Playing the Ponies is a drama that comes to life when a highly skilled physician reluctantly accepts how the vagaries of chance can impact our lives. By avoiding the overly dramatic, Dr. Mushlin respects the integrity and the intelligence of the reader by combining everyday language with the challenging complexity of the life and death puzzles doctors face. If you have ever wondered what your doctor was thinking when all you could think about was if you would live or die, Playing the Ponies is a must read.

This book was written by a truly brilliant and wonderful doctor who was always a very calm and compassionate man. Loved reading about his life and some of his more complex cases.

Realistic view of Doctor / patient interfaces

Interesting, intriguing stories. There was enough medical-ese that it was tough to follow sometimes, but yielded a great appreciation for the art of practicing medicine in today's world.

I bought each of my two physician-to-be granddaughters copies because it will inspire them and teaches how a good doctor cares for his patients. It illustrates the satisfactoin a person feels after solving a complex problem. This is the reward one should always yearn for.

I am sure Dr. Mushlin is a very compassionate and caring doctor, but he's not cut out to be an engaging writer of medical vignettes. His writing style is wooden and has the quality of a first draft at best. There is nothing compelling or interesting. He runs through long lists of symptoms without indicating their signficance and most of them are irrelevant to the reader anyay. He frequently writes using the royal, "We", which comes off as a bit pompous and inauthentic. This type of jargonesque presentation is more appropriate for Grand Rounds or a symposium. The stories are too short. There is no meat on the bones. The stories are generally boring. If you want to learn more about, diagnosis and patient care, there are tons of infinitely better books such as "How Doctors Think" by Jerome Groopman or the work of Atul Gawande.

This is an engaging book. I found it riveting and a quick read as this memoir wove its way through a substantial number of actual cases where Dr. Mushlin seemed as much a sleuth as a physician. The writing style is relaxed and makes for easy (and quick) reading. It is also a testament to the tenacity of people to stay alive and to keep their existences tenable and at least somewhat enjoyable. I would recommend it for anyone, but particularly for someone considering medicine as a profession.

Fascinating insight into the thought process of a medical professional. If you've ever been curious about how doctors assess a situation and make a diagnosis, you will love this book. Dr. Mushlin's writing style is engaging and thoughtful. I enjoyed learning new terminology as I read and feel that the author's explanations of such terms - when appropriate - were very clear.

I work in Uganda about a month each year. I first read Ian Clark's book, "How Deep Is The Pothole?", which I found to be very informative, especially regarding learning the Ugandan culture. This book transcends Ian's "pothole" book, in that it is a fine treatise on a general overview of Uganda, delving deep into some very cool stats. I highly recommend this book to anyone that plans on visiting Uganda.

This the first travel book that I've purchased about Uganda, so I am excited to learn! This is a beautiful book with lots of helpful culture and travel tips. Nice compact book that could easily fit into a pocket on a travel bag, purse, backpack, or carry-on bag. Happy travels!

This is the first book of its kind that I have read, so while I cannot judge its quality in terms of content, I am highly satisfied with it as one who is heading to Uganda for the first time next month. I find the information quite helpful and easy to read. It is worth the purchase.

This is an excellent introduction to Ugandan culture, written by a physician well known to the community, not only for the quality of his medical care and founding hospitals, but for his love of Uganda. I have been to Uganda three times and appreciate the understanding this gave me of the culture, the expressions used, the people and how to be polite with inquiries and conversations.

It was so helpful while in Uganda on medical mission with understanding the people and beliefs. Amazing, and so accurate! Recommend to anyone traveling to Uganda.

There is not much positive to say about this book. It has only 150 "riddles"/ logic puzzles. Quite a few of them are lame (lame, LAME!), and quite a few of the rest are "heard too often"s. The large graphic heading introducing each riddle is ridiculous, distracting, and a total waste of paper...which is why the book's riddle section uses up 60 pages with what could have fit in 20-25 and the rest of those book pages could have been used for MORE (perhaps BETTER) puzzles. The sentence structures for several of the riddles are incorrect, for example using "how do you call" instead of "what might you call...", which throws the answer in the wrong direction. I'd hoped for a book of clever riddles and thought puzzles to share with my grandkids (ages 8 and 12) who are at the stage of loving such things. This book was NOT it. I definitely felt this book was a waste of my money. I wish I would have thought to look at our local libraries' selection of riddle books before I impulsively bought this one! If you don't have terrific libraries around you like I'm lucky enough to, then I recommend looking up riddles and thought puzzles on line instead...I found some really super ones that way, too. I will not make the mistake of buying anything else from Puzzleland. (Had the item description offered a better preview of the book/ "look inside" I could have better evaluated that this book would not be what I was looking for. I'm guessing this was a deliberate move on their part.)

I purchased this as a gift for a 1st grader. Some of the riddles are, I would say, advanced and perhaps a bit difficult for a six year old, but I think by and large it has good riddles that are funny. It is a bit annoying to have to look up each answer in the back. It would be so much more convenient if the answers appeared right below each riddle - they could be printed upside down so the child is more unlikely to "cheat" and look at the answers before trying to solve the riddle. I think this would be perfect for grade 2 and above - for an advanced child in grade one it should work as well.

My 10 and 8 yr olds love brain teasers and riddles. This book is full of riddles and questions that kept them busy for days! They like to get together with their friends to see who can stump who. This book was a hit with all of them! I would definitely recommend!

It was fun to read on a road trip. It encouraged my 7 year old son to read on his own. Loved it.

While I am one that can appreciate the preservation of ephemera, especially images of the past, that's all that is really contained in this publication.Very little meat in the text, to provide meaningful history on the images taken, and the real significance to the growth of Mesa or its LDS population.

Latter-Day Saints in Mesa gives a reliable overview of the development of this early central Arizona LDS community. Beginning with its forerunner settlement, Camp Utah, (aka Lehi), this work features a number of never before seen images from private collections. If that opinion is correct, this would be an excellent reference text.Causal inference theory is important because the regression techniques now taught to young social scientists as methods of determining cause and effect assume endogeneity when the data often don't support such an assumption. They also impose a linear model on the data that can be similarly inappropriate. The non-parametric techniques discussed by Rubin and Imbens, while having their own assumptions, are applicable to a wider range of problems.Rubin and Imbens summarize the voluminous literature on propensity score and related causal inference techniques in a manner that is accessible to someone with a solid background in statistics (both frequentist and Bayesian). I read the book cover to cover and, despite already knowing something about Propensity Score techniques, learned a great deal.They begin with randomized experiments then explain how the mathematical models developed for such methods are also applicable to observational studies. They then discuss various methods of using the Propensity Score along with tests of the plausibility of such models and bias limits when some of the assumptions in these models are relaxed.One complaint I have is that the different types of exact matching are barely discussed. Considering the growing importance of techniques like Coarsened Exact Matching, this seems like a significant oversight. In addition, the book contains no exercises making it difficult to use as a textbook without some supplementary material.All in all, though, this work is a must have for those engaged in Causal Inference either academically or in the business world. Even those not making active use of these techniques might find applications to their empirical work once they understand how to properly use Propensity Score analysis.

This book does not have a very rigorous approach to causation. The applied parts are lacking as well -- they apply the suggested models in “empirical examples” but that's literally it - they just run the models and read the numbers, no insightful interpretation of anything, no justification and so on. If you want to read something informal but applied, go to Mostly Harmless Econometrics by Angrist and Pischke. If you want to read something rigorous, go to Causality by Judea Pearl.

I really love it.

The only shortcoming is that font is small. If the margin is reduced to give more space to the context, that would be perfect!

A great book. It has careful and easy (to follow) arguments that help to understand interestign situations.

Although this might be a good book to study causal inference since there are not many choices for now, it was tediously long in many topics. I wish it were written in a more concise way.

Recommended strongly by Prof. Strauss, really the best!
