel like a real seamstress with all the modifications I've been able to add! People at work have even started paying me to sew for them!I started sewing because I like full skirts and vintage-esque dresses, but they're getting more and more difficult to come by. I always felt like going through packaged patterns was daunting, and it would take me a week to make a dress. Now, I can finish one in around 6 or 7 hours. Absolutely love this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to sew their own dresses. It's just SO much simpler with her patterns.

I've been trying to teach myself how to sew after taking a single introductory class to sewing that covered the basics of the machine and hemming. So, I bought this book along with several others and found this to be the least beginner friendly -- at least, not for a novice like me. I've made dog coats, neckties and zippered pouches but that's about it. I intend to try the basic bodice and basic skirt out of this book, but have found myself needing to google terminology that the book does not describe. For example, I know what interfacing is (as I've had to use it in ties), but didn't know there was "facing" fabric as well. The book explains how to use facing fabric, lining fabric and interfacing, but does not explain what they are (obviously lining fabric is self-explanatory but this was the first time I ever heard of facing fabric). In any event, the book is still a tiny bit too advanced for me, but I love all the dress options and the fact that they allow for a very wide range of sizes (from 32-24-34 through to 50.5-42.5-52.5), which accommodates my small frame much better than a lot of other modern dressmaking books.

Love this book! I am not very experienced with sewing clothing, I'd say a confident beginner. I learned SO MUCH from this book. My daughter picked out the Mock Wrap dress with the Blue Skies modifications & it turned out great! I was a little worried when I first started as I have never traced my own patterns or modified anything, but by the end I developed an intuition based on Tanya's methods to adjust the pattern. That is huge for me. I feel like after sewing patterns from this book I am better able to understand clothing patterns overall. I love the styles she presents, leaning toward the classic & vintage style, but you can make it all your own with the basic skirts and bodice patterns she gives you. I also love that you get instructions if you want a stand alone skirt or blouse. I highly recommend this book!

This is a technical book on technique to catch river smallmouth bass on a fly. The authors are from the Midwest, but their techniques would work anywhere. I would venture to say that this book is the most important book ever written on the subject. You must read this book if you fly fish for smallmouth. The author divides techniques into 3 major sections: surface, midwater, and bottom. I love the deep dive into specific situations: for one type of water- which type of line, leader, and fly to use along with exact technique for presenting it. There is lots to be learned about the behavior of smallmouth, which is different from all other fish. I won't be as concerned with matching the hatch anymore and I won't be fishing on the bottom with crayfish as much. I will also be much more patient with letting flies sit- less is more.My only criticism is the repeated references to x-axis and y-axis water and presentations. Even though this is explained in the beginning I was often confused. I have reread the book 3 times now and am still uncertain what he means sometimes. Why can't he say "drift parallel to the bank"?This book is a triumph! The best money and time invested in fishing in a long time.

I have been fly fishing for 50 plus years and chasing river Smallmouth almost exclusively for the past six years. This is one of the top three books I have ever read on fly fishing for river Smallmouth. Written by guides that spend 90-150 days each year guiding clients - guides who make a living putting their clients on fish - this is perhaps the most technical treatise on the nuances of chasing this great gamefish that I have read to date. This book covers in detail the movement and holding positions of Smallies throughout the year as well as how to effectively fish the entire water column in terms of patterns and techniques. Full of knowledge and gorgeous color pictures, this book is a must read for all serious anglers that chase river Smallmouth with a fly rod. I have read this book from cover to cover twice and called one of the guides at the Tight Lines fly shop to discuss their techniques in more detail.

What if five smallmouth fly-fishing junkies got together and wrote a book? If that sounds like book-by-committee, that’s pretty much what we have in Smallmouth: Modern Fly Fishing Methods, Tactics, and Techniques. Thankfully the team behind it manages to avoid the proverbial camel. It’s a credit to chief word-smiths Dave Karczynski and Tim Landwehr that they make this amalgamation of anecdote and guide-tested technique, downloaded mainly from the staff of the Tight Lines fly shop in De Pere, Wisconsin (with a big assist from half-a-dozen other luminaries of the smallmouth fly-fishing world) hold together as well as it does.However. Let me point out a few of the consequences of ginning up a book this way.Let’s start with the fact that the editorial team presumes you do your smallmouth fishing mainly the way they do, from a drift boat. That’s nice work if you can get it, but if you mostly wade for your fish you’re going to feel like you’re on the outside looking in through much of this book. This is not to say a wading fisherman can’t learn a thing here, but if that’s you, know that the book isn’t talking to you. You’ll want to eavesdrop on the conversation for sure, but that whole thing about x- and y-axis rivers that other reviewers have commented on, for example, is meaningless outside the context of drift boat fishing. So if you wade, you can ignore it. You’re welcome.And talking is the word. The book reads like much of it was dictated into an iPhone. It’s full of the structures and idioms of vernacular speech. I counted 9 “simply put”s, 12 “first off”s, and a whopping 21 “that said”s. These and other verbal crutches don’t contribute a thing, and once you start to notice how often the authors deploy them, you wish you hadn’t. As guide talk out on the river, no big deal. But this is a book. There’s a difference.Pop quiz: How many “columns” does the water have? I’d have said one, and you can fish at the top, the bottom, or somewhere in the middle. In this book, “column” sometimes means the continuum from top to bottom, and sometimes it means a slice of the continuum, as if there are three different “columns,” as in expressions like “the middle column.” Conceptual inconsistency like that is going to creep in when there are multiple guys doing the conceptualizing.Something that may surprise many readers is the complete absence of fly patterns, to say nothing of tying instructions. It’s pretty remarkable these days to come across a fly-fishing book that doesn’t so much as hint at fly-tying, “the other part of fly fishing,” as Dave Whitlock so aptly put it. The photo plates feature a lot of professionally tied and shop-sourced flies that you’ll need quite a bit of skill to build for yourself. Or, I suppose, you could order a few from the aforementioned shop up in Wisconsin. Hey, I have nothing against product placement in the story; it’s the way of the world these days.So that said and simply put, this is a solid effort by a bunch of guys who know their stuff and don’t think of smallmouth fishing as something to do when the trout aren’t biting. Good on them. If you share their enthusiasm, you may very well find this book worth your while, not to mention your dime. I bought the Kindle version and I think that unlike some others, it’s one book that doesn’t lose a thing in that format and maybe even gains by it.

There is no consensus: some critics called the novel the spiritual heir to the Pulitzer Prize?winning Adventures of Kavalier & Clay (2000); others thought it a disappointing aberration. As in Kavalier & Clay, Chabon explores issues of identity, assimilation, and mass culture, but he also pays homage to the noir detective novel—with mixed results. I am reading the Nebula Award winning novels in chronological order. This is the winner for 2008.I must say, this book was very...different. Different in an interesting but sometimes difficult to read way. The novel is liberally embellished with Yiddish, the native language of the characters. There is a glossary in the back which I didn't notice until it was too late. I don't like looking things up anyway, plus the context makes most things obvious.The story is complex and the ridiculously long names for some of the characters don't make it any easier to keep track of things. There is a lot to follow. This is not a light read, you have to be paying attention. I would not recommend it for an audiobook.The two main characters are detectives in a province of Alaska to which they have been granted a 50 year lease. The main character, Landsman, life has gone down the tubes, his marriage collapsed leaving him with nothing to live for. He rents a dumpy apartment in a slum where he spends his non-working time drowning himself in alcohol. But he is a driven detective and when a young man is murdered in his apartment building, he takes it seriously. The book follows the complicated path to find the man's killer.What I really liked about the novel was the language, not the insertion of Yiddish, but the colorful and insightful aphorisms. So much can be conveyed in so few words. I'm going to put a number of them in this review so you can see what I mean. There are a lot, lot more throughout the novel.The lady has been in and out of the hospital lately, dying in chapters, with a cliff-hanger at the end of every one.The blood from the back of his head has scattered rhododendrons in the snow.He can feel his rib cage ringing under the mallet of his heart.Landsman feels a numbness enter his limbs, a sense of doom that is indistinguishable from peacefulness.I'm like a cash gift, I'm always appropriate.I could go on citing these things but you've probably got the idea by now.

I have a love-hate relationship with Michael Chabon. I loved The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. I hated Wonder Boys and this would be right in the middle. I would encourage anyone reading this to first have the understanding that this takes place in a fictional world where the Jews are given, for lack of a better description, an alternate Israel in Sitka Alaska. Since I did not, it took awhile for me to "get it"...about the time he mentions the A-Bomb that took out Berlin. So you better have the Glossary in the back of the book open, along with Google so that you can cut through the density of the narrative with it's heavy reliance on Jewish/Yiddish references. Maybe it is my deficiency that I do not want to have to cross-reference every third paragraph; however, I don't. The characters are well drawn and his descriptions of place and time are wonderfully evocative. The story, although overly convoluted for my taste, is well told. Maybe I should stick to Romance Novels?

I don't have time to review this properly, but I'm not the type who wants to read fiction taking place in an alternate history. However, this book was so imaginative and unusual that I ended up buying into Chabon's world in Alaska. Sorry there's no time for me to explain why. Just get through the first 50 pages and enjoy the ride. Chabon is so smart and funny that I couldn't help but consider my relative superficiality and stupidity.

Don't be put off by the unlikely hypothetical premise of a US - sanctioned Jewish shtetl in Sitka, Alaska -- Chabon could take any premise at all, regardless of how crazy, and do anything he wants with it so long as he keeps writing in his characteristic, highly evocative style that exactly places the reader in the moment right down to the components of a particular smell or color or thought or memory, or light or mood. He delivers his easy, almost free wheeling exactitude of description, with unparalleled and seemingly effortless turn of phrase, through multitudinous and constant allusion, delightfully concise and incisive by turns, nailing it, never letting the allusion get in the way, speeding by it, allowing it to spring forth as from a well rehearsed comedian, in consistently dense prose achingly and enviably to the point in stream of consciousness types of controlled leaps from this to that, precisely conveying in disarmingly simple words, a likeness between the object or emotion or taste at hand and things we know intimately, all with with shocking accuracy, constantly drawing a string of minute comparisons and likenesses in a made up world made undeniably palpable and familiar, a made up world especially for Jews, but so enjoyably particular and intimate in its description that in the end, his wild premise seems not so terribly unlikely.As for the plot, it's as wild as the notion of a remote Alaska Jewish shtetl set up by the state, and yet it moves along briskly enough, implausible --or not? -- as the outcome may be.Crazy enjoyable read, although it helps of you are Jewish or nearly Jewish by association owing to near constant cultural and actual Yiddish references (a lot of which, however, are self explanatory by context). All of this creates a feeling akin to an inside joke best understood by Jews, but again, the language is so beguiling to anyone enchanted by a well written turn of phrase, that it would be a shame for only Jared to read this and for non Jews to miss out. I encourage all linguaphiles, whatever their ethnic background, to dive in, maybe with a mini Yiddish reference dictionary on hand.
